Default Pricing & Shipping amounts?

I am looking to get rid of some "unloved" stuffess and I'm wondering for those who sell thru the B/S/T forum or ebay or etsy or whatever the venue that you use.. How do you decide the price on an item, now I know I cannot get what I paid for them, tho that is some big time wishful thinking! AND if you have to ship how do you find out the shipping amounts. I need to organize this room !!! I miss being able to just sit down and "play"

Thanks for any and all input

I buy and sell on Ebay. The way I price my things is by doing a search on completed listings. By doing that, I can see what items actually sell for, not just what people are asking.

As someone who has done some buying and selling on this board, I do appreciate the "sisterhood" about the b/s/t area of this message board. The ladies on here that are selling, actually want to see their things go to a good home and I rarely see over inflated prices like I often see on Ebay. I have started to come here first when looking to sell or trade something for that reason alone.

When deciding shipping, at least on Ebay, I take everything into consideration when pricing. I have listed items for $5 with $3 to ship and got no bidders at all. Then relisted the same item for $8 with free shipping and sold it immediately. It all depends on who is looking at your items...there are some people out there who will only look at items with free shipping. On the message board, I think I always pay for shipping. Not much to ask considering the pricing is so much more realistic and I love this message board!!

Mel's approach to pricing is a good one - look to see what similar items have sold for on whichever site you're using to sell. I think another reason that prices on the B/S/T forum here seem very reasonable is that people aren't having to factor in any selling fees etc, potentially just a small PayPal fee and they price accordingly.

I can't help with shipping costs I'm afraid as I'm in the UK and your system is completely different to ours. Does the USPS web site have useful information? Most people are willing to pay shipping at cost if the item they're buying is a good price and often you need to know what they're buying before you can say what the cost is going to be (because they're combining items etc).

Good luck selling some stuff!

one thing you can offer would be to fill flat rate containers for shipping if they buy multiple items. ( figure out how many stamps you can get in a tiny box, a medium box etc. that if things are priced reasonable will help move things too if they know you will "combine" the shipping and you have a couple of things they want.

usps has a shipping calculator. if you put the item in a non flat rate box it will ask you zip code your mailing from zipcode sending to, weight and size of the package, if you want delivery confirmation (always always buy this even if you dont want to pass the cost along to the buyer) and then it will spit out a quote at you.

It is helpful to have a small "kitchen" scale (that will accurately weigh things in ounces) if you are going to be shipping a lot of items.

If someone pays you with Paypal, you can even print your shipping labels / pay for postage that way.

I primarily sell on BST. Generally speaking SU sets have usually gone for 40-50% off the original price so I use that as a guideline -- except hard to find which are more, and common (like when people used to get a lot of extra SAB sets) for less.

Generally, for me, pricing depends on the condition of the stamps and also on the manufacturer and their popularity. Scanning through the listings can give you an idea, but sometimes it varies widely.

I like to post in my listing a request for the buyer's zip code. Then I package the item (typically a padded/bubble mailer) and weigh it on a postal scale, and then visit www.usps.com and calculate the postage. I put in the exact weight... if I don't want to go to the p.o., I divide the postage amount by .44 and stamp it myself, rounding up. I figure that accounts for any slight difference between my postal scale weight and the p.o.'s and I'd rather have it go through with no trouble -- and the few extra pennies sometimes are just worth it rather than going to the p.o.

Once the postage is calculated, I PM the person back with my Paypal i.d. or ask for theirs to send a Paypal invoice. Be sure that they give you the shipping address if they use a different one in their Paypal account.

The p.o. will give you flat rate envelopes/boxes for larger orders -- and you can print out flat rate postage yourself also. For a weight, you just have to put "1 lb." because the weight is irrelevant on flat rate packaging.

Also, just a tip... on BST here, I like to change my individual items to a pale color, like Silver, when they have been purchased... I think it's better than deleting them b/c sometimes people will come back a second time and say "Gosh, I was sure I saw that item here!"

BST here has an added benefit -- I have met some of the nicest people in the world through there ... and have found lasting friendships, too.

Good luck!!!
