If there's not God, there's no need of the soul. Everything is just chemistry.... Feelings are chemistry too, right? So much we don't understand.

Does there have to be a god in order for there to be a soul? I mean, does it have to be a guy in a robe sitting in the clouds creating souls? Or could there be something that lives on outside the physical body? From what I've studied in Buddhism, there isn't a "divine intelligence" but there is a soul that lives on and on in future and past lives. Souls aren't created or destroyed..they are just there. Profound thoughts encouraged?

Then I should be much smarter Honestly though, if souls were never destroyed but just kept getting new bodies (that is what you meant right - reincarnation), then I think there would be much more in the way of remembered experience. I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well.

Ummmm.... I dunno!!

I personally have trouble believing in a supernatural with god, but I'm not sure why. Hmmm... I guess I think supernatural things are stuff we just don't understand yet.

I think most of my philosophies have evolved after watching too much Star Trek (not the original series tho). And it's not that ST has any big ideas, it's more the situations they come across have made ME think. Ya know?

This is my feeling too. Why does the soul need to have a God to exist? Can't a metaphysical question be answered completely without a god?

How can I feel like me and yet have it feel separate from things that my body experiences? I have never even been close to accepting in the stories of God so why do I still feel like the "energy", "core" "personality" that is me is a separate thing from my teeth, hair, digestive system? Separate from when I feel happy or am not so healthy.

It's so difficult to put into words. IT would be much easier if you all could crawl around in my head for a bit. THere's plenty of room

I just wanted to stop in and say hello.

So, you know, in order to get one's Eagle Scout rank, one has to believe in a god, doesn't matter what god, but a god.

DS has known this all along, and a few years ago, stopped advancing in rank.

We talked about it over a year ago, and he told me this was the reason why. He liked scouts, he liked the activities, enjoys camping, etc. But he felt he couldn't lie about that question when it finally came up. He's quiet about how he feels.

Interesting, huh.

UGH!! I have been a long time lurker in this thread (hi Karen!! I am finally posting) but was never courageous enough to post. Wrose, I am sooo glad you posted this though. Next week is the cub/boy scout recruiting at my son's school. He is in first grade this year and I have been wanting to put him in scouts. This is something I surely want to address with pack leaders. While I am not against religion (my daughter goes to a Lutheran preschool and prays three times a week before snack) I hate that you can not progress through the ranks if you don't believe in God.

I wonder if it's this way for the Girl Scouts?? Anyone know? I imagine next year when my daughter goes to public Kinder I will be addressing that.

OK, all that being said, *Hi, my name is Joyclynn and I am an agnostic married to an on-again-off-again (non-practicing) Catholic.*

Hi Joyclynn! There now, it wasn't that hard to post was it?

I don't remember my daughter's scout troop being religious. Just look for one that doesn't meet at or is affiliated with a religious school or church and you should be OK.

Wow! That is interesting...I had recently showed some interest in enrolling my six year old...my husband told me that they are a very religious organization especially here where I live....and they make no bones about it! Having said that, I declined to put him in it....

My six year old brings up God a lot asking me questions about the stuff that they are NOT supposed to bring up at school...it is a little irritating because it is hard to answer questions when I don't buy into it....

As you all know, I'm a lurker! I thought I'd chime in on this...The girl scout promise is:

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

You can replace "God" with whatever word your beliefs dictate. That's how its been explained to me recently.

Hi Joyclynn! Welcome to the thread!

As for the Boy Scouts, I remember when they made a big deal about not accepting gay boys. I kept waiting for the Girl Scouts to make a big deal about lesbians, but never did hear anything.

Victoria, everyone can see that your four-legged spider is an eight-legged spider from the FRONT VIEW.

(we are referring to this thread: Pet peeve: six-legged spiders:
http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/fo....php?t=3826650 yikes, sorry for the TOS)

Besides, her pet peeve was six-legged spiders NOT four-legged ones. *grin*

I think the "religiousness" of the troop might depend on the area or location of the troop.

Generally Boy Scouts isn't "religious" but they do state that you must believe in some kind of deity.

I know that you can advance to a point by being not-religious but talking about spirituality and respect for others. In other words, you can avoid the issue a bit.

But yeah, belief in some kind of "God" is integral to their code.

Interestingly, my DH was most disappointed. And yet, DH is not at all religious - but he apparently does believe in God. I was never quite sure, because he's so quiet about it. I actually asked him once, and we'd been married for ten years!!!

Wrose funny that you mention it was years of marriage before you asked DH outright. I recently asked mine and he said he didn't believe. I kinda left it at that not wanting to say anything to offend him about his parents being religious. But I got the feeling he never believed much less looked to deeply into why he didn't and others did. Granted his parents are newly religious, attending church more frequently after DH's brother was killed (drunk driver) in 96.

