Default Poll: Do you tip the delivery driver?

I'm just curious.. for those of you who have ever ordered a pizza, sandwiches, chinese, etc... Do you tip the delivery driver? If so, how much? Does it depend on whether or not the restaurant charges a delivery fee?

I always tip the delivery driver whether there's a delivery charge or not. I do this because most "____ delivery boys" (fill in blank accordingly) get paid peanuts because the fact that they will be tipped by customers is factored into how much they get paid an hour. At least that's my understanding of it anyway. It would be just like tipping your waitress.

I worked at a pizza restaurant for two years, and our delivery drivers were paid very well. Not like waitresses who get paid something like $2.25 an hour and live on tips. Our delivery drivers were making $8 an hour (not bad for fast food work around here) and also got a reimbursement for mileage (because we didn't have a company car).

That said, I do always tip, but now I'm starting to get cynical about it and second guessing myself because everyone around here is starting to charge delivery fees!

Gas prices is pushing the delivery fees. It's either that or raise prices again. No doubt that will happen too.

I tip, but not a lot, like 10-15% on delivery.

Iusually tip the ones who do not add an additional fee for delivery. I usually tip a couple of bucks. Not the best tipper but not the worst either

I tip but if it was included I would not.

But do you tip when you go pick up takeout? I have a friend that runs the takeout section of a restaurant and she just rings people out and gives them food and she says she makes a ton of $ on tips.

I always tipped when I lives somewhere where they would deliver. I would always tip 10 or 15 %

I always tip. Usually about $3.00 but sometimes more if the weather is bad.

Yesterday we tried to tip the boy who helped us load the truck in the rain at Home Depot but he refused the tip saying that was his job.

I am sorry to say I usually don't tip when I go for pick-up.

We always tip because we use delivery when we're either too lazy to go pick it up or the weather is bad. Our pizza place is only a mile away - pretty sad that we're too lazy to pick it up sometimes! We tip about 10%.

I do tip because I have come to find out that, at least around here, only part of the delivery fee that the famous pizza place charges goes to the driver. He gets a whole 75 cents per delivery. Although our minimum wage is $7.16 here that is still not enough to keep up there vehicles, buy gas ($2.23.9 per gallon here), and other such things. I have some great delivery drivers though so I don't mind.

Depending on the amount of the delivery, I give according to that, but most of the time it's only a few dollars.

I always tip because I know that is where most of their income comes from. They also have to declare so much in this state as tips even if they don't get that much.

I always tip delivery drivers. I had a friend in high school that worked at a pizza place and he said they kept a list of bad/no tip addresses and ... well you can imagine what can be done to your food before you get it. I know - not cool!

I started tipping the carhops because I found out that they're hourly rate is figured based on them receiving tips. I usually only give 1 to 2 dollars, after all they are just carrying the bags out to the car.

I always tip for deliveries. Usually 20%+ just to round things out. I have never been charged a delivery fee, so I have no idea, but I probably would still tip.

When I pick up if there is a jar I will pop a $ into it, but at our pizza p0lace there is no jar since the majority is delivery.

In restaurants or delivery my husband and I tip 20%. He used to work as a waiter, so he tries to tip well. Sometimes we will tip better than that depending on how the delivery was.
When I takeout usually I will occasionally tip but not often.

Always tip. Deliveries/hairdressers/etc. Any service type deal. Hope not to offend, but I hate stingy tippers. Especially at restaurants where you receive excellent service. (bad service obviously another topic) I work w/some people who say I pay enough for a good meal, good service should be expected not rewarded? Whatever?

People in the service industry LOVE to see me coming. Or my name on the sheet as the case may be....I was a waitress. I know the value of good service. The delivery driver provided a service for you...tip him. Then your pizza won't be cold next time. LOL

(Not aimed at anyone-when I worked at Pizza Hut in high school, the delivery driver would go to the tippers' homes first...to the non-tippers last. Something to think about.)

Then again, I am the one won't write a thank you card to the person who was in the room when I opened my gift.

Catie, My mom taught me that if you get to thank the person for a gift in person, you do not have to mail a Thank You.

I don't tip if I pick up. I don't tip at Starbucks either. I use my card, so am not usually messing with cash. But at those prices, I'm supposed to tip too? Whatever.

If I get good normal service at a restaurant, I am a good tipper. 20% unless they are bad. I don't expect perfection, but I expect it hot, I expect my drink to be refilled, the order to be correct - or corrected if there was an error. I don't take off for stuff that isn't the waitresses fault!

My DH prefers to pick up our pizza instead of paying $1 for delivery.

I only tip if they haven't added a delivery fee. I figure if there is a delivery fee then the drivers are paid better. I know it might not be true, but I think it stinks to charge me a delivery fee, especially if 90% of your business is all deliveries. We usually tip the pizza guy about $2-$4. I've had friends who paid their way through college delivering pizzas and they would only admit to the minimum tips that they made. Most of them were making $8-$10 an hour in tips (they purposely worked the pizza places that didn't deliver to the colleges LOL!)

I always tip the delivery person $5. Unless we have some huge order or its pouring rain, then I'll give a couple bucks more.

I always tip delivery drivers. How much depends on the order, $5 is usually right.

I had a friend in college who delivered Domino's for a while. She said it was pretty scary going to creepy houses in the middle of the night. Anyone willing to brave that every night so I can have my pizza deserves my $5!
