One Guy Didn't

Powerful...

Three guys were tried for crimes against humanity.
Two guys committed crimes.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were given government trials.
Two guys had fair trials.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were whipped and beaten.
Two guys had it coming.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were given crosses to carry.
Two guys earned their crosses.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were mocked and spit at along the way.
Two guys cursed and spit back.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were nailed to crosses.
Two guys deserved it.
One guy didn't.

Three guys talked while they were hung on their crosses.
Two guys argued.
One guy didn't.

Three guys agonized over their abandonment.
Two guys had reason to be abandoned.
One guy didn't.

Three guys knew death was coming.
Two guys resisted.
One guy didn't.

One.
Two.
Three guys died on three crosses.

Three days later.
Two guys remained in their graves.
One guy didn't.

Saw this quote today and thought I'd share it with you.

Joy is the settled assurance
that God is in control
of all the details of my life;
the quiet confidence
that ultimately everything
is going to be all right;
and the determined choice
to praise God in all things.

~ Kay Warren

Thought to share this.....

Exactly!

A preacher and a the president of a soap manufacturing
company went for a walk together.

The president said, "What good is religion? Look at all the
trouble and misery of the world! Still there, even after
years, thousands of years, of teaching about goodness and
truth and love and peace. Still there, after all the sermons
and teachings. If religion is good and true, why should this
be?"

The preacher said nothing.

They continued walking until he noticed a child playing in
the gutter. Then the preacher said, "Look at that child. You
say that soap makes people clean, but see the dirt on that
youngster. Of what good is soap? With all the soap in the
world, over all these years, the child is still filthy. I
wonder how effective soap is, after all!"

The president of the soap company protested, "But preacher,
soap can't do any good unless it is used!"

"Exactly," replied the preacher. "Exactly."

Just a quick post to say hello. Reynold and I have so thoroughly enjoyed our trip. God blessed us with beautiful weather, Beck's Restoring Love event was beyond awesome. Met so many wonderful people during the three-day event, listened to incredible inspiring speakers and it was great to be a small part of the day of service with 35,000 other volunteers.There is so much I could share about Restoring Love however it take pages....

While in Dallas, met an online Facebook friend for the first time and it was like we had know each other for years. Also, got to visit a very dear friend who moved from Maryland to Texas 27 years ago.... even got to share the Lord with someone that came along with my friend. It was God who open the door when this guy asked me why do some people blame the Jews for killing Christ.... well immediately, I went right through that opening. Can only thank the Lord for planting some seeds.

Have had some physical issues but am extremely grateful to God to have been able to make the trip.

So admire missionary, Jim Elliot...

If anyone is interested, TBN is airing the Restoring Love finale tonight and will hopefully air it again. So grateful we were there to see it in person.

Just came across this poem by Rudyard Kipling done in 1919 and it spoke to me about what is happening today.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshiped the gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Hope this will be encouraging.

Comfort In Captivity

Comfort, yes, comfort My people! —Isaiah 40:1

On February 10, 1675, 50 colonial families in Lancaster, Massachusetts, feared possible Native American raids. Joseph Rowlandson, the Puritan minister of the village, was in Boston pleading with the government for protection, while Mary, his wife, stayed behind with their children. At sunrise, the settlers were attacked. After some of the settlers were killed, Mary and other survivors were taken captive.

Mary experienced both kindness and cruelty from her captors. The Native Americans, aware of the religious nature of the settlers, gave her a Bible they had confiscated. Later she would write in her memoirs about God’s “goodness in bringing to my hand so many comfortable and suitable Scriptures in my distress.” God’s Word was her great comfort until she was ransomed by the colonists on May 2.

As the nation of Judah waited to be taken into captivity by a foreign power (Isa. 39:5-7), the despair of its people must have been great. But even in that dreadful anticipation, God’s words brought comfort: “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good!” v.8.

