Suggestions on a Halloween Costume

My daughter and her bff want to go as 1D. If you do not have teen or tween girls in your family then you might not know that 1D stands for One Direction, a boy band from the UK. They wanted to coordinate their outfits and I suggested that one go as a 1 and the other go as a D. The kids that know them would totally get it! Anyway, we are trying to figure out how to make outfits big enough for them to wear. Cardboard, Foam (like the foam finger material), ????..... Foam would be lightweight and we could probably sew it together. Does anyone else have a suggestion that might work?

You could always use a couple of extra large white t-shirts and use fabric paint for the 1 and the D.
