Great picture Sammie!
Best wishes for a quick, uneventful, easy recovery from the surgery.
I'm curious as to what a normal, average person's risk of cancer is... because 20% doesn't sound bad at all! That means an 80% chance of nothing else.... and I would bet on 80% odds any day.

Hugs to you - and about your friend's "don't complain, it would be nicer to show gratitude blah blah blah" - tell her to go spread her sunshine somewhere else.
You have been through an awful ordeal and you deserve to be able to complain, vent, whine, scream, pout- whatever it takes to get you through to the other side.
The only thing that shouldn't be allowed by you is any idea of giving up the fight. If you're still fighting to beat it, then you have earned the right to do whatever you need to do, act any way you need to, say whatever you need to say.... and those who care about you and your recovery will unconditionally support you through it, during peppy days and not-so-peppy days.

Iím in trouble. I am running a 103.1 fever and the oncologist doesn't think it is his problem anymore as I have been off Taxol (chemo) for a month. I still am having the same symptoms thought. I canít walk straight without Mark helping me and the leg pain in both legs is horrible. Maybe it is a lupus flare or maybe the tissue expander in my chest needs to come out. I donít know.

I keep thinking ďplease call, someone please call meĒ. Maybe the docs are working together to try and figure out what is happening.

I have my bag packed if I have to go to the hospital, but I need help - NOW. If I do go into the hospital, Mark will keep you updated.

I am supposed to have surgery on Wednesday to remove the expander in my chest so they can do the MRI on my knee. I wouldnít mind waiting 2 weeks for the expander surgery, but the knee pain is too much.

I am having a lot of trouble trying to type this. My eyes see double.

Oh my God, Sammie...I am so so so sorry! Can Mark take you to the ER??

I hate feeling so helpless and not knowing what to do or say.

I hope you get relief from all of this SOON!

I'll be checking back for updates.

SOmetimes don't you just wish you could slap the docs?

Please make it known to them that this is not acceptable behavior. You are a patient then and forever IMHO. Get yourself to the hospital and please know we are all surrounding you with love and support.

Sammie,

Get your butt to the hospital. Don't wait for the doctors!

Do I have to come out there and kick your hiney?

Love,

Rainsong

Hi,
Just a quick update on Sammie.
She was admitted to Meriter Hospital this afternoon by her primary care doc Dr. Ringdahl.
Her fever has gone down. Her bone, muscle and leg pain is still extreme.
The goal is to find the cause of the fever and why it triggers the symptoms.
As of now they are checking for:
Viral and bacterial infections
Lupus flare
Biopsy the spot on her leg
Eliminate our concern of potential bone cancer in her left leg
Her surgery on Wednesday to remove the expander has been rescheduled for April 30th.
Meriter Radiology has agreed to do the MRI on her knee tomorrow and Sammie is relieved the process to address this extremely painful and crippling problem can finally start.

Take care and thanks for all your concerns

Mark

Just catching up.

Carp and a bunch of other words I can't say on SCS.

Mark, thanks so much for updating us. Please give Sammie all my love and you take care of yourself, too. Don't forget to eat what's good for you. We don't want you ending up in the hospital too.

Update about Sammie (Tuesday)

Hi,

Today Sammie had an MRI on her knee and a biopsy on her thigh. The results of the chest x-ray were negative (no pneumonia). She is still having serious problems with Ataxia (weakness, coordination, speech, drowsiness, etc). Nothing is showing up on any of the blood tests so far.

Take care,
Mark

Thanks for the update Mark!

I'm not sure to be happy that it isn't pneumonia, or upset that they don't know anything yet and she is still in pain!

(((Big hugs to both of you)))

Mark,

I agree with Karen. I'm also relieved to hear it's not pneumonia, but I hate to hear that Sammie's still in so much pain.

Hugs and very warmest wishes to both of you.

Hi,

What we found out today (Wednesday):

Sammie's left knee MRI showed a “complex lateral meniscus(crescent-shaped shock absorber) tear”…….. . Loosely translated the knee is really messed up and needs surgery which may (???) take place before being released from the hospital.

Her white blood count was low to begin with and has been dropping significantly every day. This makes her body less able to fight infections.

An x-ray showed no evidence of cancer in the bone below the left knee.

All blood cultures that have come back are negative for bacterial or viral infections.

Her Ataxia has improved a little today (good).

Take care, Mark

Mark, you are a good man. I have been waiting to hear an update all day and it is wonderful that you let us know what is going on. Thank you very much.

Your news sounds good tonight. The knee can be fixed, and Samantha's relief from the knee surgery should be immediate. ( I worked in the O.R for 20 years and helped do many of these.) Also great news about the leg x-ray.
Please let Samantha know that I am keeping her (and you) in my heart and sending healing thoughts.

Julie

Mark thank you for taking the time from caring for Sammie (and yourself I hope) to let us know what you've learned. My younger brother had the exact surgery Sammie will have on her knee and was feeling great two days later. I hope the same for her.

I'm happy to hear she has no other signs of infections.

I keep both of you in my thoughts and send virtual hugs daily.

Hi,

Sammie seamed better today.

Some of her medications were change today and if she responds well, she hopefully will be coming home tomorrow.

She is scheduled for Arthroscopic surgery next Thursday, April 24th, to fix a complex lateral meniscus tear in the left leg. If she could I think she would hop up and down in joy.

She is still scheduled for surgery on April 30th to remove the expander. I think she has a "perky" outlook.

The frustrating thing is that all the docs have not found the source of what has caused her to be hospitalized in the first place.

Take care,
Mark

Mark,

You're too funny! (perky!)

I'm so glad she's feeling better and will be home soon. Just wish they knew what caused her problems. Medicines can do strange things if not combined properly. Perhaps this is what happened. (Doctors had my mother on so many meds she "saw" dancing hairy lobsters in her hospital room and a little boy who wasn't there. Scary stuff.)

Sending hugs to you and Sammie,

Rainsong

Mark, thanks for the update. I am glad to har they can repair her knee w/ arthro. I had that at age 16, and the recovery time isn't bad at all, compared to an ACL surgery or what have you.

I am also so glad to hear her spirits are back up where they should be!

Keep us posted!

Take care,
Mark
So long as she remains perky everything will fall into place right? You are too funny. Warm Saturday morning hugs to Sammie and you.

Smile I'm Home

Hi,

I am home. Other than being tired and in a lot of knee pain, I am doing fairly well. Having ataxia is one not fun. I just want to get the surgery over on Thursday. Thanks Judie for letting me know that the recovery is fast and the knee pain also goes away fast. I am still having some coordination problems, but if you ask Mark, that is normal for me.

One strange thing is that I am falling asleep for a few seconds and dream of some sort of event and then later ask Mark about something pertaining to the dream and he looks at me and shakes his head. It never happened. I am confused (like thatís new).

Cancer patients get private rooms and that is very nice. I am very tired and this is taking for ever to write. Thank you to all of my wonderful friends who make me feel so much better than even my own mother and sisters. It means lot to me.

One surgery next week and hopefully one the text, and then I am on the road to recovery.

Thank you so very much,

Love and hugs to all of you.

Very glad to hear you're feeling better, and hoping the knee surgery goes well and eases your pain.

Hugs to you and Mark.

The dreams sound interesting. Isn't it weird when you have one of those? I remember the first time that happened to me, I'd been visiting my boyfriend and dozed off in his dorm room. When I woke up, I was mad at him!!!!!

Doh.

Anyway - WELCOME home again, and we're all sending our best waves of positive thought in your direction!