Have you been taken captive by circumstances beyond your control? If so, read and meditate on the Word. And experience God’s comfort. —Dennis Fisher

Upon Thy Word I rest, so strong, so sure;
So full of comfort blest, so sweet, so pure,
Thy Word that changest not, that faileth never!
My King, I rest upon Thy Word forever. —Havergal

God’s Word is the true source of comfort.

This truly touched my heart.

Hard Truths

One day, I woke early in the morning to watch the sunrise.

Ah the beauty of God's creation is beyond description.

As I watched, I praised God for His beautiful work.

As I sat there, I felt the Lord's presence with me.

He asked me, "Do you love me?"

I answered, "Of course, God! You are my Lord and Savior!"

Then He asked, "If you were physically handicapped, would you still love me?"

I was perplexed. I looked down upon my arms, legs and the rest of my body and wondered how many things I wouldn't be able to do, the things that I took for granted. And I answered, "It would be tough Lord, but I would still love You."

Then the Lord said, "If you were blind, would you still love my creation?"

How could I love something without being able to see it? Then I thought of all the blind people in the world and how many of them still loved God and His creation.
So I answered, "Its hard to think of it, but I would still love you."

The Lord then asked me, "If you were deaf, would you still listen to my word?"

How could I listen to anything being deaf? Then I understood. Listening to God's Word is not merely using our ears, but our hearts. I answered, "It would be tough, but I would still listen to Your word."

The Lord then asked, "If you were mute, would you still praise My Name?"

How could I praise without a voice? Then it occurred to me: God wants us to sing from our very heart and soul. It never matters what we sound like. And praising God is not always with a song, but when we are persecuted, we give God praise with our words of thanks. So I answered, "Though I could not physically sing, I would still praise Your Name.

And the Lord asked, "Do you really love Me?"

With courage and a strong conviction, I answered boldly, "Yes Lord! I love You because You are the one and true God!"

I thought I had answered well, but...

God asked, "THEN WHY DO YOU SIN?"

I answered, "Because I am only human. I am not perfect."

"THEN WHY IN TIMES OF PEACE DO YOU STRAY THE FURTHEST? WHY ONLY IN TIMES OF TROUBLE DO YOU PRAY THE EARNEST?"

No answers. Only tears.

The Lord continued: "Why only sing at fellowships and retreats? Why seek Me only in times of worship? Why ask things so selfishly? Why ask things so unfaithfully?"

The tears continued to roll down my cheeks.

"Why are you ashamed of Me? Why are you not spreading the good news? Why in times of persecution, you cry to others when I offer My shoulder to cry on? Why make excuses when I give you opportunities to serve in My Name?"

I tried to answer, but there was no answer to give.

"You are blessed with life. I made you not to throw this gift away. I have blessed you with talents to serve Me, but you continue to turn away. I have revealed My Word to you, but you do not gain in knowledge. I have spoken to you but your ears were closed. I have shown My blessings to you, but your eyes were turned away. I have sent you servants, but you sat idly by as they were pushed away. I have heard your prayers and I have answered them all."

"DO YOU TRULY LOVE ME ?"

I could not answer. How could I? I was embarrassed beyond belief. I had no excuse. What could I say to this? When I my heart had cried out and the tears had flowed, I said, " Please forgive me Lord. I am unworthy to be Your child."

The Lord answered, "That is My Grace, My child."

I asked, "Then why do you continue to forgive me? Why do You love me so?"

The Lord answered, "Because you are My creation. You are my child. I will never abandon you."

"When you cry, I will have compassion and cry with you.
When you shout with joy, I will laugh with you.
When you are down, I will encourage you.
When you fall, I will raise you up.
When you are tired, I will carry you.
I will be with you till the end of days, and I will love you forever."

Never had I cried so hard before. How could I have been so cold? How could I have hurt God as I had done? I asked God, "How much do You love me?"

The Lord stretched out His arms, and I saw His nail-pierced hands. I bowed down at the feet of Christ, my Savior. And for the first time, I truly prayed.

HAPPY LORD'S DAY!

