Maybe taking a paper towel and trying to soak up some of the gray color?
reinking?
Mine has green embossing powder sprinkled all over it but I just make sure to tap my stamps a few times and move it while I'm doing that and haven't seen any problems yet. Doesn't look pretty but I'd rather buy more new stuff than replace something that is ugly but works
My VersaMark pads looks really dirty ... gray with all sorts of different colored spots on it. I refreshed it with refill and it works fine. Still looks dirty, but works great.
I had one that I used for a class and it looks disgusting with the gray - but I use it for classes now, works fine! So I bought another one for just personal use and am careful, but it is getting yellow spots on it! What's up with the versmark? Anyone else have the yellow spots happening?
The fact that it makes a gray imprint does make it easier to seek when using chalks. I can actually see what I'm chalking! However, when using lighter chalks I'm worried that the gray will show thru the chalks.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I may purchase another Versa Mark and just be really careful.
I've noticed this happens at a friend's house when her stamps are cleaned enough. The stamp gets sorta cleaned, then she goes to use it in the versamark and the stray color still is on the image.
I have had a strange experience with my versamark pad. After using my first versamark pad for a while, it developed these strange blue dots on it Worked okay, but it bothered me, so I replaced it. I opened the new versamark pad and it was nice and "dotless". The next time I went to use it, it had yellowish brown dots! I figured that I just grabbed the old one, so I grabbed the other one. It also had yellowish brown dots!!! Evidently my versamark pads have some sort of contagious versamark dot disease (VDD).

I am now afraid to take them to other people's houses. What if their pads get the same VDD?
LOL! I think I've seen the yellow spots before mine got so gray! The yellow spots didn't transfer to the cardstock so I think it's ok. No sickness here!!!!
I have 2 pads now, the one I originally bought before signing up to become a demo, it's yellow now, and the new one I got with my kit, it's pretty white and I too prescious to use. I have cleaned my old one with a paper towel, blotting everything off of it and then taken a credit card, not to buy a new one but to scrape the gunk off of the pad. Then I re-inked the pad. It's still yellow but not as messy.
LOL! I thought I was the only one with a disgusting Versa mark pad! Mine is almost totally creamy carmel in color, broken up by little black dots and a funny red thing going on in one corner. It also has specks of glitter on it; fortunately, the glitter sticks to the pad and doesn't come off on the stamps. I've thought about replacing the pad but it works fine and I just keep reinking it.
I suspect the yellowing is some kind of weird chemical reaction going on - oxidation something-or-other. Now that I've given you all a chemistry lesson, I'm going to enjoy a much earned cup of coffee and some time browsing the gallery
My versamark had a black girraffe for a long time, but that has finally faded and it too is not white any longer, more an ugly yellow but it works, I know that I used a baby wipe with some stamp cleaner on it to wipe off one of the classic pads when my 6 year old did not clean a stamp and it had a picture on it. That worked pretty well.

One of my versamark pads wished me Happy Holidays in Red for the longest time. It finally faded or got reinked enough to go away.
I have a source for VDD...I read this on another list so I don't know how true or untrue it is, but it makes sense.
We are usually embossing when we use versamark. We usually leave the pad open when sprinkling powder and we all know how neat and tidy we stay with Embossing Powders. Well, some of the embossing powder specks get on the pad, then the dyes from the EP discolor the pad. I'm ok with that answer.
Regarding the graying...I think someone else said this and I agree. I've found this happens when my stampin scrub is needing cleaned. The stamps are getting somewhat clean, but not really, really clean. Then since Versamark lifts whatever is left on the stamp it contaminates the pad.
Have a great weekend!
Chris
It IS from your stamps not being cleaned well enough. I had a horrible time trying to do crayon resist on glossy and the stinky thing kept coming out gray. Yup, my cleaning pad wasn't clean enough from the black ink. Good thing I had a second VersaMk pad. Don't know how to get the "gray" one clean.
I think some of the dots could be stray pastels too. Many tines we are chalking right after we use the Versamark pad. This would also explain the different colors! It still works. A messy Versamark pad is a sign of of a busy stamper!

This happened to me, but now I use my "grey" Versamark for lifting off Basic Black stains. Ink a stained stamp, and let it sit for a while. Then stamp-off on paper--you'll see the black ink leave a considerable imprint. Clean the stamp on your scrub then.
If necessary try repeating the process a few more times to get even more stain off the rubber.
It may not remove it all, but it will remove a considerable amount. . .
Someone else told me about this a long time ago and I was surprised to discover that Versamark can indeed lift black stains from the rubber . . .
When I got my new Versamark, I made sure my stamps were very thoroughly clean before applying them to my Versamark as this transfer issue can pose problems like you described . . . :(
As for "VDD" . . . Oh, man whoever coined that one had me ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

clhouchins - I love that your versamark wished you happy holidays! that was so funny! who knew it had so much to say!?
My versamark also has the yellow VDD. I just figured it was yellow ink that balled up on the pad?
I have heard that people use glycerin to clean their stamps (and craft scissors after cutting out stamps to mount) and the versamark has glycerin - so I just have used my grey VDD versamark to clean my stamps like JulieHRR mentioned.
