One person quoted 'Character is what you have when no one but god is watching'.

Someone responded: If God is watching SU demos to make sure they are not selling cs by the sheet, S/He must be having a very slow day. (gotta love it!)

The response to that was a rather ominous: God is watching. The consequences come later.

The conversation should have been basic right versus wrong. If you sign an agreement saying you won’t do something, you just don’t do it. But 'god is watching and the consequences come later'? Really? Wow. Apparently some people can't leave god out of anything, including crafting. It's very frustrating. And it's also very frustrating that god can be brought up in almost any thread but I felt I needed to be respectful and keep my religious beliefs (well, lack of) out of a conversation about friggin' card stock so I didn’t comment.

Have any of you seen the Kia commercial w/ the sock monkey and his pals? With the muno doll (the knobby guy) standing up through the sunroof with his arms thrown wide and 'How do ya like me now' blaring? I always think 'wow, that's kinda like gods attitude'. Childish, I know. But I think it every time I see that commercial.
Was this thread in the demos-only section? I swear I hang out at SCS (General Stamping, Tools, Everyday Chitchat, Family, and CE) every day and didn't see any thread like this...

Years ago when my sister was having a new house built, she chose a contractor that touted his business as being christian based. Funny thing was my dad got banned from the construction site because he kept pointing out what wasn’t being done up to code. Humph. Not the first ‘gods law’ over ‘mans law’ that I’ve heard. I went to private christian high school and my teacher always drove at least ten miles over the speed limit. He said he wasn’t bound by ‘mans law’.

Sorry, yes, demos-only section. I'm painfully link challenged but I'll try again - http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/fo...d.php?t=484302

If by some miracle the link works, don't out me! I haven't posted over there in ages and those people will tar and feather me!

I've never posted on CE - I'm too lazy to check facts!

So while some Christians are complaining about feeling persecuted, the non-Christians are keeping their mouths shut so that their cars don't get keyed, or their blogs spammed, or whatever.
I have a co-worker that is an openly professed agnostic. Yet whenever anything good happens, like I find a file she’s been searching for, she’ll literally throw up her hands and proclaim ‘thank you jesus’. ***? I always respond with ‘You’re welcome’. I feel like I’m turning into the mean girl, but I told her I won’t stand for religion being brought into the work place. I hate any sort of confrontation but I will throw down on this issue.

Here’s a funny from my very christian mom …

Mom: What’s in that bag?
Me: Dry cleaning from about a year ago.
Mom: Well, you’ve probably outgrown it.

What would jesus say? Apparently he thinks I'm fat.

Well well well, if you quote a post and hit reply, it won't do it. So I cut and pasted it into quick reply.

Guess they have some issues...

Oh yeah guess he never read that part about rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's, or did he take that literally to ONLY mean pay your taxes?

Wonder if that would go over with a judge - maybe they have all Christian judges in his town....

Happens all the time here in the Bible Belt. Our yellow pages are littered with Jesus fish. And some of us go out of our way not to hire people who feel that they have to use the fish to get business.

I'm "outing" myself in this thread. I read along all the time, but never had the guts to jump in and say that I'm one of you. Glad you're here, ladies!

Ha ha ha, nice to see you! Outed, I love it.

I just read that demo thread. Yeah I didn't post either. But really, isn't character what you have when nobody is watching?

No qualifications. No "I'm good because I'm afraid of hell" or anything.

Just - knowing right from wrong and choosing right. That's character. I don't know if I'd say one has character if they are only doing it because god is watching, which implies a fear of eternal retribution - otherwise why care if god is watching?

I'm totally with you on the Santa thing. There was a woman in a playgroup with me years ago who was very much an "in your face" Christian. She was always trying to use my children's future damnation to bring me to her idea of what I should believe. I finally had enough one day when she told my daughter that she had to behave because "Jesus is watching and might not like what he sees". I accused her of holding Jesus over kids' heads like Santa Claus. Needless to say, the comparison was not a welcome one. I think that might have been the last time she came to our playgroup. It certainly was the last time she tried to "fix" me.

I thought anyone would be able to ‘get in’ through the link. That’s what I meant about not outing me for posting it Sorry you couldn’t see it.

Thanks, Sophie. It's harder some days than others. OTOH, at least I have no one to account to for how much I spend on rubber stamping!

