Default Women in atheism

My atheist group is discussing women in atheism this weekend. Anybody have any links to articles on women in the atheist world? Or have personal experiences? I don't think any of you belong to any local atheist group, do you? I should have already found some things to post on the meet-up page for people to read ahead of time. Going to be googling today but any help would be be appreciated.

Thumbs up Gift Donations in Pence's name

The Freedom from Religion Foundation is suggesting donations in the name of Mike Pence. Then he will receive the acknowledgement of the gift from ffrf. Hopefully he'll get tons!

I think it would be good for Planned Parenthood, LGBTQ organizations, ACLU, Americans United, and the ACLU among others.

Perhaps donations could also be donations in the name of Steve Bannon, Jeff Sessions or just about anyone else including Trump.

Did you hear that Planned Parenthood has already confirmed it's received over 20,000 donations in Mike Pence's name???

PP confirmed it. Google will confirm if you need a link. I was thrilled.

More recent information says 46,000 donations. That's amazing. I wonder if ffrf piggybacked onto what PP was doing. Regardless, anything is good. I suppose the pious xtians will respond with donations to pregnancy centers or something.

Yay! That should make the news! At the very least it is great for PP to have more money.

Wow, I'm happy to see the numbers so high!

Of course now I also am seeing comments about how this proves they don't need govt. money.

*sigh*

But oil companies do.

Default Russell Amendment to Defense Authorization Act .

Xtians are trying to grasp even more. This is from the ffrf

...
The Russell Amendment, a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act, would allow religious exemptions for any organization that has entered into a contract with the federal government. It would authorize any religiously affiliated organization (such as a university or hospital) that receives federal grants and contracts to discriminate against individuals or groups that do not align with its spiritual beliefs. It could have a hugely detrimental impact in the workplace against nonbelievers and religious minorities, as well as members of the LGBTQ community.
The Russell Amendment would endanger nondiscrimination policies currently protecting the vulnerable in the workforce. Under federal law, all U.S. citizens should be guaranteed equal protection under the law. The threat proposed by the Russell Amendment to this foundational principle demonstrates the necessity of a solid wall between state and church.

Ohio has lost all sense and reason. Passing the "heart beat" rule to prevent abortions for any reason except to save the mother's life if there is a heart beat present, which occurs at about the 6th week. Terrible, insensitive, intrusive, dangerous.

Hi, New to the forum, and new to paper crafting, but I've found it hard to find good ideas and inspiration that isn't religiously motivated. I was raised agnostic, and have found myself leaning toward atheism as I get older. Just wanted to drop a line and say hello and nice to see you here!

Hey KaliKitty, welcome.

I was raised Roman Catholic but in my early fifties, started questioning. So kind of a late person to atheism but have been very comfortable with it the last 10 years.

I've found a lot of info here that has given me food for thought.

Welcome KaliKitty! Like Kathy I didn't start questioning until I was about 50. I was happy to find this forum when I found SCS. I was a pretty new Atheist and was somewhat overwhelmed by the overt religiosity. Are you saying that on SCS you're having problems finding inspiration that isn't religious or was that on other sites? Check out the tutorial forum for lots of fun techniques.

Anyway, besides being here there are lots of blogs and websites and books devoted to atheism. I'm guessing you have found some of that but we can give you suggestions if you would like them.

I cringed when I read about that. I suppose it will end up in the Supreme Court. Who knows what happens then! I suppose this could be considered liberal according to Catholic standards where there is not even an exception for the life of the mother.

Ohio passed a ?heartbeat bill? to ban most abortions. It won?t hold up in court. - Vox
This article may give you hope. I didn't read it all but it seemed encouraging.

I read something similar on Slate. It calmed me down somewhat. It is galling how much time gets spent on this stuff instead of more important things like education and employment.

Hi, tigerlily! No. mostly other sources I've found online. I don't have a religious upbringing, so when I see lots of Xmas cards and ornaments being made for the holiday season, I don't really know what to do to give to my in-laws or co-workers that works for me but isn't religious or blatantly non-religious: Festivus, for the rest of us!
I've been trying to stick with seasonal items, acknowledging their beliefs, yet still staying distant from holiday sentiment. I'll do a little digging on the site and galleries to get some ideas for winter cards. Thanks for the feedback!

Ahh, the big holiday!!! I make Christmas cards, but now they are secular. I gave away all my religious stamps and sentiments.