God At Work Through His Spirit
by Josh McDowell and Sean McDowell

What started as a band of 120 followers of Jesus grew to thousands within weeks. The message of Jesus spread beyond Jerusalem like wildfire. Each new believer became a living witness of what God could do in a person’s life. It was happening exactly as Jesus had said it would. “When the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8 ).

Previously frightened and cowardly disciples had become bold preachers of Jesus and his message. They performed signs and wonders. The message they proclaimed resulted in millions of lives being transformed. This was not the result of nothing more than a vague, undefined influence of good, or some mystical force. It was God the Holy Spirit at work. And by the third century over 20 million people had made claim to the transforming power of Christ through the Holy Spirit. All this enormous growth in Christianity is evidence of God sending his promised Comforter. And for over 2000 years every true believer of Jesus has been a testimony to the living proof that the Holy Spirit is a real person who is active in the lives of people.

Transformed lives, answers to prayers, miracles performed in Jesus name are all a result of the workings of the third person of the Trinity – the Holy Spirit. God the Father and God the Son are in heaven. In Peter’s opening message on the Day of Pentecost, he declared that Jesus “sits on the throne of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand” (Acts 2:33). So are supernatural manifestations of God on earth the result of the Father or of the Son? Or, is it the result of God the Holy Spirit?

Because of the incomprehensible mystery of the Trinity, it is simply God at work – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That is why it is not inappropriate or incorrect to say that Jesus changes lives, or for a child to say, “God lives in my heart.” For Jesus himself said he would never leave us, but he clearly sits at God’s right hand. Yet we know he is in our hearts through the power of his Holy Spirit. In fact, Jesus said, “When I am raised to life again, you’ll know that I am in my father, you are in me, and I am in you” (John 14:20). That means the one God in his fullness dwells within us and us within him through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Although we find it impossible to grasp the absolute perfection of God’s triune relationship, that does not diminish or lessen the reality of the Holy Spirit as a person in our lives. As CS Lewis said, it isn’t necessary to understand the process of digestion in order for your food to nourish you. We might say that after Jesus ascended into heaven to sit at the Father’s right hand, God the Holy Spirit became the interactive agent of God to us. Jesus said, “The Father sends the Counselor [Holy Spirit] as my representative” (John 14:26). But he is more than just a being for us to know about intellectually. Someone has suggested that when the Holy Spirit was poured out, the word God was not only a noun – it became a verb. Rather than just learning who God is or following the teaching of Jesus impersonally, the Holy Spirit brings God actually into our lives. He is the active, moving nature of God that impels us to action. God the Holy Spirit is about living, loving, responding, enjoying, embracing, comforting, supporting, accepting, encouraging, respecting, disciplining, growing, empowering, and a myriad of other such verbs.

The Holy Spirit is the dynamic, active, and ever-present version of the Trinity. We experience him in our everyday living. He demonstrates himself even in our capacity to love as God loves. “If we love each other,” John said, “God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us. And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us” (1 John 4:12-13). The Holy Spirit is real. He evidenced himself powerfully on the Day of Pentecost two centuries ago. And his Spirit is additional proof that we live in him, for the “Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God’s children” (Romans 8:16).

Because of these things we can confidently know the truth that God the Holy Spirit exists. Because he is the active and interactive person of the Trinity that dwells within us, he is infinitely relevant to our lives.

With the election drawing near, thought to share this from one of my favorite Christian teachers, James Robison.

Who Has The Answers?
By James Robison

As the November election nears, we’re going to hear from two political parties. Both will point out our nation’s problems and claim they have the solutions. What should we believe? Who should we support?

Listen carefully and prayerfully: Stand for God’s kingdom principles! Don’t be overly impressed by a party’s rhetoric, a slick speech, a pleasant smile, or an attractive personality. For every problem, challenge, mountain, or valley we face, Someone has told us that He can help us walk through it and overcome it. The greatest teacher, Jesus, said, “You can level the mountain and cast it into the sea.” He promised to be with us in every valley – even in death’s dark shadow. Our God made it very clear, “There is not a ditch or a pit that I can’t lift you out of.”

