I finally learned how to make a ripple pattern, yet I cannot get the ends to work out properly! One side keeps getting shorter, and the other keeps growing! I've frogged it so many times, the yarn is getting worn out. Does anybody have a suggestion, please?

As you start each row, make your "step up" chain, then be sure that you put your first real stitch in the next stitch below, NOT in the same place where you came up from for your step up chain. This is likely where you're increasing a stitch.

At the end of each row, you need to put the last stitch in the top of the step up chain from the previous row. This is where you're probably shrinking.

i havent logged on or commented in a while.....

i only intially knew one stitch, didnt even know the name of it. soooo, i found some sites that had pics(i'm visual, still cant follow the directions on how to do stuff....i need to find a website that teaches you how to read crochet patterns. "crocheting for dummies" or something, lol) but i have a blanket my grandmother made me when i was a very little girl and it's the chevron pattern or ripple as i've also read....i just barely learned how to properly join colors and end them etc etc.....so i just did a basic simple scarf and finishing it off. i am still wanting to learn how to do the "edges" of projects too.....

Hi ladies. My DS has asked me to make him a new sweater or blanket! Yay - celebrating that he did not ask me for another 'Transformer'...

How wonderful! He must know how soft and warm they will be and be comforted knowing you made it with love too. Beats a transformer any day!

Hey Christina! Good to see you
That's one smart little boy. I'd rather have something all warm and fuzzy instead of a hard/cold toy. What colors are you going to use?

Hi... Well the last sweater I made him was blue and brown. He loves anything blue. He has seen me make many little girl things in the past year and said 'Hey, I think I need a new sweater, too.' He is so funny. How are things with you?

Too cute.

Busy here as always, though Dec. is my slowest month. I don't host any writing marathons and stuff in Dec. It's my month to close out the year and figure out where I'm headed into the next one.

Christmas in your new home. How's the decorating coming?

Decorating...? Slow and sporadic. Actually, here it is. Did you happen to see a pic I posted last Christmas of my DS's new kitty IN our Christmas tree? He was about head-high, right in the middle of our tree. No harm done. This year we bought a lot of new ornaments because we figured we would find some damaged after the move. Decorated the tree the other night. DS was soooo proud of it. Today I heard a crash. The same kitty was responsible. I don't have a picture uploaded yet, but you can imagine. Tree on floor. All the water from the huge base soaking the carpet. Glass and beads strung everywhere. DS in tears. It's been a messy day. Tomorrow maybe we will do another tree.

i'm going to tackle or try to at least, to take on the chevron pattern someday!!

i wish there was a group here local where i am that meets or something, so i could get advice and just see how other crocheters are doing...learn from each other. i'll have to try and find one...

Oh, sweetie! I know it is far from funny. But trust me, it will be a laughable memory down the road.

I have 2 cats and thankfully neither of them 'climb' the tree. I put things on the lower branches they can play with and I don't have to worry what happens to them.

Actually, Spirit is about the size of a miniture new-born panther. I shudder to think of him in the tree LOL

Check with your local public library, they may have a group that meets once a month, if not, ask them if they would let you start a group and use their space, never hurts to ask!

Some Michaels stores are starting classes up again. If you have one near you, see if they have a crochet instructor. If not, perhaps they still have the name of whomever might have taught it previously that you could contact. They usually know other crocheters in the area.

Post on bulletin boards as well that you are looking to meet other crocheters. Sometimes retirement villages have groups that may be open to non-residents.

Wow! Go you! I have a writer friend who runs marathons. I won't be running marathons any time soon. My knees and back would never tolerate it. But after the holidays I'm back on the treadmill. I'll race ya!

My elliptical right now is wedged literally between scrapbooking and stamping areas. Will be nice if we get the new place as it wuold have a better space adn be near the shower too so that I can jump on in the morning, jump off, jump in the shower, and get my day started.

Do any of you crochet pot holders anymore?
I guess I'm sentimental but I remember those old potholders that were crocheted and matched towel toppers, etc. I wonder if anyone uses them anymore....

I don't use the crocheted pot holders any more, but I love my crocheted dish cloths.

With this cold weather, curling up on the couch in front of the fireplace with a big pile of yarn and crocheting a big afghan sounds perfect!

Do you mean ones you use everyday (yep, I still use mine) or the really old-fashion ones that were made just for display and to dress up your kitchen (Grandma made some of these, of course, if you used them you would have burned yourself).

crocheting while using the elliptical? ohhhh lordy, that would be interesting! lol.....

yes, lets run together!!! it's not quite "full fledge" running cuz i'm only going 3.4mph and "running" starts at like 4mph +......i havent run since highschool so after that and having three kids, etc....this has been interesting, about as interesting as re-learning crocheting!! i love both!!!! there was an update on the weather for the run(it's a resolution run on new years-midnight benefiting MADD)...it's supposed to be freezing!!! well freezing for me that is, lol.....so that's my goal, finish this intial race and to learn the chevron pattern for a blanket!!

Your terminology is correct

Most did use the GS or a version of because they were quick and could use up yarn scraps from other projects. Just like quilters, they didn't waste anything when it came to making up and making do.

They had all sorts of designs... I remember making some that were sunflowers, and I see all sorts in the Annie's Attic catalog or Herschnerrs.

mamarocks, no mine are not the granny square ones, they are just single crochet. I've only seen the granny squares for afghans. Some of them (afghans) are just gorgeous!!!

And I never realized how many different types of granny squares there are!!!
I learned a basic 3 dc, 3 ch in eac corner, type so I was surprised to see all these!

Here's another question for you. How many of you filet crochet? I used to do that years ago but haven't tried it since I think 1986 or so???

I've never done it, but I know I'd have the patience for it if it were something I really wanted to make. I just haven't found 'the' pattern yet. Then there's the question of time LOL

Hey. I haven't posted in a while. I just finished a baby blanket. Baby due in January so I am ahead of the game. Everyone wants me to make a hat to go with it. Why does everyone always want something else. (Sorry that is the whiny me who has too many homemade Christmas presents on her list)

And on the potholders. I have one I made called the magic square. I taught someone the pattern and she made them for gifts and everyone loves them. Just thought I would tell you. Oh and the dishcloths are very popular as well. I guess you do have to get the right people though.

I know exactly what you mean! Seems like everytime I make something, someone else is saying I need to make something else or something to coordinate! Its never just complement on what was made! Nuts!

Hi, ladies! And a Merry Christmas to all of you. I hope you are all doing well. Things are actually calming down here and I just can't believe it. I mean - we are very busy bustling about with Christmas-sy things, but life in general is c a l m i n g . . . finally.

Enjoying catching up on your granny conversation. I have never done filet, but I do want to do some Irish crochet. I have a magazine tucked away about the history of it and it's really interesting. The crochet itself is gorgeous, but it is very fine work and I know it will be a challenge. Anyone do that? Happy day to all.

I haven't tried it, but sounds wonderful!

I pulled out the pattern you sent me from the scarf you made me last year (which I still love and wear a lot, thank you again!). I wanted to try to make some for my older SDs but haven't had a chance... maybe over the next few days...

One thing I've always wanted to learn how to do is Bobbin Lace. I used to go to Renaissance festivals and Rendezvous encampments and one lady there did beautiful work. I would just stand and watch. She'd let me stand behind her so I could watch over her shoulder from her perspective. It's still on my list of Things I Want to Try
