I thought maybe she was some very young person but I checked her official page and she's been married 39 years.

*sigh*

I keep on being amazed by some of the things "those" people say.
Silly of me. Wonder why I'm against school vouchers. Don't even like the idea of my tax money going to teach kids some of that stuff. The Texas GOP platform has a plank against the teaching of critical thinking skills. Texas used to be a good state in a lot of ways- headed for the Middle Ages now. Kinda scary.

Yes, it undermines parental authority. Which of course is very important when your 30 year old little boy wants to "think".....

Hang on, my eyes rolled out of my head, I have to find them.....

Welcome to the boards, crrimal!

Very often, people are so busy focussing on what they *Want* to have happen, they don't think about the Unintended consequences of their actions.

not young or uneducated - she is just from louisiana and that's how they are down there. i was born and raised down there and my mom is still there. it is crazy. i didn't even KNOW there were white people who were not catholic until i left the state. as for the schools - hideously bad. and you have two choices - public school where the reading teacher puts the spelling words on the board spelled wrong and tell you that's how you spell it in her class (my 7th grade year) OR you can send your kid to catholic school. and that is why i left the state when my oldest reached school age. what a racist, close minded, self righteous group of people you can find down there. i am SO glad they now have to fund muslim schools too so their plan backfired. i don't think they should be funding ANY religious school.

Oh, absolutely. Look at the Roman church-the monastic system was all about land, money, and power-and still is.

I agree. The masses were originally preached to in Latin, which they did not understand, and from a book they did not have access too. A winning conbination for total control.

Found this cartoon that illustrates why there is more Christian angst about "persecution". I've said it in a post in a CE thread, but this is more concise:

Hi Crys and welcome! This is a great thread for those of us who feel we have to be circumspect about our athiesm/agnosticism in our daily life. It is great to be connected to so many like-minded people.

Oh, this makes me happy:And the Worst Book of History Is ... - NYTimes.com

David Barton, darling of the religious right, who calls himself a historian (but really just has a BA in Religious Education from Oral Roberts Univ ), wrote a book that puts the revision into Christian revisionist history.

Anyway, his book was just voted the worst book of history by contributors to History News Network (hurray!). And he can't claim liberal bias - the second worst was Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States".

Just for fun.

A Minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.

The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.

The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.

The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.

The fourth worm was put into a container of good, clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:

The first worm in alcohol ... Dead.

The second worm in cigarette smoke ... Dead.

The third worm in chocolate syrup ... Dead.

The fourth worm in good, clean soil ... Alive .

So the Minister asked the congregation, "What did you learn from this demonstration?"

Maxine was sitting in the back and quickly raised her hand and said,

"As long as you drink, smoke, and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"

That pretty much ended the service !

Rainsong--received in email.

LOL It's good to hear from you Rainsong!
The worms and jars experiment reminded me of THIS study on alcohol and cigarettes (but no chocolate and dirt):
Peeps, Smoking & Alcohol

Does everyone see the same advertisments that are at the bottom of this page? Just wondering if I was the only one looking at "Click Here! Daily Bible Guide" and "Love the Bible?" haha Thought that was kind of funny

My super computer-literate, facebook-security-enhancing, wikipedia-administrator partner has rendered this forum ad-free for me so I have missed this particularly ironic juxtaposition!

I use Firefox with the AdBlock thing, BUT I enabled ads just for SCS. Just so I could see all the stamp companies' ads. That said, all other ads go in one eye and out the other.

Since I started using Adblock 7 or 8 months ago I haven't seen the ads and I don't think it's in my best interest to unblock SCS, Sophie! LoL

Did anyone catch this article Ex-pastor of Indiana church investigated for sex with teen. I know on this thread we often point out the failings of clergy or religious individuals and I do realize that this immoral behavior occurs in all populations. What grabbed my attention in this article was not the fact that as an adulter, this pastor was a first class hypocrite, but the last statement of the article in which a church member said he would not hold a grudge against the former pastor.

"I know God put him in that position for a reason and what he did is a mistake, and God will forgive him," parishioner Jesus Perez said.

What GOD would be ok with a 54 year old, married pastor having sex with a 16 year old? What REASON could there possible be for GOD to allow that to occur. Could it just be that this man is an adulter with beyond questionable morals? That his god gave him free will to make horrible mistakes and that there is no reason? How can his followers shrug their shoulders and think "Oh well".

Okay, I didn't read the article, but maybe the parishioner meant God put him in the position of being a PASTOR for a reason - and not that God put him in bed with a 16-year-old. Or maybe God was answering the prayers of the pastor.

Rachel, religious people are able to accept a lot. When you think about what they've already accepted, what's one more little thing?

Interesting, I never thought about it. I know people who do volunteer now and then and never thought about their religion. I would expect to see as many Christians as others, perhaps more since there are SO MANY Christians in this country.

Chick-Fil-A is another weird issue. The owner does have a right to give his money to whatever cause he wants. And people who disagree have the right to not go there.

But I have to admit, a lot of the people they interviewed showed me that there are still a lot of Americans who still don't get that marriage equality is a matter of civil rights and has nothing to do with religion. The moment someone says "God" or "The Bible" says what marriage is, I think, yes, that's for one group of religious people.

We have state rights that are being denied to people who lose them simply by their sexual orientation. Separate the civil rights from the religious rites. Let's take away ALL the civil benefits for marriages for EVERYONE. Everyone has to have paperwork to get into the hospital to see their mate. No tax breaks, nothing. Then see how fast things change. A religious rite should not determine one's civil rights.