What's really getting on my last nerve lately is how much and how often religion intrudes itself into public life and politics these days. The healthcare debate has been only one recent example; can nothing ever be a settled issue in this country, as long as the Church has a position?

I'm so sorry I missed that you lost your husband. My sympathies.

And you're from MD, love MD. Love MD. Have family in Montgomery Village. They lived in Gaithersburg (sp?) too. Gorgeous area.

Thanks so much for your sympathy. I appreciate it very much, even though the pain isn't nearly as raw now as it was.

Montgomery Village is IN Gaithersburg! It's not far from me, either. One of my favorite sandwich places is near there; ask your relatives if they've ever been to Roy's Place. It's a hoot.

Actually, I'm not FROM Maryland, although I've lived here for more than 30 years. I'm FROM Philadelphia, and I'm one of very few people I know who actually admit to loving Philly. (What I wouldn't give for a cheesesteak, or a real Philly soft pretzel with mustard, or decent pizza . . . ) I'd always sort of assumed I was only here temporarily and would be moving back to Philly any time, but my parents moved to Florida ages ago, and my only brother lives between me and Baltimore (about 35 minutes' drive from my house), and this is my son's home, so I guess I should probably accept that this is my home now, too. Living in the DC suburbs has its advantages, though . . . Did you know that almost all the DC museums and the zoo are free to visitors?

Oh I didn't know about MV in Gaithersburg...I only know their address changed. And I haven't been there in over 17 years. But as a teen it was a pretty fantastic visit...lots of green hills, loved the Smithsonian, was there once when the AIDS quilt was in the Mall...glorious sight to behold.

It looks like I've got some catching up to do since I could not connect to the site at all yesterday.

I am watching Modern Family right now (and it's the first time I've seen it, which I find interesting) and the daughter brings her ex-boyfriend over and in a voice-over, Patricia Heaton talks about why they broke up. The boy is very effeminate (sp?) and they are implying that he is gay. She says that his parents sent him to a religious camp to cure him of his smoking addiction. I'm not doing it justice, but it was very funny in a making-fun-of-evangelicals way.

Also, the holiday episode of Community in December was hilarious. All of the people were of different faiths and the christian woman arranged a party where they all brought examples of their faith. So the Jewish girl brings a menorah and the Christian girl hides it in the Christmas tree right in front of her. So funny.

OMG Barb I just finally watched an episode of that the other night. It's great
but not near as great as Big Bang Theory.

Welcome, Chris. Glad you outed yourself. I often wonder how many there are out there who belong here. I LOVE the Om on your blog!

I agree with the fish thing in the Bible Belt. I know many people who would choose to patronize a business because of the owners' religious affiliation, and not patronize one that differs. I just had a workshop with a church group who found me on the demo locator and I wonder if they would stick with me if I they knew my views. They are planning to start a club so that's cool. The woman who is leading the thing came to my house today to close, and I have two Buddahs and four kanji stepping stones in my garden so we'll see.

An interesting aside...she ordered the asian artistry set and said that she will have to cut Conficious off of the sentiment stamp probably...she'll have to check with the pastor to be sure.

I laugh out loud every time I watch that. I know those people. My DH keeps asking if Sheldon is "queer" and I keep saying, "no, just socially inept." LOVED the speech this week!

I've been youtubing it all day. DH and I finally watched it last night. My chest hurt from laughing so hard.

I would venture SHeldon would be diagnosed aspergers (is that how it's spelled?) IRL.

He looked great in that suit!

Thanks to everyone for the welcome!
I am deeply sorry for your loss. No words of wisdom, just my deepest sympathies.

Me too! I think our sock monkey set is just creepy, but my BFF loves it. I'll take a clown over a sock monkey any day...well I guess it depends on the clown.

So true, and there is a difference between having character and being religious.

Thanks! I love my Om, too.

It took me a long time to be comfortable putting my "spiritual" shelf of books out in the open. They were on my bedroom bookshelf for a long time. I finally moved the big shelf of yoga, zen, buddhist, atheist, etc. right down to the dining room. There is one Bible on the shelf, too, so that probably gets me some tolerance. I've seen people spend quite a bit of time looking at the selection, but nobody has said anything outright.

So I had to go check the stamp set. I thought perhaps it was an image of Confucius that might get axed. But just his name - and from his own quote? I thought Confucius would be a rather benign figure to Christians. I've never heard of Confucius extremists taking on the Church, but maybe I don't read enough.
