I am getting my first big background stamp (I can't believe I don't have any yet), but I can't decide which one I should get so I'm turning to you again. I've been looking through samples but that's just making me want them all. So I'm down to:
by definition
french script
stipple plaid
What do you all think? or is there another you would recommend.
I use Soft Swirls all the time. I also love French Script-- and wish I had kept By Definition but gave it to one of my recruits (I'll be re-ordering it real soon). So I guess I really can't help, I love them all. Oh and did I mention Swirls & Blossoms? Why not order them all?
By far, my French Script is my most used background. It just seems to be able to go with just about anything. I do like a number of the samples I have seen with By Definition and have considered getting that one.
Okay, I have to put my vote in for Stipple Plaid. This to me is a basic since it doesn't have the french words (which might not go with everything).
I have used the stipple plaid for so much... but I will admit, now that I have the plaidmaker, I tend to use that instead of the background stamp - simply because I don't care for the big stamp that well - too much for me to ink up and clean!
My first vote if for Stipple Plaid. I have it and use it all the time. It is quite versatile. I also have French Script and do use it quite a but, but mainly for my flowery cards. Do let us know what you decide.
I love background stamps. Makes it so easy to make a beautiful card. Right now my current favorite is Bitty Blossoms. It goes with:
Any oriental set...it looks somewhat Japanese.
Any retro set
Love without End
Blossoms & Buds
All the new paper - Copper Kiss and Silver Bliss.
Looks awesome stamped with the new copper Encore pad on black cardstock!
My first BG stamp was Soft Swirls and I have sold a lot of them. But Filligree is the most useful one for me, though French Script is a close second. I miss Antique Cracking desparately, though I'm going to be buying the new Safari one soon and hope to have fun playing with it.
Stipple plaid is also great, though you need, really need, to give that one a gentle sanding when you get it to get it to ink up well. I really preferred Checkerboard to Stipple Plaid, but they retired that too.
I also have By Definition and it is very cool with all kinds of different sets. And Just Jeans...you gotta have that one if you have Pocket Fun...stamped with Not Quite Navy on Brocade Blue gives you such a great denim look, which you can follow up with by stamping the pocket with craft white ink.
I really like French Script myself. I agree with Kar that it goes great with almost any floral stamp set. I use it all the time - of course, that could also be because it is the only background stamp that I own! But it's still a great stamp - that's why I bought it!
I find that I use French Script the most, By Definition the second most.

Of those three, my top pick would defiinitely be By Definition - it is extremely versatile, Stipple Plaid is also great, I use it a lot for Baby cards especially. I do have a lot of background stamps - they are a pain to ink and to clean, but they make the cards so much quicker and easier! I use By Definition, Hand-Stitched, and Antique Background the most. Just got Paisley Print, I'm looking forward to having fun with that one too! I'm a sucker for paisley anything...

My favorite is the elegant Antique, you can use this all by itself embossed and just add a word stamp, organdy ribbon and metalic cording and it looks like a million bucks!!
I also love By Definition and Soft Swirls. I think that the French Script is pretty, but I am upset with France, they didn't support the US so I won't support anything French. I didn't buy Paris in Spring either although I love the poodle. Just my small way of showing my support for our brave men and women in the military.
Wow! Thanks everybody--you guys gave me some REALLY good advice, of course JanTInk gave the best advice--"buy them all!!!!"
I'm going to go with Stipple Plaid now and I'll be getting French Script with another order I'm placing soon. I have several sets (like mini mates & bold basics) that stipple plaid goes very well with. But I also have tons of flowers, so that means I need both!!! And then I forgot how much I liked Filigree (thanks again JanTInk) so now I'll have to add that to my list to get as well.
I love hearing (and seeing) what you all do with your background stamps!
I also forgot to add that I am getting Simple Shapes too, not a background stamp but makes awesome backgrounds on the cards that are in the gallery, so thought that would be one that the background would NEVER be the same all the time!
I realy love By Definition. You can use a marker to just highlight a certain definition on the stamp...that way you get a different look.
I've been using the script looking stamp from Botanicals for backgrounds instead of purchasing French Script...gives it the same look. I just finally broke down and bought French Script...got it yesterday!
I also have soft swirls...very pretty too. That was my first background stamp purchase.
Jan Tink - I love the Bitty Blossoms, too! I ordered it July 19th, as soon as OEX opened with all my other "must haves." I didn't see another set that it coordinates with on your list though - Mini Messages! That's why I got it, to coordinate with that. I can't believe I still don't have French Script, but I have Filigree, Stipple Plaid and Soft Swirls. I also still have Pretty Paisley, which I never mounted but got to match the Fresh Fillers last (catalog) year. But French Script is on my wish list.
What you decide on will, of course, depend on the style of stamping that you do. Think about what types of cards you want to create.
Right now I use the Canvas background all the time. It is amazing. Subtle, but stunning. Of the three you have suggested, French Script is the one that I get the most use of. Over the years, SU has designed some gorgeous background stamps -- many of my favourites are retired. I have great expectations for the new background stamps coming out this summer.
Next on my to-buy list is Just Jeans.

I like all of those and hope to have them all sometime soon. Right now the only one I have is the Canvas and I use it all the time. It goes with evrything.
I have Stipple Plaid and love it! It is a very versitile background and can be used easily with a variety of sets - from "country" themes to florals. I also love Soft Swirls.
Good luck!
I got a kick out of this one too Jami! I was surprised to see it up again. I asked that question 9 months ago and now have all three of the stamps I asked about as well as a bunch of others. Well for those of you searching. . . french script is my favorite of those three. Canvas is also one of my favorites. As well as filigree (if you been on the fence about it GET IT, you won't regret it!!!!) I LOVE background stamps!!!
The three you suggested were my first ones too...I use the stipple plaid all the time.....just a nice touch.....enjoy what you get and I'm sure you'll get more as time goes on. It takes a while to build up your supplies.....
It's not stipple plaid I use all the time but the Canvas one....geez! One day I will have all these names down!!! I stillhave to go look up the names of my stamp sets half the time....
I am thrilled to have found this thread for its ideas for background/stamp set combinations. As a non-creative type, it is so helpful to find suggestions for combinations of stamp sets. If there are any other threads along these same lines, I would appreciate anyone posting a link, whether it be stamp set combinations, wheels/sets combinations, whatever! If there are none, I might begin a new thread and see what develops.