Whether you are registered as a Democrat or a Republican, you will not ride a donkey or an elephant to ultimate victory. God alone can lift our nation out of the valley of despair and empower you to overcome challenges and obstacles. Let’s settle it once and for all: NO PHAROAH, KING, OR EARTHLY RULER IS ADEQUATE FOR THE TASK. We must hear God and follow His direction.

Whatever political banner you may wave, you need the banner of the Lord and the principles of Almighty God or you are going nowhere but down. The way up is God. The way out is Divine Direction. True north is always found pointing to the Father. Set your course according to the one undeniable reliable compass and sail our ship of state in that direction. Insist on a crew that will do it and join with other passengers demanding the necessary course correction.

If you want poverty and unemployment properly addressed and meaningful programs sustained, stop the insanity! We can’t spend money we don’t have. You can’t rob from the yet- to-be-born and steal from our children, their children, and future generations. This is a blatant disregard of the eighth commandment. It is essential for all of us to help shoulder the load and be willing to sacrifice, but we must not expect any one group to provide more money to be misused when we haven’t first diligently cut excess and corrected failed programs. The American people are not responsible for buying every family member considered to be below the “poverty level” (where most people today have at least two bedrooms, air conditioning, and one or two cars) smart phones for their children, X-boxes and Lebron James athletic shoes, or provide food stamps so they can buy junk food, more 2-liter sodas, and potato chips and then talk about how they need more food when so many are obese.

I don’t know anyone more anxious to assist the suffering, the poor, the hurting, and the helpless anymore than Betty and I and our friends who watch LIFE Today and support the outreaches of LIFE. I personally believe nearly every American is anxious to find ways to effectively help the poor, the hopeless, the homeless, and certainly our veterans. Every true American also wants to effectively address the health crisis in a meaningful way, but we’re going to contribute to a psychological, mental, and emotional collapse if we don’t get our head out of the sand and move in the right direction.

Archbishop Charles Chaput explains:

Living within the truth means living every day and every moment from the unshakeable conviction that God lives, and that his love is the motive force of human history and the engine of every authentic human life… Living within the truth also means telling the truth and calling things by their right names. And that means exposing the lies by which some men try to force others to live… We are ambassadors of the living God to a world that is on the verge of forgetting him. The form of the Church, and the form of every Christian life, is the form of the Cross… Let us support each other – whatever the cost – so that when we make our accounting to the Lord, we will be numbered among the faithful and courageous, and not the cowardly or the evasive, or those who compromised until there was nothing left of their convictions; or those who were silent when they should have spoken the right word at the right time.

The preceding are wise words from a representative of the Catholic faith community. I am a representative of faith frequently referred to as protestant evangelical Christian. We both love God, others, those in need here and around the world. We also care deeply about the future of our nation and are both convinced we need the guiding light that only God can provide. The people who profess faith and are part of these two groups could easily provide the inspiration, insight and meaningful influence so desperately needed to reset our nation’s course to true north and a safe, secure future.

The history of our country is but a short chapter in God’s grand, unfolding cosmic drama. Yet it is the chapter in which we live and choose and act. We have been told how the story ends, but not how our chapter ends, perhaps because, mysteriously, it is given to us to help write it. Our hands are feeble, our eyes are dim, and our resolve is weak. Yet we must face the trouble now if our children are to live in peace. So let us pray more fervently than we have ever prayed for a historic outpouring of the Holy Spirit on us, His Church. Not an outpouring that merely moves us to tears, but a cascading waterfall of God’s suffering and abiding love, which will lead us to act with bravery, to walk with integrity, and to stand in unity for the renewal of our culture and the restoration of our nation – one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Good morning, am asking for prayer. Had bowel obstruction surgery last March and was doing well, however, not the past couple of months. The doctor has me back on liquids and adjusting the meds. Thanks

Good morning dear friends, hope you are having a blessed day.

I love Tozer too, Rita, in fact, one of his quotes is standard in my Coles signature when I post on the kid's sites. Speaking of Coles, today marks four hears since Cole went to heaven. Please pray for his dad who will be speaking tonight at a church.

