Ladies,

As a newbie to the crochet world, can anyone offer me some advise on how to read a crochet pattern?

I have a pattern, I have the key/legend, but it still does not make sense to me.

Thanks.

Joan-would absolutely love that pattern-we do a hat/scarf/mitten tree at church and that would cover all three

I certainly would love the pattern for a Scoodie if you are sharing it. It sounds like something you could make for anyone.

Thanks!
And thanks, Mary. Its my favorite verse for the last few years. DH is studying ministry, and we are much more focused on service and His will. I think Romans 8:28 sums that well... All things work together for good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose.

Well, finished up the baby blanket for my grandson-to-be. Homespun Colonial blue I believe is the color. I just love how soft Homespun is. I did a simple granny stitch and then several rows of single crochet around the edge to give it that solid finish. I'll try to take a pic and post later.
I still have a couple of skeins left so am trying to make a bunting for the baby too. Since he is due in February and in Colorado, thought a nice warm bunting would be good.
Found a couple of patterns online but wanted to keep it simple and not too frilly or complicated since its a boy and Homespun. So I'm winging it to come up with my own pattern for now.

Does anyone know how to find yardage for Caron's 1 pound skein of worsted weight yarn? I want to substitute it for another and I need the yardage.
Thanks

A prayer request if you please.

The family of a friend of mine who use to spend a lot of time on SCS has found themselves in a situation. He is a minister, she is a children's minister. They just found out the church they've been with almost 5 years has decided they can no longer afford a full-time pastor. They are a family of 7 and find themselves looking for a new church. He has several resume's out but things are so tough right now. Prayers for this family are much appreciated.

Will most certainly lift them in prayers. Understand the situation all too well. DH is studying ministry, and his father was a pastor in this area for over 52 yrs at the same church. Things have changed drastically, particularly with the economy the way it is. Praying the Lord will lead them and help them to resolve the situation.

Good morning..
Just a quick check in. I've been busy cutting/ splitting firewood the last couple of days. Taking advantage of the awesome weather. We've been in the uper 70's. I do domestic stuff during the day, write for 3 or 4 hours at night then curl up in the recliner with tv and a crochet hook. I need to take some daylight time today to start another scarf.

It's National Novel Writing Month for thousands of adventurous people. We pledged to write 50,000 words of a new novel between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30th. I'm about 7,000 words behind where I should be today to make goal by end of the month. But I'm writing all day tomorrow so there's hope. I've already written 3x more than I did last year. hehe

That is so awesome, Kelly. I'm envious! I have several started but never finished... seems like I get going on an idea, get a lot written then it fizzles and I don't know where to go with it so stop. Then it will happen again another time. My friends keep asking when I'll finish one and I said in my old age!

Default Pricing Question

My friend asked me to chrochet the tops on some kitchen towels for her and it willing to pay me something. It's an easy project, hardest part is getting the first row into the towel, after that it goes fast. I'm using left over yarn I have and buttons from my button stash. What would be a fair price to ask per towel?

My mom makes them and I think she asks $5.95 a towel at fairs if I remember correctly, but it depends on your area as I've seen them here for $3.95 each too.

Sorry, I should have said she's supplying the towels. I'm just doing the crocheting using yarn I already have and sewing on a button from my stash. What do you think would be fair $1 or $2 per towel?

havent logged onto here for awhile cause i wasnt crocheting, but now my dd wanted something to do during break, sooooo.....i never knew but only one stitch and didnt know which one. turns out it is a double crochet(i think that's right, lol...been looking on annie's attic instructions)...so i've been checking out the basic stitch section...got most of them in my head, easy to pick up....until i looked at a pattern. omg!!! even a simple one is intimidating!! lol....what's the easiest pattern that you all have tried first? any other sites that show pics to see of how the stitch is supposed to look like?

thanks bunches for all the help

ps.
i did look at the chevron pattern(i have this goregous blanket my grandma made me when i was little that i still have which was my inspiration to learn this specific pattern)...ughhh hard !!

Try not to be too intimidated by patterns. Once you know the basics - single crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, chain stitch - it's just a matter of where you put the stitch that makes the patterns different. Just read the pattern one element at a time and pay attention to where it tells you to put the next stitch - sometimes it will tell you to skip a stitch or to put more than one stitch in the next stitch. And don't be afraid to do a little bit of a pattern to see if you like it before committing to making a huge project. I frequently whip up a few little samples with some random yarn before I choose a pattern. Some of the prettiest patterns have turned out to be so boring that I was glad I didn't make them!

I always started my kids on the basic chain stitch. Once they got the hang of it, added a second row (that's always the toughest I think... getting the first row done, and always took a while to practice).
Then I had them do a few rows of single crochet so they can see how it looks. Only need about 15 stitches across, just so they can see it, like a scarf size even works well.
Then I show how a double crochet looks.
Let them do a few rows of that.
Then treble crochet.
Let them do a few rows of that.

It helps so they can see the differences in the stitches I think.

When they felt comfortable with that and understanding how that goes, I taught them a basic granny square pattern. One of my twins now hated doing crochet... never could focus past the single crochet level.
But the other one has a big afghan she keeps adding to, little by little, and its just an ongoing large granny square.

Another tip -- I would use a basic tightly woven acrylic to start with and teach with. Anything like Homespun or any fibres, which is of course always the fun stuff they want to use, makes it very hard to see the stitches and know what they are doing, and can get frustrating.

And I had mine start with a larger hook, like a J or K for example.

Most simple scarves are one stitch patterns, just rows of the same stitch.
OR
Pick a simple shawl pattern, one that is a rectangle is best, or a simple straight pattern, rectangle, solid color afghan/blanket.

This is a little more complex, if you want to learn how to do popcorn stitches, but very cute and makes a great gift too. Log In / Join the Lion Brand community to get free knitting and free crochet patterns and more!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Quiet, wet day in the Ozarks with the grandtoddler. We've been baking cookies and crafting. I really need to write tonight but will depend on getting her to bed You all remember those toddler stages. hehe

thanks bunches for all the help

ps.
i did look at the chevron pattern(i have this goregous blanket my grandma made me when i was little that i still have which was my inspiration to learn this specific pattern)...ughhh hard !!
That's how I learned. My stepmom tried to teach me and I just couldn't get it. Probably wasn't paying a lot of attention. LOL I was more into sewing. After I left home I found an afghan patter I loved. So I picked up a stitch book, the size hook I needed and the yarn I liked. I practiced the stitch until it looked like a row on the pattern then went to town. LOL I guess I just needed to KNOW how before I was ready to LEARN how.

Just take it one stitch at a time and you'll be fine.

Good Luck!

Hi all. I just found this thread! I've been stitching for less than a month but love it. I meet a friend weekly at a coffee shop for mental health. So far, I've made quite a collection of items. 8 or so hats, 6 scarfs, 8 washcloths...I'm working on Christmas gifts.

I just paged through the posts and found LOTS of patterns that I've bookmarked! I need to take some photos of my completed projects and share.
