I'm thinking of SU and CTMH where the lid folds in, versus Distress Inks where the pad rises up from the case or Amuse which looks to have the traditional style of cap on a pad.
Do you think there are advantages/disadvantages of one style over another? I know that I've been frustration when the caps don't stay on and the pad ends up drying out prematurely.

Yes, I love the SU pads since they have the flip top lid. One, it keeps the ink towards the top since it's stored upside down (without having to remember store it upside down:-)
Two, I like the flip top lid because I often have more than one ink out at a time and I don't have to worry about having the lids out on my desk or matching them back up when it's time to clean up. I also like that I don't get ink where I don't want it...I constantly put my staz on lid on something and get black ink on whatever it is...
Three, I love how I can squeeze the lid to the pad and make a little pallet of ink to watercolor with! Just my likes/dislikes:-) Whoever figured out that pad design was a genius:-)
Yep, what Minders said. I love my CTMH inks. The style of them anyway. I have other inks that I use a lot and wish the lids stayed attached like the CTMH ones.

I guess I will raise my hand and be in the minority. I really wish all my pads had removeable covers. All my pads that have those funky covers seem to have a low spot in the middle and it drives me crazy. I have all of the colors and love the colors but would me much happier if the pads were flat.
I like both the SU lids and the removable ones. The only kind I don't like are with the hinged lid (ex: Versafine). I often put my ink pad to the stamp (vs. the other way around), and the hinged lids can get in the way.

Not in the minority! I perfer pads with removaable covers. If I could go back in time I would have bought all my SU stamp pads as spots. For me they are easier to cover large stamps & take up less space.
Myself, I prefer the removable covers as well. I am not the most physically coordinated person in the world, and I tend to pinch myself a lot when I use the SU! pads.

I had trouble with my SU Real Red pad at first...somehow it got "unhooked" and by the time I got it back together and shut it looked like I had butchered a pig...I was red all over!
On the other hand, if the lid is attached its less likely to get lost in the chaos of creation on my work surface!

Totally agree with this. Just about every one of my SU pads have low spots that make getting an even coverage very difficult. Those from the past few years are the worst for that. I love my Tim Holtz distress inks - the fact that they're not sunk in, don't take up a lot of room, and are terrific to work with. Anymore I grab my distress inks and those with removable lids before I grab for anything else.

I am dying laughing! That same thing happened to me. Why is it always the red one?

or get ink on my hands trying to close them, not that I don't have ink on them already

I like the idea of the SU ink pads but hate using them for the simple fact that I manage to pop off the lids on a regular basis. Hard as heck to get back together again and I have actually hurt myself doing it! Even though I have no CTMH inks I do prefer their lid style way better.
Funny, those who say they prefer the spots because the lids aren't attached. I have slit mine open carefully on one side only so that I can keep the lid attached. Love it. Something for everyone, for sure.

Me too! Those hinged lids drive me crazy! I love SU's especially because the lid stays on it and I don't have to worry about losing it on my desk, but it isn't a factor that stops me from buying other types. The only ones I would shy away from are the ones with hinges.

I guess I'm an ol' fogy but I still like Stampin' Ups old style pads. 1) I have some that are over twelve years old and I am first re inking some of them now. No, I do not stamp all the time but still...2) The new style is nice to work with ONCE I GET IT OPEN! 3) When I finally get it open, my fingers are inked up and I tend to get it on the project in the wrong place from my fingers. 4) Then I have to get is closed again. 5) The new style seems to dry out immediately and I have had to re ink all of them shortly after opening. Sometimes, they seem dry and I just took the seal off. 6) I do have a bit of a problem with the inks that covers come off of as I am always looking for the correct cover. All in all, I still love my Stampin' Up inks!
I like SU's pads because they're a decent size and the lids won't get lost. I was a klutz trying to open and close them at first but quickly figured them out. I've had a lid come off twice in 2 years.
I had maybe ten of the SU regular size pads & gave them all away. I absolutely hate them. They pinch my fingers and I can't seem to hold onto them when I'm stamping. They fall all over my stamping space. Love the colors, but now use the spots. And I don't like the CTMH pads either even though I adore the ink. My favorites are the Brilliance pads, Distress pads, new Adirondack pads, Memento pads & Marvy pads. I was listening to one of Tim Holtz's videos yesterday and he states that keeping the pads upside down is an old myth. The way he explained it made perfect sense to me so I went into my playroom and plopped all of them right side up. Someone on one of the other boards said she'd never kept them upside down and after 12 years they were still fine. Oh, and my regular size SU pads all bowed in the middle too. But, as we all know everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Makes the world go round.

I love the CTMH inks, I am not a fan of the SU inks I just can't seem to operate them! I get frustrated...I know it's operator error but I'm glad I've only bought a few SU colors. (Although they have beautiful colors!!)

How do they differ? I thought they were the same design...it's been many years since I saw a CTMH pad at my friends house though (and I"m willing to bet money that she has NEVER cracked hers open...how sad, I know!!!!!).
And what kind of dog is your avatar? I have a toy fox terrier that looks very much like your pic! :-)
I really like Palette pads, the lids can be turned over and attached to back of the ink pad, much like the cap of a pen, giving you a bit more to hold on to and keep your pad and lid together. That's why they have the indentions along the sides, finger holds.
I too like removable tops. Also, since I usually stamp with the ink pad in my hand, I like sides that are easy to hold like distress or marvy. Adirondack might have pretty colors, but their ink pads are too hard to hold.

!!!!!!!! I never knew that!!!!!! Thanks for this info!!!
I like the completely removeable lids. The flip-top lids are inconvenient for me.

CTMH ink pads swivel. From what I remember of SU ink pads, they slide.
I like the old-style SU pads for the reasons already listed...easier to open, they stay juicy longer, and they don't dip down in the middle...But of course one has to keep with up with current trends as SU does not sell the clamshell pads any more, and so all the current colors, and in-color inks I have are not available in the stlye I prefer...
Thanks for all the funny comments...I enjoyed a good laugh this morning...
