Question Tonsils out, yes or no??

Cooper, my middle son, is 3 years old, and for the past 6 months, he has had a lot of fluid in his ears that is not draining. He failed the 2 hearing tests, etc., so we went to teh specialist, and he definitely has to have tubes and then adenoid surgery (he snores REALLY loudly). The dr. said that since there is no history of tonsil trouble, he does not think that he necessarily has to have his tonsils out at this point because his tonsils are not huge or anything (since this increases the pain and risk of bleeding). But he said that he can't guarantee that he won't have to have them out in the future. He went on to say that if my dh talked about it and wanted him to go ahead and do it while he was in there, he wouldn't need any persuading to do it. Cooper did have a slight tonsil infection, and he put him on meds for that.

My inclination is to hold off on the tonsilectomy, but I was wondering what you guys think. Do you have any stories or advice??

Hi Mel...my son got his tonsils/adnoids removed when he was three years old. He had never had any ear infections (hasn't to this day and he' s but he snored horribly. I took him to the dr because three year olds should NOT snore. He did have enlarged tonsils so they got taken out the day after his third birthday. He had NO bleeding and was talking within an hour of waking up! You can't really tell a three year old to stop talking, even when it hurts!

Once the tonsils/adnoids were removed, that was literally the last time he ever snored. Now, five years later, he seems to sleep much better and be more rested.

Don't know if this helps, but just wanted to share!

My son had tubes at 18 mths and then tonsils out last summer, so 5yrs. It has really helped the snoring and waking up at night, but I also see an improvement in the amount of headaches he gets. I can tell he feels better, even though he never had a lack of energy before.

I will tell you that when they say they really don't feel good a couple days after surgery, THEY ARE NOT KIDDING! My ds is such a happy, easy going child, that I thought "yeah ok, he won't feel good, so he’ll lie on the couch and watch tv and he get over it". NOT! There were a couple days there that I thought we were going to have to check my 5yo into a Kindergarten rehab for the psychotic! He was in so much pain that he was climbing the cabinets to get to his painkillers that I put in the cabnet over the sink. I am not telling you to scare you, just to let you know that this is (according to our doctor, who was the head of ortho-yada-yada-ology, ENT, at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston) very normal. The worst of it lasted two days and then he was pretty grouchy and snappish for four more days. I think it was so dramatic for me because he is normally smiling and laughing and such a sweet lovable, cuddly kid, then all of the sudden he is a glazed over whiney, snapping maniac. All that said, would I do it again, YES! It has made that much of a difference and his allergies do not bother him as much, he hardly ever has a sore throat, the headaches are less, he sleeps better, and he doesn't have the circles under his eye anymore. The only thing that did not improve, that they thought would, was his appetite, he still eats like a bird.

I do not recall how old my BIL was but he was small enough to be wheeled around in a red wagon ....so probably under 4 but my MIL said that he had a horrible time with his ears and snoring etc and they took his tonsils out and he was much much better. She even told me to consider it for my son because of some of his problems...She is a nurse and would not recommend it if she thought it was going to be bad in any way.

It is something that I wish my dh had had done as well....I think some of his sinus problems relate to his tonsils....