Am doing okay and trusting God to see me through to that 'new body' one day.

Default On Our Knees

The most effective work for God we will ever do is on our knees. While the
prayerless run helter skelter, to and fro, attempting great things, the praying
Christian is hard at work moving kingdoms, shattering strongholds, doing great
things and, in the process, becoming a giant with God.

~ David Wilkerson ~

“Trust in Him at all times; ye people,
pour out your heart before Him:
God is a refuge for us” ( Psalm 62:8 )

So grateful that there are still Christian doctors that have more faith in God than just medicine alone!

You must watch this video and see how God works in an emergency room.

Every Word of God is true....

There Really Was a Jesus

You can trust the Holy Bible from the first page to the last. You can trust what it says about the future, and what it says about the past.

There really was a Noah, who built an ark with a hammer and a nail. There really was a Jonah, who lived after being swallowed by a whale.

There really was a town called Sodom, destroyed by fire and brimstone from above. And God really did feed the Hebrews with manna, sent to him with love.

There really was a Virgin Mary, who conceived Jesus in her womb. And it's true he came to life again, after being buried in a tomb.

It's true Jesus healed the sick, and gave sight to those who couldn't see. It's true he healed the deaf, and walked on the Sea of Galilee.

He healed some who couldn't walk, and raised three persons from the dead. He fed a multitude of people with only two fish and five loaves of bread.

The Bible tells us of Hell...a place for those not forgiven of their sin. And it tells us of Heaven...a place Christ's disciples are sure to enter in.

The Bible speaks of many things... some easy, some hard to understand. But the Bible can be fully trusted, for it came from God's almighty hand.

So, don't pass judgment on the Bible. It's always right, never wrong. For God has give all its contents, and there's not a verse that doesn't belong.

No, don't pass judgment on the Bible. It's God's infallible Word. Just listen to God speak as you read it. You'll be blessed by what is heard.

Thought to share this...

Jesus Christ, Our Hope, Strength and Refuge!

For sins of human beings all,
Lord Jesus laid His life on cross;
Although a sin-free soul Himself,
He suffered, died to redeem man.

He shed His every dropp of blood,
Emancipating human race
From punishment by hell for sins -
Such heinous crimes upon the earth!

The cross is part of Christian's life,
And persecutions will happen,
As Christ predicted all these things,
For those who walked in His foot-steps!

His Holy Spirit guides Christians,
Who live a righteous life for Christ,
The only Son of Almighty -
A heart of immense love for man!

But Christ resurrected from death!
He won clear victory o'er satan;
All Christians good will do the same;
This faith is something strangely true.

Let humiliations come in life!
Let trials, tribulations come!
Let strife threaten our faith and hope!
Christ stays with us till end of time!

A Christian takes his cross and walks
Behind the Savior, Jesus Christ -
The Light and Truth and only Way
To reach Heaven, abode of God!

Something that I need to keep in mind .....

Will You Live Today?

I woke up today,
And I saw my Lord.
He was standing there
And He asked me this question.
"Will you live today
The way I would?
Or will you laugh at me
In front of the world?"

In the car today,
I turned on the radio.
I started dancing to
A pretty cool song.
Then my Lord again,
He asked me His question.

Will you live today
The way Jesus would?
Or will you laugh at Him,
In front of the world.

And at school today,
I found myself,
Lookin' at those girls,
And thinkin' those thoughts
Then my Lord again,
He asked me His question.

And at the movies,
Sitting in line.
I couldn't decide whether
I really should watch it.
Then my Lord again,
He asked me His question.

Then my Lord, He said to me.
That, it's hard to live like He would.
But He said, "it's worth all the pain,
For in heaven, you'll receive your reward."

Ravi Zacharias recently did an interview where he discussed the problem of evil in the world as well as other topics, some relative to Richard Dawkins. It was excellent as always.

Ravi is a fascinating speaker who speaks with such clarity. God has certainly gifted him. Have you every heard his daughter, Naomi? She was on Life Today and wrote a book, "The Scent of Water".

