First of all, I am not sure if there is a computer discussion forum - I looked around and am not sure where this belongs.
My laptop has developed several illnesses over the past few months, and we are ready to replace it before it dies completely.
It uses Windows Vista. I have been advised by a friend that I would be happier with Windows 7 - I need a smooth transition and ease of use, as it is hard for this old dog to learn new tricks LOL!!!
Any suggestions? We are looking at HP Pavilion g7 2240, for what that is worth.
The few articles I've read about Windows 8 is that if you don't have a touch screen, don't bother. That it's a big giant pain without one. I'm shopping for a new computer and will probably get one with windows 7. If I have to, I'll go to dell since they have more options with OS.
btw when I switched from XP to windows 7, I cried. But I got used to it eventually.

I'd go with Widows 7 -- for ease of use. Windows 8 is very different and requires a learning curve. Also, when you buy a Widows 7 computer now, you will get (ask for it) a disc to upgrade to Widows 8 for free, for future use if you want to upgrade.
I am a self-described computer nerd - love, love, love them. Windows 7 is wonderful. Also, I'm not sure where you plan to buy your computer from, but it's generally better to order one that you can customize. No point paying for a super fast DVD burner if you will rarely use it.

Thanks to you and others for your input.
My problem is - I really don't know what I actually need! Customizing would be a scary process for me LOL!!!
Thanks for the help. I think we will go for Windows 7.
Now I am wondering how to best transfer documents, scans, etc. to a new machine. (I need a live in grandson!!!)

Do you have an external hard drive? That really saved us recently and made file transfer so much easier. You can run a back up from Windows to the external drive, then plug it into the new machine and run a restore.

Did you use a special program, or did you just drag and drop your files? I have an external HD but I doubt it's big enough to hold all of my stuff. But I can just plug in the old tower, hook up a usb to usb cable, and transfer it. I think.

No, I used the workings already in Windows 7. What OS do you have now? In Windows 7 under Control Panel there is a Section called System and Security. Plug in the external, make sure it's connected, then there's an option in S&S that says "run backup to this drive."
After the back up is done on the old machine, eject the external. When you get the new machine, again hook up the external, and go to the S&S section. There's an option to "restore system" or something like that. It may take a while depending on how many files you have, but it works great.
I have windows 7. But there's no way all my crap will fit on my external anyway. I'm hoping for a new monitor too so maybe I can just plug the old one in and "backup" to the new one.
