I was in Hl Sat. I just noticed the change in printing on the pencils. They don't have the gold lettering my old ones have. They have black writing on.,+ the color name is now in Spanish as well as English on them
I;m glad I went w/ my gut feeilng to put back the handful I got out of bulk stock.HL has a 30% school SALE on art kits. I got a Koh-nor 12 kit for cheaper than the Prism's. I luv the waY THEY LAY COLOR DOWN SO SMOOTHLY W./out a lot of pressure.
I also got a steal on Caron d'ache w/soluable 30 pencil tin for $18.They retail for $75,Dick Bick has them for $69.+ found French rough texture w/color paper for 1/2 price next to them
No more Prism's for me!!:rolleyes:i don't have much money to spend, This was b-day money. Coloring saves my sanity during the heat of the day.:

If you check the Prismacolor threads, you'll see that Sanford, who makes Primsacolor pencils closed their pencil plant in the US and moved manufacturing to Mexico last year.
There is a significant difference and decline in the quality and characteristics to the pencil, now, that make it less desirable to use with gamsol and other techniques. I think grandmabear49 just found a way to distinguish between the newer Mexico stock and the older US stock.
Yikes! What OTHER pencils would be a good quality replacement for the Prismas?? In regards to working with gamsol I mean. I'm assuming that once the US stock runs out, that'll be it??
Lyra pencils are great. But, they have a limited color palette and can be a bit pricey. I've heard that Koh-i-noor are good too, but I've never used them myself to vouch for that...
Koh-I-Noor Pencils are excellent. I like the way they blend even better than Prismacolors. They lay down more smoothly too. An added bonus is that they are much cheaper.

When I researched the Koh-i-noor pencils, I found that they are only available in 36 colours. I have only been able to find a set of 24 at Michaels - so I bought it with a coupon. I just this past weekend bought a small set of Prismacolor pencils on sale. They are nice to work with, but I think I'm a bit late to the game for the Prisma pencils. I've been using Crayola for the last couple years, and for the price and # of colours I can get in a set, they work very nicely. They blend very easily and are easy to find in any store.
What about the Dick Blick pencils? I just pulled one of mine out of the pencil cup, and it's made in the Czech Republic. I use them interchangeably with my Prismas.
On the Prismacolor forum here at SCS, we have been chatting about the problems with the "Made in Mexico" Prismas not working with Gamsol/Odorless Minerals Spirits. See this link here for some info worth reading. Scroll down to post #1614.
Is worth reading thru to the next page on this forum for the inbetween bits about pencils problems and alternatives. Plus Dini has posted some pencil comparisons on her Blog here.
Here is how to tell if your Prismas are Made in Mexico according to this post in the Prisma forum.
Very interesting.. I didn't know that they changed. I got my 120 Prismacolor pencil set a very, very long time ago from Viking for an outlandish cheap price.
Off to read the thread and post mentioned above.
thanks, Pam

Cool Sabrina! Your pencils have a French name too! <grin> Well, it looks like there are lots of options so that sets my mind at ease.
I didn't buy the Prismas that I have. My husband bought them years ago for himself and just never used them. Heh heh...fast forward to when I finally found them and tried them with gamsol.
