Anyone in North California

My husband's work may be moving us from our hometown in Illinois all the way to Chico, CA. I need counseling.

Northern Ca is lovely. Now I don't know anything about the Chico area itself. It's quite different from Il for sure! I grew up in Southern Ca. My Dad lived in San Francisco so I was up there quite a bit. I moved from Ca to Missouri. The weather is soooo much better in Ca. Hope all goes well for you.

Thanks, Sillyfilly. I'm banking on the weather to make up for the double cost of living, LOL. But I'm afraid it sounds gloomy, wet, and extreme in Chico. ??? I went to college in MO on the Mississippi.

I went to Chico State for 5 years, and it is a wonderful family and college town! It has grown a lot since I was there, but it was a great experience. I ended up moving back home to the Bay Area, as I was in my early twenties and wasn't able to support myself quite yet. Also, most of my friends had graduated and moved back home as well. I wouldn't hesitate to raise a family there, but our family is all here, so here is where we remain.

It's really HOT in the summer and really cold over the winter, but without snow. I wouldn't consider it gloomy. The spring and fall weather is awesome! Bidwell Park is a HUGE recreational area near the college campus. Back in the 90s, there was a ton of stuff to do. I'm sure it is still the same.

Thank you, Jodi. I appreciate your info....especially that you didn't consider it gloomy. I can handle hot, cold....no snow is great. We got snow today for the first time this fall/winter. I hate driving in it. The culture and outdoors sound great. Not sure we will be going, but trying to figure out if we'd be willing to if we are presented the opportunity. I like to do my research and be prepared.

The Chico area is the land of many outdoors activities. You have Mt. Shasta nearby, Mt. Lassen Nat'l Park nearby, great fishing in the Sacramento River, Snow skiing in the winter. The coast is a couple hours away, so if the summer heat is oppressive, you can always make a trip over to Eureka and the wonderful cooling fog. The coast itself is a treasure. It's are only a few hours to San Francisco. Hills, mountains, valleys. Take your choice.
