Default Do you know where peppercorns come from?

My DH and I had this discussion at dinner and thought maybe someone on SCS could come up with an answer...(I know, it's sad that we talk about SCS at dinner, isn't it?? LOL). Anyway, where do peppercorns come from? They don't grow on trees, do they? We are just really stumped as to where they come from. Are they some type of seed or pod?

Someone please help us, so we can find out the answer to this burning question!!

Peppercorns are the seed berries of the Piper nigrum (piper being Latin for plant, and nigrum meaning black) vine originating on the Malabar coast of India.