Within MY extended family there is no one who attends church. I doubt many even believe in God so I'm not sure what kind of questions might come up with the kids. ANd considering we live in a pretty liberal openminded area I'm hoping it won't really be an issue and they can go which ever way they feel comfortable.

Thanks for all the help. Sadly, I am not totally sure what kind of area I am in because it's not something I generally talk to people about. The meetings are at the public school, which is better than meeting at a church. I asked around school a little but didn't seem to get any straight answers. How old was your son when things started getting tricky? If you don't mind me asking

Interestingly, my DH was most disappointed. And yet, DH is not at all religious - but he apparently does believe in God. I was never quite sure, because he's so quiet about it. I actually asked him once, and we'd been married for ten years!!!

Well Sandra just get in with a chat thread and that will take you over to the dark side quicker than you can imagine.

I may have joined around the time you did but I've only been posting, gosh, a year ago March so that's a year and a half.

Plus I am fortunate enough to be a SAHM to the two kidlets.

Have y'all seen the trailer for Religulous? It is a movie with Bill Maher.

And why hasn't anyone told me about disbeliefnet.com before? Maybe because it is late (fo me), but it is an hilarious site.

I forgot about this coming out in the fall. I will look forward to it. Should be a good discussion thread! Never heard of disbeliefnet either.

How old was your son when things started getting tricky? If you don't mind me asking
Not until High School really. Probably.

In our area, they talk about "reverence" and respect, and understand that a lot of these families are not religious, which is fine. Our troop is well-mixed, I remember one Cub celebrating earning his religious award, and it was the Muslim award. His mom and I were friends at school, and taught me a bit of Pakistani cooking. The religious award is voluntary, obviously not all kids pursue it.

If your son hasn't thought about it much, and you aren't religious, and don't go to a troop affiliated with a church, you can probably keep away from religious activities and questions for awhile. It might depend on how open your son is about his beliefs.

As far as I know, my son didn't know he was an atheist when he started, I used to take him to church and CCD, up until about 3rd grade. Not sure when he decided....

Actually...this is the only thread that I visit consistently and post consistently on....I have learned over the years that it is better to leave some things unsaid...I pretty much practice that in the other threads....mind you, I think that if they had a "chat room"...I would be close to you in posts....

*grin* Thanks Sandra, for all the compliments! *laughing* A bunch of the 5156 posts are gallery comments... and as Victoria said, *laughing again* I am a blabbermouth. It also helps that I really enjoy the physical act of typing, so it is easy to post. The 5156 post count doesn't even include PMs huh? *grin*

Time to draw...ah well... I actually kill time at work by drawing if sports is on the TV . Timewise, it also helps that I don't have any kids, plants, or pets (low maintenance life!). I do the yardwork, which is just spraying Round-Up for five minutes every few months ("yard" is covered with concrete and bricks). And my DH does the shopping, the cooking and the laundry. In return, I make cards and he gets first pick, even if they were meant for someone else.

I do spend HOURS on the computer, surfing SCS (as you've found!) and lurking on WetCanvas (kind of like SCS for artists) (my total post count there is like, 7). My only time obligation is my job. . Sometimes I wish I had more of a social life, but all my friends are much busier! As long as I have my once-a-month card workshop, I'm good.

Drawing has been a lifelong habit which just occurred naturally because my parents (during that bit of our lives) were poor, and wanted to save whatever money they got so they gave me tons of scrap paper and lots of pens, pencils and crayons. I used to fold copy paper in half and draw on them and those were my cards (I loved making cards as far back as pre-school days). *happy grin* I did not like to do anything else - hated sports, or any kind of physical activity at all, hated video games, etc. - did not have many other hobbies. So I drew. Much of the time I drew when I was not supposed to, like when I was bored in school. I either slept or drew in class, and this was from 1st grade all the way to the end of college. I would draw in vain attempts to stay awake in church too.

I'm not a true artist; for the amount of time I've been drawing, one would expect my art to be exceptional. But I've only ever drawn what I think is "good enough" because I am always too lazy to try to correct my mistakes. Also, instead of drawing from the heart, I draw from necessity or boredom. I can copy well enough and execute my sister's wishes okay (I draw for her), but have lots of problems being creative!!!!

I do want to improve my art, and that's why I've been lurking about on WetCanvas. I do also want to improve my card-making - and that's why I hang out here too!!

Most of my posts are within a thread of a group of friends not random chat threads. Lord knows I don't fit in with half of them But sometimes you catch a good ECC thread and you can hike up your post count without even realizing it.
