Most of my friends are guys and we all like metal and its hard to make them cards because i hate using the same things over and over again! lol

I liked the quote too. I Googled Madalyn Murray O'Hair as I had not heard of her. What a woman.

Excellent.

Former head of American Atheists will be speaking about O'Hair this weekend. See here.

Madalyn suffered a beating by the Baltimore police, persecution, vandalism of her home and automobile, loss of her job and verbal vilification such as rarely happens to Atheists today.

Not sure if the last part is entirely true. I guess it's mostly nasty emails that atheist organizations get.

Seen on a local church sign: The sunrise is a gift from the lord.

Any thoughts?

Maybe the rotation of the earth is a gift from god. Hmmm - don't think I'll pursue that line of thought!

Sunday evening, my DH and I went to our favorite Thai restaurant. The owners are a couple, and daughter who helps out, and they are not super good with English. DH understands the woman better than I do. Anyway, we found the place last fall and go almost every week and they like us, she brings us free desserts to try!

So that evening, it was still light out and rainy, not rainy, one of those days, and then we saw it - a half circle of rainbow. Just gorgeous. When the woman came over, I pointed to it and she said softly, "beautiful," then squoze her eyes tight for a second, then told us, when you see a rainbow, you close your eyes tight and "pray" - then she kind of elaborated, like "win the lottery" - basically "make a wish."

And after she went away, I said to DH, so praying is the same as making a wish!

Oh and squoze is my favorite made-up word for past-tense of squeeze.

That makes sense. I've always thought that both praying and making a wish are appeals to the random forces of the universe - who aren't listening anyway!

This reminds me of a local church that has on its wall "Happiness is submission to God". Once years ago it was vandalized; someone sprayed on graffiti to make it say "Happiness is submission to Godzilla." Now, the vandalization was not funny of course (and they've long ago cleaned it up so it has ever since been back to the original), but my husband liked the modification so much (he's a Godzilla fan) that he wrote it on a little sign and hung it from his Godzilla action figure.

OMG My DH uses that word all the time! Of course he thinks it is a real word. I once told him that it was squeezed and he just looked at me all wounded, so I quickly said, "No, baby. It's really squoze."

It is, because he wouldn't give us something that he didn't want us to have.

Wait, or is it a gift from the devil? I get those two mixed up.

When I was a little girl I used to try and pray all the time. Then when I got older and realized that all of that praying resulted in nothing I began to equate praying with wishing. I don't really do either anymore. I still blow out candles, but there is never a wish with it.

On the subject of praying, I read a study a year or so ago, designed to find out if praying helped patients in hospital. There was an initial assumption that the prayed-for group (who knew they were being prayed for) would probably do better, just knowing people out there cared, but in fact they did worse. They were subject to more depression, and took significantly longer to recover than the control group. It seems that people knowing they are being prayed for are, in fact, under considerable stress to get better quickly, as they feel they are letting everyone down if they don't. So, prayer is actually counter-productive.

I think prayer only helps the person who is doing the praying. Makes them feel like they're doing SOMETHING. Also, if they are praying for their OWN illness, there is also the placebo effect, which is real and measurable. I wonder why the placebo effect did not kick in for the people who knew they were being prayed for? Maybe the added stress cancelled it out??

Love Wrose's new language! I always thought praying was wishing. I remember coming out of confession and then kneeling in the pew humming some song and getting in trouble for being antsy. Never quite understood what I should be doing.

Thought of you girls while reading "The Gargoyle." I'm halfway thru but the subject is an atheist and was burned in a car accident. He talks about the religious views of being burned and it cracks me up. He basicallys says I was burned because I was high and driving and the car caught on fire due to the gas in the tank.

Hi again,

I know, I suck at posting here. Please forgive me.

I have a question that I guess is tangentially related to this forum.

I came across a poster with a signature and avatar that I find quite offensive.

It actually wasn't religious in nature, it was political. I do find however that on this board the religion often goes hand in hand with the politics.

I'm not thrilled about reading religious signatures, but I generally don't find them overtly offensive.

This particular avatar and signature is overlty negative and I find it offensive. What sort of thing is considered "offensive" here per the TOS other than say, "colourful" language?

Thoughts?

Jennifer, can you send me a PM about it? I might have an idea after my year of modding CE....

Generally though, you can report it and if the mods agree, they'll say something to the poster.

Hi Jennifer,
I also find that religion and right wing politics often go together. I actually find all religious signatures very irritating, and am reluctant to comment on a card posted by someone with a religious signature. I'm afraid I don't know enough of the policies of this forum to know what can be officially objected to, but I support your point of view.

When someone posts in a thread anywhere, and it's just a generic thread not some chat thread where everyone knows you, and they end their post with "blessings" - I dunno, I find it presumptuous, knowing how many people on SCS are not Christian. I don't even mean us, but people with other beliefs who don't use the term. For all the know, the person who started the thread is not a believer, yet still ... blessings.

*shrugs* It's NOT a "big deal" - just a bit presumptuous to me.

*sigh* I've always wanted to visit New Zealand. I think I read a mystery that was set there when I was in my early teens or something. A friend of mine's dad is remarried to a New Zealand woman and lives there. He used to live in Alaska, that's where my friend grew up, but he said it was getting too crowded.

Someone on another board I frequent has this as their siggy:

"Obama is not a brown-skinned anti-war socialist who gives away free healthcare. You're thinking of Jesus." - John Fugelsang

I imagine that would get me into trouble here.

Dunno who John Fugelsang is - off to Google.

Yeah, that's Tigerlily. She's a regular here, too.

Who is John Fugelsang, anyway? I didn't care. I just liked the subversive nature of the quote. I've been looking for an atheist one I'd like to use.

I didn't realise you had that as your siggy too.

I copied it from someone on an entirely different board.

Nice to know who John F is now.

Hi all - after a rather long hiatus from SCS, I finally have a laptop and the internet at home again. I'm glad to see this thread is still around, and though I was mostly a lurker before, I do enjoy reading everyone's comments.

On a side note, I requested The Gargoyle from my library and am looking forward to reading it!
