OK, this is gonna sound weird, but here's what I did!
First, I trimmed all around the outermost portions of the image. Then, I placed it on the wood block, BUT DID NOT REMOVE THE ADHESIVE BACKING PAPER JUST YET. I traced with a pencil, the outside edges of the leaf images. Then, I removed the image, cut the rest of the way around all the leaves so there was no large expanse of rubber joining them anymore.
Then, I re-aligned them to the penciled areas on the block, to make sure I knew exactly where each leaf cluster would go, and then I removed the backing paper to secure them permanently.
I can stamp now without worrying about accidentally getting stray ink on that large expanse of rubber that connects them all, AND, use it as is, or easily omit with marker or ink pad. As for adding leaves to a stem, if I wanted, I'd simply use my Stampa-ma-jig for that.
Is that clear as mud?
