Question Help! A mom of sons needs to purchase an American Girl doll

I have adopted a family in my church for Christmas...most requests were for clothes etc, but the pastor said that the daughter in the family (8 years old) wanted an AG doll. Mom knows how expensive that they are, and wouldn't let her list it. I have the wiggle room to purchase it, but need guidance about the choice. I'd like to keep it a surprise (and anonymous), so I don't want to ask the family. Should I choose one that looks like her? She is bi-racial. Or should I choose one of the historical dolls? She is a sweet thing - she loves and is very active in church. Please help me to make this Christmas a little magic. Thank you for taking the time to help.

So awesome of you. My daughter is biracial and it is important to me that she sees beauty in herself so I chose to purchase an American girl doll for her (on eBay) that looks like her.

I would choose a Just Like Me doll as well. She'll LOVE it!

A just like me doll is a great idea..... What a beautiful way to share Christmas. You can use coupons from mikes and Joanns for 18 inch doll clothes.... Don't forget to get her new BBF a nightgown.... My granddaughter considers a nitie a must have for each of her AG dolls.

we referred to my daughters AG doll as mini-me. Get the "Dolls that look like Me". My daughter was not really into dolls but she did like that doll.
