I have always left my heat gun hanging from a cup hook plugged up and ready to go... NOT any more!
I came in from working in the yard to the sound of my heat gun on. The cat *must* have knocked it over some how which turned it on! We now have a singed spot on our floor to remind me of how dangerous that was! I cant even imagine how bad it would have been had this happened last weekend while we were gone for the weekend!!
So ladies take the extra few seconds and UNplug and re plug those heat guns! It could save your home and possibly your life.
I second that. A couple of weeks ago, I must have bumped mine while vacuuming and never heard it turn on. About 15 minutes later I heard it from another room and at that point my table was so hot I got a visible burn when I touched the table. A few more minutes would have been disaster as I was leaving the house for a few hours. I shudder to think of it. Now I have it plugged into a power strip and I turn the whole strip off when not stamping.
Thank you for sharing your experience!! It makes me feel less paranoid as I never leave my heat gun plugged in except for when I'm using it; I'll even get up in the night if I've forgotten to unplug it. I'm the same way with the toaster and other small appliances, too.
Someone else had posted that theirs fell and turned itself on, and burned a hole in the carpet. (I think it was the thread about "What's your Best Tip?")
I was wondering if these ultra hot guns are the SU ones (which I understand are quick because they get very hot) or the Marvy Uchida ones or a variety of heat guns. Just curious if all heat guns do this, or not. (I don't feel like trying it out on my carpet or table.)
I've always unplugged mine because I have 4 young children that are always snooping in my craft area and I'm afraid of what they'd do if they found the heat gun. Thankfully, they're afraid of the blowdryer so they haven't even come near when I'm using the heat gun!

Wow, great advice. I leave mine plugged in to the power strip all the time but now, *me thinks* I'll unplug it! Thank you for the warning! You can never be too safe!

Wow - Thank you for the tip! I have unplugged my heat gun.
Of course, the next time I go to use it I'll think it's not working until I remember to plug it back in!

Wow -- I'm not alone?! One day about a month ago, while vacuuming, I picked up the dog's bed next to a small table that held my plugged-in heat tool, and there was this horrid hole in the carpet AND PAD. I checked out the bed and it was there too. I hadn't even notice my heat tool falling or anything, and I must have used it and put it back on the shelf. So the weird thing is that no one turned it off or I would have heard about it. I was wondering if it automatically shut off or something. I very easily could have burned the house down. We were fortunate to have the carpet repaired for $150 two weeks ago when we replaced half the house in laminate, but I am very careful to store it unplugged now! - Gay Howe
Thanks! I have cats and leave mine plugged in all the time....not anymore! Glad a disaster was averted for you!

All small appliances should be unplugged when not in use, this includes coffee makers!!! How many of you leave those plugged in? I bet you wouldn't if you saw the house that burned because of it!
I had left mine plugged in and last Monday my ds turned mine on and singed two parts of my carpet. I don't know what he was thinking, as he is old enough to know better (10) but that is beyond the point. Mine is now in my drawer when not using it.
For this reason, I always unplug mine too. Also, I read an article about pets injuring themselves accidentally on paper shredders, so I ALWAYS unplug that too. I'd hate to come home to a terrible sight when it takes just a second to plug it back in to use it.

yeah, I always unplug mine as well...thanks for the reminder why it is so important to do so! I guess having a fireman in my lineage has made me more cautious of these types of things...I won't leave the dryer on when I leave the house either...nor any other household appliance...glad everything turned out ok for you!

Oh my gosh, who would of thought they could get their paws in there, thanks for the heads up on this one! DH does leave ours plugged on a serger but we have no pets now, I better tell my daughter who has three and just got a shredder. Thanks again!

As I'm emailing my daughter the thought came to mind that paws may not be the problem, it could be floppy ears like her lab and retriver have. Terrible thoughts!
Oh yes, my heat tool is always unplugged and HIGH UP unless I'm right there using it. If I'm leaving the room, I always stash it. DS is such a copycat, and will plug things in and turn them on.
I make sure mine is unplugged when not in use because a demo at my upline's meeting had the sad experience of actually having her house burn down. Evidentally the thing just caught on fire all on it's own while plugged in. Not sure what heat gun did it (SU's or another brand), but it scared the be=jeepers out of me!
Yep, definitely good advise! A friend of mine had hers on her desk or in a desk drawer (I forget which) and something heavy, like a stapler, fell on it and turned it on. Scorched the heck out of her desk, it's a miracle it didn't catch on fire. You just never think of these things until it happens. I agree that they should put some kind of automatic shutoff on it or something.
Thanks for posting, i leave mine plugged in all the time and my cat spends a lot of time in my scrap room when my 4 year old gets to much for her to deal with. I'm going to unplug it now.