I had never heard of Naomi ... so I watched 3 YouTube videos where she is speaking about the ministry she is involved in. I learned a lot about the amazing work she is doing! Thanks for telling me about her, Caterina!

Good morning!

A Child is Born

For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.
Isaiah 9:6

To those in sin, God sent us the Savior;
To those in darkness, God sent us the Light;
To those in bondage, God sent us the Deliverer;
To those in defeat, God sent us the Victor;
To those in want, God sent us the Shepherd;
To those in hunger, God sent us the Bread;
To those in pain, God sent us the Physician;
To those in doubt, God sent us the Truth;
To those in confusion, God sent us the Way;
To those in turmoil, God sent us the Prince of Peace;
To all in need, God sent His only begotten Son.

Good morning, may you be filled with joy today!

"The Bible talks plentifully about joy, but it nowhere talks about a "happy Christian." Happiness depends on what happens; joy does not. Remember, Jesus Christ had joy, and He prays "that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves."" — Oswald Chambers

Good article

Why don't people come to church?

A Texas pastor asked them

Ask any group in your church: "Why do people not come to worship? What keeps people away from church?" You might hear:

• "We need a better youth program."

• "We have to have a different style of worship service."

• "We need to advertise."

• "If only we had a nursery for young children."

The rallying cries will begin. Usually they center around programs. If the church could just provide better programs, or more programs, people would begin to come back to church. Occasionally you will hear about preferences — about the time or worship style. Then there is the question of staff: those who think that if the right person were pastor, director of Christian education or worship director, people would come flooding through the doors.

These are the answers that church people give when they try to figure out why people don't go to church. Friends, we could not be more wrong.

Image removed by sender. secrets

I recently spent a week using social media to "listen" to people who do not go to church — listening to their explanations for why they stay away. I didn't argue with them. I didn't defend the church. I just listened. And what I heard broke my heart.

The No. 1 thing that keeps people away from the church is the people who are in the church.

Outside of our doors, there is a multitude of people who have been hurt by people in the church. They have been judged for not looking the way we wanted them to look. They have been judged for making mistakes and for choosing to live lives that look different from ours. They have heard the people who worship on Sunday say hateful things on Monday. They have witnessed the followers of the Prince of Peace spreading malicious gossip against their "brothers and sisters."

It's not that people outside the church have low expectations of Christians. It's the opposite. They expect us to actually live out the things we proclaim on Sunday. They expect us to love our neighbor, care for the least of these and love our enemies.

They have high expectations for us, and we have disappointed them. Instead they have been insulted, hurt and broken by us.

Programs are at the bottom of the list for why people don't come to church. One step above that are questions of preference and style. But far and away, the top of the list is dominated by the behavior of people who bear the name of Jesus.

We can change the time of our worship. We can change the style of our worship. We can buy full page ads in the newspaper. We can add programs for youth and families and elders and couples. None of it will matter. Not one bit.

It will not make a bit of difference until we begin to live out the things we proclaim on Sundays. The church won't grow until we learn to treat one another with love and respect at congregational and council meetings.

The church won't grow until we learn to love and value people who look and sound different from us. The church won't grow until we begin to love others the way Jesus has first loved us.

There are people out there who are hungry for God's love but have been too hurt and disappointed by "church people."

And yet there is good news. There is hope.

The No. 1 reason people come back to church is also because of the people in the church. The No. 1 reason people begin worshiping with a new congregation is because they have been made to feel welcomed and loved by someone in that church.

If you and I are the problem, we are also the solution. The way forward seems easy and straightforward to me. It is also uncomfortable and unpleasant. But I will begin.

If you have been hurt by the church, if you have been made to feel unwelcome, if you have been judged, I am sorry. If by my words or by my life I've made you feel like you are unloved, or that you can't trust Christians, I am sorry. From the bottom of my heart, I am sorry.

If you would like to mail sympathy cards or letters of support and solidarity to the school, the school address appears to be:

Sandy Hook Elementary School
12 Dickenson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482 -1218

Sending a card is something small but at least it's something we can do."
