Default toddler toenail issues...

first let me start by saying that my son has the world's weirdest toenails. instead of being curved and rounded like a regular toenail, they are flat, and curve up at the outside edges. they seem to snag on everything and tear, so i have to remember to clip them every week because they grow too fast and he'll tear them off on something if i don't. i guess the past couple of days i haven't been paying attention to his toenails, but today when i was getting him dressed i took a look at them, and he's losing a toenail! i went and washed it out and treated it with peroxide, but i don't know what else to do. first, it just freaks me out to think about a toe that will soon have no nail, and second there isn't anything i can do to help it is there? do i have to keep it bandaged? i have no idea how this even happened, but i feel sorry for the little guy. also, i'm not sure if there was blood, or if everything i washed out was just dirt... there's no disease that cause toenails to fall off is there? i know i'm over-reacting a little, but toes really sort of freak me out.

Hi, I don't really have any advice for you, just wanted to let you know that toddler toenails can get really strange sometimes. My little guy's toenails were always broken and cracked throughout the nail, and they also curled out. Toddlers use their feet in so many more different ways than adults that I think they just get banged up a lot.

At age four now, they look fine. If your child doesn't seem to be in pain from it, I wouldn't worry too much, just monitor it. Sorry, I know that's not much help.

I totally understand the weird looking toenail thing. I used to babysit for a toddler and her little toenails looked almost concave! With the edges sticking up and everything..they were just so strange to look at..but now that she is 6 she has perfectly normal toenails. I assumed that her toenails looked like that because a lot of toddlers don't wear shoes and they walk around a lot of the time in bare feet.
But, I definitely wouldn't worry...just make sure the toe is free from any infection and that there isn't any bleeding-and when he does wear his shoes that it doesn't irritate his toe.
I know that adult toenails can fall off because of trauma (like dropping something on your foot) so maybe he bumped it or dropped something and his little toe just couldn't handle it
Hope he's okay and hope you're okay, too!