I celebrate a secular Christmas.

My DH is perhaps a Deist. Not one iota religious, never mentions it. Kids were atheists before me, I actually took them to catechism back in the day but it didn't take. I realize I didn't brainwash them properly!

So people get ornaments, trees, anything secular, with Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings. I did keep some Merry Christmas stamps too, and will use that on some cards, for those I know are more religious. I don't mind "Merry Christmas" either. The sentiment itself doesn't have to be religious for me.

Growing up Catholic was very very colorful, and rich with traditions. I do enjoy a lot of them, and even the Christmas music!

I think it already has--from two different states. SC refused to hear it? Yes, a question mark 'cause I'm not sure my memory is correct. By the way, the Ohio statute also covers ectopic pregnancies.

Now Texas is trying to pass a "bury fetal remains" for fetuses aborted or miscarried in a clinic. Oh, if a woman miscarries at home, no funeral is required, but if she miscarries (not just aborts) her fetus at a clinic, she must have the remains buried.

I wonder how they proceed when you miscarry at three months, and all there is, is "Tissue Debris"??

There was no formed baby when I miscarried. What do these people think???

They don't "think."

If you had your miscarriage at home, as I did, there is no requirement for burial of the "remains." In other words, this entire law is set up to make abortions more onerous, not because it is for public health reasons.

Let's say you have a Texas family, who for financial reasons do not want another child but find themselves pregnant, due to those same financial reasons. They decide the only choice is an abortion at one of the few remaining clinics. Now they've taken on the expenses of a long trip, the medical costs and now the state wants to impose burial costs on an already stressed family.

Way to go, you compassionate folks.

On top of that, their "compassion" ends once the child is born. After that, they want you to be on your own.

So, let's see. Deny decent wages. Deny health insurance. Deny BC. Deny abortions. Deny family support.

Excellent family values, eh?

Oops. Got myself started.

Don't you wish you lived in Texas!? haha. Sometimes I get so fed up with the numbskulls who run this state, I could scream. And not only the legislature, we have Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, and Sid Miller. You probably remember ol' Sid, of the name-calling tweet about about Hillary.
I guess governing is no longer about public service.

Wish I wasn't too old to move to Canada.

I see that women in Texas are calling for other women in Texas to send the Governor, in a 4x6 padded envelope, their used tampons, panty liners, and pads, just in case anything there has been fertilized.

Men who want to get involved were directed to um, pleasure themselves (lol) into a baggie and send that. Also used condoms. After all, masturbation kills so many potential babies!

What grand ideas! Love it!

Getting close to 2017 and the inauguration of DT. I try not to think about it because it is so troublesome, yet not thinking is dangerous. What to do?

I am sending happy wishes out to all my friends on SCS - may 2017 bring creative joy and lots of hugs.

Some of the women in Current Events said they'll start a special non-Inauguration Birthday Thread for me, as I have the unfortunate happenstance of having my birthday on Inauguration Day.

I mean, people I didn't vote for have won in my life, many times. But I never felt such an aversion before.

Default ‘Church Militant’ Theology Is Put to New, and Politicized, Use

Interesting article in NYT for you ex-catholics out there but also of general interest

....
A week after Stephen K. Bannon helped engineer the populist revolt that led to Donald J. Trump’s election, Buzzfeed unearthed a recording of him speaking to a Vatican conference of conservative Catholics in 2014.

In his presentation, Mr. Bannon, then the head of the hard-right website Breitbart News and now Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, called on the “church militant” to fight a global war against a “new barbarity” of “Islamic fascism” and international financial elites, with 2,500 years of Western civilization at risk.

While most listeners probably overlooked the term “church militant,” knowledgeable Catholics would have recognized it as a concept deeply embedded in the church’s teaching. Moreover, they would have noticed that Mr. Bannon had taken the term out of context, invoking it in a call for cultural and military conflict rather than for spiritual warfare, particularly within one’s soul, its longstanding connotation.

As the Trump administration prepares to take office, the use of Church Militant theology has gone well beyond its religious meaning and has taken on a political resonance. To fully grasp what “church militant” means in this highly politicized atmosphere, it helps to examine the broader movement and the role of a traditionalist Catholic website called — to no surprise — ChurchMilitant.com.

What hate. I have realized that I grew up in a very liberal Catholic family and church.
