Hi Everyone and welcome to the digi challenge this week. I love the look of distressed or vintage scrapbook pages and cards. Bending and tearing cardstock is one of my favorite techniques. It's fun and easy to do it digitally. There are many techniques and we plan to discuss them over the next several challenges. Today, we are starting with distressed edges!
Distressed edges on photographs and digital papers is such a great look. It's just like distressing paper with a piece of sandpaper, but easier. It gives your layouts that nostaligic, vintage and aged kind of look. It can also dress up the edges of a photograph to make it stand out. There are many ways to use this technique and I am anxious to see what everyone creates. I have written a tutorial for creating a distressed edge on photos using photoshop elements 6. You can get your copy HERE. You should be able to adapt the tutorial to fit other photo editing programs as well. If you have any questions about distressing the edges, please let me know.
Your challenge is to create a layout using the distressed edge on your photos and/or papers. You can use any kind of distressed edge so experiment and have fun. There is no limit to the number of photos you use in this challenge.
I have attached a sample layout where I distressed the edges of the rose (photo) to keep the whole layout looking a little distressed.
If you have questions, you can post them here or PM me. (MaggieMayLove)
You can view all submissions for this challenge here: DGC053 Gallery
To add your page to this gallery, just add DGC053 to your keywords. Please also add SBC10JUL in the keywords. This makes it easier for us to search and find your layouts. Oh, and if you would, please take a minute to post a link on this thread so we wont miss seeing your work!
Have a great week! I look forward to seeing your layouts.
Oh, and one more thing -- don't forget to leave a little love for others when they leave love for you. Everyone likes to read comments about their work!! ------------------------------------------- SBC's Information Thread: Everything you need to know to participate!
PLEASE NOTE: A New Digi Challenge will be posted every other Tuesday. Have fun creating a distressed edge and check back on the 27th for our next challenge.
I love this look and I've often wondered how to do this thru PSE. (I haven't ventured into the filters area yet though so this will be good practice). I've downloaded the tutorial but have to go figure weekly timecards so I can do payroll tomorrow at work. Thanks for the challenge!

Work always gets in the way of us having fun, doesn't it? giggle
If you have any questions after you try the tutorial, let me know. It's a fun way to make distressed edges and there is lots of room to play as well.
Do you have this instruction to use in paintshop pro as I have never done anything like this before
Hi Tanjat67,
I am not familar with paint shop pro, hopefully some of the members at splitcoast can give us a hand answering your question. Perhaps a google search will turn up some tutorials that will be helpful. I found this link for creating a distressed photo in paint shop pro.

MN Stamper - I LOVE your layout, the distressing is a perfect touch for the nature theme of your layout. Photos are wonderful. I just love layouts about real life, the things we see and are important to us (plus I LOVE animals)! YOu did such an awesome job on the placement, the distress, the photos! Wow! Thanks so much for joining us in the challenge! We'll have lots more on distressing!

Very nice layouts. I was wondering if they were from MDS and saw that they were when I read your blog. Just out of curiousity (since it didn't say anywhere on the description) what size is this to be? 12x12 or 8x8? You can't tell from looking at the pictures.
Hi Laura,
I have PSE6 and I have followed your instructions to the "T" every time but the masking is not working. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?
One thing I've noticed is that when I put in the adjustment layer, the marching ants on my picture just go away. Is that supposed to happen?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Best,
Denise
I'll PM you and see if we can figure what happened and then we can post it here so that it may help others, too. I can't wait to see the finished project (after we work out the kinks).
I am so enjoying the layouts that are being created and uploaded into the Gallery. I hope everyone will give it a try, don't be shy! We are ALL here to help you and give you encouragement!
Oh oh oh LindyLou50!!! The big image isn't up yet, but I saw the thumbnail and it looks gorgeous, absolutely stunning. I'll keep my eyes open waiting for it to get approved so I can see it bigger! Thanks for playing, this is gorgeous!!!
Turns out, I didn't have that many photos for January left, so the remainder of January could be done in one more spread.
Here is Page 4 and Page 5 to complete January for my 2010 album. Again, THANK YOU for the challenge to get my butt in gear!

Oh, good point! these are 8 1/2 x 11. I find it's easier for me to visualize and organize on that size, since my brain is used to organizing things on a letter paper.

Way to go, Michelle, January is finished! And beautifully so as well. I am so excited you are getting pages complete! Looking forward to more, more and more!
Oh my, Ann, I am so glad you did decide to play in the challenge and post your creations. I get so many wonderful ideas and inspiration from the gallery as I think many of us do. It's nice you will be inspiring us all! I am looking forward to seeing you learn new things and have lots of fun with these challenges. Next one is a week from Tuesday!
That's great, getting 3 challenges in one complete! Yea!!! i think your layout is beautiful, love the colors and the dog, photos really stand out. I'll bet your friend will be thrilled with this! Very nice. I know we are always so critical of our own creations and there are always things we could change if we look at it long enough, but I like what I see and i think you did a brilliant job!
