That boggles the mind that people, no, LOVED ONES can be that rude!!! I make Christmas cards every year for a heavy-duty (semi-truck) repair business and they get floods of calls from their customers saying how much they appreciate a hand-made card. And these are truckers!!!
Just a thought from here in the UK, could someone maybe send Dear Abby the web address of this site & thread, and ask her to forward it to the lady who wrote in, as so many people here were appalled by her rude & uncaring relative, and want to show her our support? If she or her niece don't have internet access, she would be able to use a local library, wouldn't she?
I think I'd rather send a card to the woman and her niece who had to endure this, than to the nasty "friend" who sent the check. Let both of them know that there are many people who appreciate hand made cards.
If it were me, I'd return the check to the friend with a lump of coal.
What a shameful response to a thoughtful, loving gift! Some people are so unappreciative.
Years ago my neighbor's kids used to make me cards...they were primitive, messy, oddly shaped...and utterly delightful!!! I still have them, they are cherished treasures...because those kids made them out of love for me. I truly miss receiving them...one of the girls is married and beginning her own family...and sadly the younger one has not made very wise choices with her life and is constantly in and out of trouble. I wish, with all my heart, I was still receiving those gifts of love from her!!

Yikes! I don't like Dear Abby's response at all :( I would cash the check and then use the money to buy one of those stamps of the rear end of some animal...preferably a donkey if one exists...then make her one last card. The sentiment? Thanks for sharing your perspective - now here's mine ;)

When I saw the article in my paper I was floored and everyone on this thread has some great ideas. Luckily, I don't have anyone that doesn't want handmade cards or least none that are so rude to say so (chuckle). Yes, Dear Abby missed the boat on her response.
When I look back at my very first Christmas card it's awful. It was 15 years ago and I used construction paper, it was stamped crooked, and the design was horrible. I bet people wondered why I was being so "cheap." I keep my sample as a reminder of how far I have come.
What is it that Dear Abby says when she gets blasted by her readers? Something like, "30 lashes with a wet noodle". Well, I think she is getting just that. I think she will truly appreciate our stamper's insight.
