I bought a great book at Michaels last week on granny squares. Bought some yarn this weekend too to try a few out.

I've never liked stitching granny squares - starting a crochet project is my least favourite part, so doing something where I have to start over & over & over again is definitely not for me!
My parents had a most gorgeous tablecloth that was done for them as a wedding gift by my great-aunt. I would LOVE to make myself something like that, but the thought of having to start all those medallions...........

I admittedly don't like doing pieces either... when I have done granny squares before, its always been one giant one made into an afghan.
But this book had some pretty ones that had flowers as centers, like daisies, etc. So I was intrigued by it. Tried making a few the other night and I liked the way they look so may go ahead and just little by little make a big pile then put them together as a 'garden' theme afghan to put on my covered deck outside. : )

Have another question ladies. Okay, you start a doily and it ruffles up on the 6th or 7th row, do you keep going and it will even out? I know the ruffle rule means too many stitches. But it seems every pattern I try out of those magazines starts the same way. I've tried different hook sizes and yarn sizes it always ends up the same. Is there a secret "rule" to doily patterns [or any pattern] that every crocheter knows but me?

I go to a crochet forum where lots of the ladies make doilies. I don't have the patience myself to do it, lol.

It could be your tension/how you hold your thread, or if you crochet very tightly that might be causing this.

The ladies at the other board say when it starts to ruffle, you should "stretch" the doily in different directions, to loosen up the stitches. Also, it tends to straighten out when you do more and more rows. After you are finished, you can wet it and block it if all else fails.

Hello Christina, and everyone! Yes, fall is almost here, although Oklahoma still has some hot days ahead I'm sure. I can't wait to get out my sweaters and boots.

I've been busy making cute crocheted hobo purses for Christmas gifts for the gals in my family. Also making a ripple afghan for my niece. Afghans take quite a lot of time, so I break it up - make a purse which goes pretty quick, and then do a few rows on the afghan.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the purse pattern. They turn out really cute, only require single and double crochet, and just take about a skein of yarn to make. I've made 7 of them so far, and have a couple more to go:

This is the time of year that I love to get the yarn out and crochet while watching a good movie. I am still unpacking though and getting organized first, but know what projects I want to finish up and work on.

Its been a big year of change for me, Toni. New job, moved to Idaho with DH/DSDs, learned things and then divorced DH and he and his teen DSDs moved back to WV, I ended up with a very large house that I'd contracted to custom build and couldn't really back out of by then..., and I'm adjusting to it all by myself here in Boise.
God is good to me really and I am learning and healing. I love Boise, its an awesome well-kept secret. I'm 13 hours from my kids and grandson and family, so going back regularly to visit them as well.

Good to see you back on here!

And who is that in the avatar pic? Too small to be your sweetie... or did you have another and I've missed that update???

Popping in. Can't stay long. Trying to get my full-length novel roughed out before I start the next novella in Nov. Music promotion is keeping me more than busy.

I did go into our local yarn shop the other day and bought a skein of baby alpaca to try. I need a one-skein scarf for each of the Polish Sinfonia chamber members. Well... I don't have to use just one but if I'm using this baby alpaca at $14.50 a skein - yeah, I'm sticking to one. I have 18 of the scarves to make before Dec. 10th.

Susan, this seems to be a year for change.
For now my girls are only 5 hours away. But my daughter has accepted a job in WA state. Sooo far away for me as close as I am to the girls - especially Adrian. Grandpa has no geography concept and doesn't think it's that much farther. Boy is he in for a reality check. By 3x!

Well, I figure it will take me most of winter to sort through what I have at this rate, and I have to have a place to live at least through Spring with this job as a minimum and then will decide what's next in life I guess (or rather hopefully have understood by then what God wants me to do next...).

I haven't had much crafting time lately - overtime at work has been eating into my play time.
However, I have managed to finish one of these, and currently have three more in various stages of completion (I need 6 altogether for Christmas presents). Not my pattern, but I am so grateful to the designer who posted it for free!
Crochet Cradle Purse Part 1 of 3 Bag / purse that turns into a Doll Cradle - YouTube There are two more parts to the instructions, so make sure you either watch them all or go to her website & download the printed pattern.

Default Cute, easy crocheted coaster pattern

Was looking around for quick easy Christmas gift ideas and found this. The pattern is simple and the finished coasters are so cute:

I bought some fun new yarn and a pattern download to try to make myself a sweater. I never seem to finish any for me as they never seem to turn out a good fit, but I'm going to try again anyhow. If not, will have to figure out if my sister or daughter or mom or DIL fit it... haha.

Default Beginners (and others, too) Listen Up!

With the Christmas crunch fast approaching, I want to share a website to remind you that pretty can also be simple and fast.

Here is a link to some really cute, pretty scarves that are made using only a double crochet stitch.

If you are just starting to crochet, I would suggest you give this a try. There are so many lovely yarns out there, and the possibilities are endless:

Hi everyone! Just checking in. I pulled out yarns to crochet in the evenings while snuggled up under an afghan. I have started a sweater pattern that I fell in love with for myself... not so sure how it will turn out but figured why not try!?

I love crochet! I am going to crochet a few covers for things like kindle etc. to give otu as presents this festive season. I just thought, it's something different and it would make a nice present

To me, homemade always is best because it says someone took the time to make something with you in mind.

Oh, Bugga, those are cute. I just don't have any teens anymore to make them for... oh wait, there is a neighbor's teen girl... haha, she might think it goofy but I can use her for a guinea pig just to make them for fun...

Just printed that pattern, Bugga, and another from Ravelry. It has been a while since I have been on there but just went on last night... so addictive. The hats are sooo cute, I just have to try to make some.

Yes, I love Ravelry. I love the patterns, and also seeing the projects that people have made from them.

I've been on a real crocheting "binge" since about September, and have made lots and lots of Christmas gifts!

Awesome! I did a lot of crocheting last year but this year have barely had time to. I just downloaded some patterns and bought a couple of magazines though, and started digging into the piles of yarn for inspiration...

Hey ladies!
Coming out of hiding. Hoping 2014 is much calmer and productive LOL
The only crocheting I managed for 2013 were components of various items to complete 15 hat/scarf/glove sets for the Mitten Tree at our local bank. Items are taken to the local grade school a few days before Christmas break. I hope to do 50+ for 2014.

A girl from my daycare eons ago sent me a link on pinterest of a braided crocheted scarf she wanted. I made one of those and she loves it! Now her older sister wants one. LOL
I don't have a pic but you can see it here: I LOVE THIS!!!! Crochet (or knit) three long pieces ... | Yarn & Thre?

I used a J hook and started with a 150 chain. I think it came out a little long but looked like the length of the one in the picture. Kassie doubled hers so it hugged close to her throat, almost like a cowl.

Cute, Kelly! And you say "only" 15 sets??? Wow, that is awesome I think!
I am not sure I have finished even one crochet project this year!
I have a sweater that is about half done sitting on the sofa next to me that I started a couple of months ago and keep staring at it now, thinking I need to finish it but just can't get motivated to do it. I bought the yarn to make my grandson the fox hat on Pinterest too but haven't started it, and also printed some patterns for the boot cuffs but wasn't sure who wore boots though I did see that my daughter and DIL wore them while I visited so I may make them some for next year.

Hope each of you have a blessed new year. Personally, I know I am really looking forward to it and hoping its one filled with positives.

Kelly -- I think I tried to friend you on FB -- hope it was you anyhow! Are you on there?
