Default Help....Sealing pastels

If I use pastels or pearl ex in scrapbooks, do they need to be sealed? I know that SU says not to use hairspray so what do we use? Do they sell a spray?
p.s. I posted this before and never got an answer but I'm still wondering....

Hi!! I think you can get a sealer at the scrapbooking stores but I was also told that if you put another piecr of paper over top and rub with your hand over the layers, it will also set the chalk. It would be cheap and worth at try.

There is a special spray. Just ask at your local craft store. I have read that you can use Krylon Fixative, but I'm not positive that it is safe for scrapbooking.

To seal my pastels I use hairspray and never had any problem with it. I use the aerosol can of non-scented kind. It has never changed the color or anything.

Red face sealing pastels

I have used pastels for as longgg time. You can risk using hair spray - BUT, some brands will blur your work and you run the risk of an unusable piece of work. Krylon has Workable Fixatif, Matte or glossy affixatives or Patricia Hauser (Wal-Mart) has clear acrylic sealer in a matte or glossy finish. They may cost a little more but go a long way and no fear of your project being ruined. Any place that carries stamping / scrap book supplies will generaslly carry an affixative that is archival for long term protection of your work, such as the two I mentioned. Believe me, it is worth the few more pennies you will spend.

Over time hairspray can yellow or turn sticky. Since scrapbooks are meant to last a very long time I wouldn't think it was worth the risk. This is one area where spending a small amount more is worth it.

I agree 110%, lol! I know a lot of folks use hairspray, more power to them. If I were doing a quickie card for someone that more than likely will get tossed, I wouldn't mind hairspray. But, if I've put some effort into something, whether its a scrapbook or not, I think it's worth the money to get a good, archival, and/or workable fixative. A can will last a very long time...
