I like to use lighthouses, they work well for masculine cards. And since my husband is a biker and has quite a lot of biker friends, I also use a motorcyle die quite a lot.

I have used the same generic candles or birthday cake images on masculine cards as feminine cards. Just change the colors of ink, papers and designer paper I use.
Overall most of the stamp images I have don't tend to necessarily scream "masculine". But I made a few purchases recently of sets that are more for the guys.

I have a fondness for gears and "industrial" design so a few embossing folders and die cuts I have can make a great masculine looking card with a simple Happy Birthday on it.
I tend to stay "generic" for guy cards, as my husband is pretty much the only guy I make a card for and he's not into hunting or sailing or any of those typical "guy" things. He's a biker, too, like Sabrina's husband, but he's funny about stuff - won't wear clothing with logos or anything ("I'm not advertising"), and he's in construction, but likes to leave work at work...you see my dilemma, right? Anyway - one of my favorites to date is from The Living Room Floor by Purple Onion Designs. I couldn't get a direct link for the stamp, but it's the Noteblock on the third row HERE. I've attached the card I made in the thumbnails below...

I think sometimes too it helps if you know their favorite colors.
some of my guys are into camera gear, or cooking or snarky humor.
so. I have a pretty wide range of stamps.
a few play poker.
my dad is a big into gardening (and loves flower cards petunia's are his favorite)
(my hubs secretly wishes to be a retired hobby farmer)
My guys prefer cards they can interact with. Shakers are popular, gel cards, anything with fun flock to touch. They don't follow trends so it doesn't matter that some of these are old-school. Of course my guys also like bling on their cards - they get mad if the girls get elaborate cards and theirs are boring and unembellished. Do I have them well trained or what?
Images that I use for my husband include tools, computers, rock music, and BBQ stamps. The only sport he watches is football, so I have used the team colors and designed cards around that as well.
It really depends on the guy...how old he is, what his interests and hobbies are, how close a relationship. That being said, when in doubt I typically use nature stamps for "generic" guy cards.
Wow! This is so hard to answer without knowing more about the "guy"--age, personal interests, etc. That being said, here are a few specific stamp sets that I think would work very well for this purpose.
Waltzingmouse Stamps is one of my favorite stamp companies. They have a lot of great masculine choices, which are not all listed under the "masculine" category on their website.
I really like this versatile set called "Ocean Bound." It has some unique stamps such as "Happy Birthday Old Salt" and "Here's to another year on deck." There are a lot of nice images, some frames and plenty of sentiments -- a nice, versatile set:
My Kind of Guy is not specifically a birthday set, but it gives you plenty of opportunities to compliment the guy in your life with phrases like "Debonaire," "Handsome" and, of course, "Kind." Add in a few mustaches, bowler hats, borders and frames, and you have the start of a beautiful card front. You can always sneak the happy birthday inside.
You could go with a simple "Happy Birthday" stamp in a bold weight, a sanserif font or other masculine-friendly typeface. I think the Birthday Surprise set from Stampin Up fits the bill well. The "Surprise" sentiment is a script, but it's a bold, masculine-friendly one, and the "Happy Birthday!" sentiment is a nice, bold sanserif. Both sentiments and the images included in the set are distressed and rough, adding to the masculine-friendliness of the set:

My husband likes the Simpsons ... so I bought a pack of the Simpsons trading cards ... they usually have a witty quip on them from an episode ... and I put that on a card front and embellished it. He liked it. Sometimes I have to think outside the box.
