Sammie
Vent, cry, rant, complain, rejoice, cheer, do whatever you feel is right in the moment.

I hope with all my strength that your pain subsides and you start to feel that you've made the right decisions.

Hugs to you and thank you for keeping us all posted and allowing us to share in your recovery.

Sammie, if anyone has earned the right to do a little venting, it's you! You've handled this with grace and are an inspiration to the rest of us. Don't second guess yourself about the bilateral mastectomy. I think you've made very wise choices. **BIG HUGS**

Thanks so much for the support. Today is bad as it is the 2nd day after chemo. I was given a 3rd medication for nausea and I think it is working. But I feel like crap. I appreciate the kind words. I cancelled an app't this morning to get IV saline even though I am probably a bit dehydrated (too much snow). I will go in on Monday. It's strange but I am too tired to go anywhere. How can anyone drink 3 quarts of water for 3 days? It would all come up.

Oh, I found out that they did forget to turn on the IV saline last time with the chemo to help dilute it in my system. Big OOPS. I didn't have my regular chemo nurse that day either. I guess that is why I was so very sick last time. This time I got 2 IV bags full instead of the normal one and I will make sure I check everytime now. My future chemos are going to be all day events. They have DVD's there so I think my DH and I will be watching movies.

Thanks everyone.

Hi Sammie,

Hang in there. I know it's rough sometimes but you'll get through it.

I didn't have reconstruction. My doctors said they wouldn't discuss it for at least a year since I had to have radiation too. Once I was done with all that, I couldn't bear going back for more surgeries. I guess I still could, there's no time limit, but it just doesn't seem worth it right now. I may change my mind some day.

A good friend of mine also had breast cancer and opted to have the second breast removed 3 years after her mastectomy. She had several lump scares and just decided she didn't want to worry about it anymore. So, she's had a double mastectomy and doesn't even wear prosthesis'! She said it's very freeing.

Everyone is different, you'll make the decision that's right for you but you don't have to do everything at once. Let yourself heal first (in your PJ's!)

Hugs!

I was diagnosed with Hornerís Syndrome about 2 weeks ago. After a lot of testing, there may be a tumor or lesion in the brain stem. The Sympathetic nerve is involved and it travels from the brain stem to the eye in 3 parts:

Part 1: Around the brain stem to upper spine
Part 2: Around the lung to the aorta
Part 3: From the neck to the eye

My problem in is either part 1 or 2 and that makes it serious. Because the expander has metal in it, she was told by several radiologists that they couldnít do an MRI. And my oncologist wonít let me have the surgery to take it out because my white counts are too low making me an easy target for infections. Also the recovery would be about a month. I am getting the dose dense chemo (every 2 weeks) because of the aggressive nature and size of the breast tumor. If we stop it, it would not be good as far as recurrences.

The Neuro ophthalmologist said this could be more serious. Like I need more to worry about.

She called tonight and she talked to the Chief of radiation at the hospital and he said that he would do the MRI on my brain with the expander in. Her nurse will call tomorrow to set up the app't. So now I am more worried than ever about a brain tumor. There does seem to be urgency in her getting me in to get the MRI done. Here I thought breast cancer might be my downfall but the brain tumor part of Horner's Syndrome is extremely serious - per the DR.

It did get to me and I had a tearful break down. I have been doing pretty well emotionally, but tonight I wasnít so good. Tomorrow will be better.

Hopefully I won't be burned or the expander pulled out my chest by the MRI magnets (I saw that on CSI).

Holy cow, Sammie, how scary is that! I'm so sorry you are dealing with this on top of the breast cancer.

I did the dose dense chemo every 2 weeks also. They handled my treatment a bit differently though. I received my Neulasta shot at the end of each treatment (didn't have to go back in). I also stopped chemo in the middle to have my mastectomy surgery and sentinal node biopsy. I can't remember how long of a break I had but it was under a month (they wanted to get back to it asap) All of my chemo treatments were the same (Carboplatin, Taxol and Herceptin)

Hang in there, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sammie, many hugs.

And look how you got that CSI reference and smiley in there - see even when you are feeling down, you've got some up going for you.

And that's good. I too hope that the magnets don't suck out whatever. (Ew!)

Sammie, just reading this and deeply feeling for you and your family. You have been through so much and I KNOW you will pull this ok. BTW, I never saw that CSI episode and I even watch the reruns. Hopefully your MRI won't be quite so dramatic! Too bad all your SCS friends are not nearby. If prayer and good wishes help - you certainly will be doing well soon! Thinking of you. Rose

Sammie, so many others know you so much better and still more say the comforting words that might help your spirit. I don't know you well and I'm not the best expresser but I am so sorry that crap keeps getting dumped on you and your family. Kind people don't deserve this. People who bring good to the world shouldn't have to deal with this. It's not fair but your attitude amazes me. You are fierce, sister!

((((Sammie))))

There's got to be a break coming your way - you more than deserve it.
I've had a lot of MRI's and I find them very peaceful and relaxing.... I know lots of people dread them or can't handle it, but my experience is good. I wish you luck in yours and hope they can give you some quick answers so you know what is going on in your body.

Not knowing is the worst.... thanks for keeping us posted... you don't know many of us, but having the extra people caring about you and sending good thoughts has to help in some way.

Good thoughts flooding your way~~~

Best of luck with your reports. Try and keep the pain meds on time because they help your body to relax and start to heal. Alot of the pain is from the damamge to nerves in the node dissection part of the surgery. I know I had it also. Keep a positive attitude that your news will be good news no matter what. If you are clear that is great if you are not you have caught the culprit and no cancer is going to be in for the fight of its life. You can be stronger than you ever thought possible Live Strong.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, cards and hugs.

My Neuro ophthalmologist made an app't on Monday at 9:15 AM for the MRI on my brain stem and upper spinal cord. I don't think I have ever seen a DR work this hard. Hopefully whatever is there will be treatable.

Hmmm....there are some who would say that my brain has had something wrong with it for years.

Thanks again for making me feel like I have a lot of close friends who care.
Hugs to all of you.

BIG hugs Sammie.

I'm finally at Mom's with some time to catch up and saw what an incredibly difficult week you've had. All I can say is... everything you're battling has no idea how much love, humor, warmth, support and fierceness it's up against. With all my heart, I send you prayers, warm thoughts, love and hugs.

Thank you so much for keeping us posted. I expect it must be hard to talk about but it means the world to know you feel as though you know we're here, and how very much we care.

More hugs to you, Mark and all of your family.

Oh Sammie--

I don't know why you have to face more crap. I am glad that you will be able to have the MRI after all, and I am praying that everything will go smoothly. I know that they do MRI's on people with "stuff" in their bodies all the time, so surely they know how to keep your expander in place.

Big {{{hugs}}}

Sammie - How did it go today?? I've been thinking about you all day. (((hugs)))
The MRI went fine. It took about an hour in the tube. No metal flying out of my chest. Whew !!! I don't have any results yet but will try and see if my DR can get them tomorrow. I had my wedding rings on and I could feel the vibrations going thru the rings and down my my fingers. I mentioned it when they pulled me out of the the tube to inject the dye. The tech. said that was normal and my rings were OK.

I am exhaused tonight and am off to bed.
