Hi everyone! I've been missing SCS lately and wanted to say hi and see what you all are doing these days. Summer, I can't wait to see that 'monster' you're working on! You do such beautiful work.

Hi, Amanda! Welcome back... Babies have a way of using up our time, don't they? Can't wait to see your scarf. I just finished one, too. Winter is finally over, but I happened to come across a pattern that I could not pass up. lol.

Just checking in! Haven't crocheted at all during the move but may start again soon, though mostly with thread I think instead of yarn, keeping it cooler in the summer.

I have never crocheted with thread before instead of yarn. . . do you have to alter patterns to do this or are their specific patterns for crochet thread?

There are specific patterns for thread. Just google thread crochet or crochet thread - as with yarn, the possibilities are endless..... ( and the projects can get reeeeeeeealy small)......

Also, the hooks are usually steel, and are very small also. Good eyesight required to do this. Ask me how I know.

I made some cute little tiny crocheted flowers last year to put on cards. It was a one-time project.

If you are interested in crocheting flowers, here is a great pattern. You can vary the size of the flower by the size thread/yarn and hook you use.

I love to crochet with thread because its so light I can toss a project in a ziploc and do it anywhere on the go. I even took it on the flights with me whenever I'd fly, and by the time I landed, would have over a dozen or more flowers, more on long flights.
I use to make large doilies, and once even did a dress for my daughter, years ago. Now I stick to little things.

Good morning to you too! And to all of you!
We are expecting a heat wave here of temps in the 100's for the next six days.
We plan on getting some tubes and tubing down the river for a little of that, but otherwise may be inside in the AC for a good bit. Which for me means some crafting time I hope! I did find a store online here that offers knitting classes on Saturdays so I was thinking about dropping by it maybe and seeing if I can get the knack of that. I can crochet but knitting eludes me thus far.

Mornin' everybody! Will have pics later of recent crochet projects! I bought some crochet magazines on the "bay." I went nuts over this one that was the cover. Oh boy, it was a nightmare! I must redone that thing 6 or 7 times! I had to change some of the stitches before it started to lay down properly.

I've tried to knit off and on for years. I love to crochet, but knitting just doesn't "click" with me for some reason, and I don't enjoy doing it.

I haven't popped in to this thread in ages and thought I better poke my head in.

Susan, funny you should say that about knitting. I'm another that crochets but doesn't knit, so just recently signed myself up for an online knitting class. And have also (by chance, but I'll take it) found someone local who is willing to help me learn. Going to start with just a hat and will hopefully be able to do some hats & scarves eventually.

Does anyone have any good shawl patterns/books they can recommend? My grandmother is 90, and even in 80-90 degree weather seems to always be wearing long sleeves or even a sweater these days. I was thinking to perhaps make her a nice shawl for Christmas. Given my lack of knitting skills at this point, I would like something crocheted. Perhaps something that can be made with a worsted weight?

Oh good, I got it to work now. Okay, here are the doily things I entered at the county fair. I still owe you all a pic of the pincushion and teddy bear. Will get those up tomorrow.

I have, but there is just so much out there, I'd rather go with a pattern someone recommends KWIM?

Your pieces are gorgeous SummerBreeze! Hope you win something!

I wish there was a fair around here for me to enter. Unfortunately, I am a city girl and there aren't any.

Good morning, ladies. Wanted to share a neat crochet hook/tool I just found out about and ordered. If you ever crochet an edging around a blanket, or a dish towel, you know how hard it can be to poke your crochet hook through the fabric to make the foundation to crochet your edging on.

Here is a new crochet hook that is "sharp" on the point, so it will go through the fabric easily - no need to struggle or punch holes all around the edge. Here is a link:

Funny you should mention that - I ordered one and it just came last week. I've never done a crochet edging around anything and bought this thinking to try it.

Great minds run in the same channel, right?

I've used a small steel crochet hook and regular crochet thread to make an edging around terry washcloths. You punch the hook through the edge, and single crochet all around. Then you chain about 10, skip a stitch, and slip stitch to your foundation chain. Chain 10, skip one, slip stitch. Really easy, but makes a nice ruffly edging around the washcloth.

I'm looking forward to getting this new hook, because sometimes it's a little difficult to punch through the fabric.

I think it will be great to make flannel baby blankets without having to hem the sides - just crochet around and maybe do a shell stitch border.

This is my favorite book of prayer shawls... I have used it to make over a dozen and even though I have other books and patterns, I always go back to these for some reason. I love to crochet them out of Homespun Yarn, so soft.

Hi and thank you! I did not have a written pattern--I looked at a photo and guessed at it. There are some patterns for the pincushion that you can buy online or maybe even find a pattern for free at some crochet sites. I know it is a very old pattern.
Yes, that is a glass[ and metal] candleholder we found at Goodwill. Nailed it!

Be careful! Once you start thinking about what would make great pincushion/make-do stands, you starting seeing them everywhere; thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales............I'm making it worse aren't I? LOL!!

Anyway, glad to spread the inspiration bug.

Well, I received my Sharp Crochet Hook today in the mail with its little booklet but have to say I'm a bit disappointed by it. I don't think it is any different than my other needles, doesn't seem to be any sharper than those, and the book has terrible instructions really. Bummer. But I am inspired by ideas so will try it out still... hopefully looks are deceiving and it works better than looks.

Does anyone else have trouble with the patterns in the Decorative Crochet magazine?

Haven't used them in a while but check their website too for any corrections perhaps.

As far as I know they went out of business a little while back; I couldn't find a website for them. I've completed 2 doilies and started another and have had trouble with all of them. The skill level is intermediate to advanced, but I follow the pattern and instructions. I don't understand. I must be doing something wrong, I just don't know what. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
