Default Anyone ever donated a car to charity?

Hi,

We are looking to get a new car for my son. One option might be buying one from a friend and then trying to sell his. The thing is, I hate that hassle of having people come over, etc., and that's not always safe. I was thinking of donating it to Wish Upon a Star, where you get the tax deduction. I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar. It looks like your donation is based on what they sell it for. His car Blue Books at $1440 as a trade in or $2200 as a private sale. I am curious if the tax writeoff amount is close to a Bluebook or is it some super low auction price. I know that's not the main point of donating, but we are doing this on a tight budget, so I was curious....

Thanks,

Cindy

Two years ago, I donated my car to this group: Donate Cars for Kids Causes Charity Donate Car Donations

It was very easy. They leave a receipt behind. I suggest taking photos of the car to include with the receipt (our tax woman always suggests this for donated items). I'd suggest _reading the fine print_ on the receipt. Ours requested calling back after X amount of time to get the final value. If you don't call, you can take the "standard" donation (it varies by state) for a vehicle.

It was a nice bump in charitable donations for us. I would do it again.

i'm not sure if i am much help but heres a couple things i thought of:

some high schools will take cars to use in autoshop classes

and some local charities will also take them and auction them off during a fund raiser.

i am not sure exactly how either of those work or all the details, but it may be worth a couple of phone calls.
