We had a pretty sunrise too!

Happily exhaused after yesterday. Never made the New Year's fire pit party my kayaking friends invited me to. Neighbors had a party and fireworks started going off early in their yard. Poor Molly was terrified. Just could not leave little trembling doggle with all the noise next door. Sonny could have cared less--for all that he's usually Mr Stress Puppy, he slept right through it. I settled in on the couch with NCIS marathon and woke up at 12:15. Which, oddly, made me really happy--home with my pups, no big deal, ready for what comes next!

Yesterday was the best possible way to welcome the New Year--my canoe marathon racing buddies invited me to paddle with them. So it worked out well that I'd gotten enough sleep to meet them in the morning, in happy shape for for a good workout! In wee rec kayak, I could only keep up at their standard cruising speed for about 1/2 mile and I was plenty proud of that--but we paddled out 4 miles, they eased up a bit and I really pushed it and kept up with them. When we took a break at 4 miles for water and snacks, we agreed that I'd head back and they'd continue up the lake another mile or so before heading back in, which would give them a good 6 mile run at full racing speed. As my friend Charlie said, the wind gave the paddle a whole different character. We had 20-25 mph breeze (haha) most of our time on the water so we were either trying not to get blown sideways across the lake or paddling straight into it a good bit of the paddle (fun when wind was at our backs though!).

Then fish tacos for lunch, home to get the kayak up and roof rack off the car and get all the hoses hooked up to the house disconnected ahead of cold front rolling in, walk a mile with the doggles, and fix mashed potatoes for pot luck supper. I slept like a log last night!

Thank goodness we have today off from work. My brain is still somewhere up on the lake, bobbing over the chop and paddling into the wind...

Happy New Year and Good Morning. Up before the larks at 5.30 to look at Saturn and Mars through DS1s Christmas telescope. It was very windy though. Last night we took in Jupiter. Today DS2 will finish his science fair project ( just has the board to do), I have to shop, then they have to make sure they have everything for school tomorrow!.yip yip yippee, yahoo, Oh, sorry, did I say that aloud!

Silk

This link should take you to the page of silk ribbons to die for...haven't explored the rest of the site, but you can buy grosgrain ribbon by the 50-100 yd spool for very reasonable prices!

My mouth is watering over the silks, though, and I'm not a ribbon person.

I can understand no plastic bags but I had to start getting them again when Molly and I started up our walking routine this spring after STBX left. I actually quit using my nice hippie cloth bags because I could barely keep enough bags around after Sonny's arrival.

It was nice of Target to give out bags! I love their Target dog--the idea of unzipping his head and turning him inside out is very entertaining!

We don't reuse too many of ours; instead we take them back to one of the stores that accepts them for recycling. I like taking them to Martin's because the company that recycles for them turns them into park benches. Then Martin's donates the benches to parks and schools.
Patricia, that's so cool!

You used cloth bags to pick up doggie poop?

I liked Alyson's idea of reusable cloth bags to pop presents into for easy wrapping. But Jane, really - for poop?

Well yes, I know you can buy them. But somehow it goes against my frugal nature to buy plastic bags to put dog poop in. And he sometimes poops 2 or 3 times a day. In fact it is an unusual walk when he does not.

Trace of snow and cold outside. I put my long underwear on under my sweatpants to walk the dog.

Find I am sleeping about an hour later, consistently.

Only 6 days off? Yikes!!!

I hope you have fun with your folks! I'm doing delayed Christmas with my family too, on Martin Luther King weekend. Aside from loving the weekend to begin with, it means a lot to me that it's become a special family celebration. Dr King spoke so much about love and hope. I love that his birthday has become part of our time together as a family.

They want to "teach people that they are valuable" - um yeah I already know that. I can get a nickel off my grocery order when I take them back in to reuse, at least in my city, where we haven't banned them - yet. (The whole county is considering it.)

I reuse them in all my waste baskets at home. I have been dumping them into the large kitchen bag the last week. Today I measured all the baskets so I know what size liner to get. Just did that, in fact. And, we use them for dog poop.

Yeah I already know they are valuable. I really hate when govt. sticks its nose this far into my life. Ron Paul has the right idea - just takes it a little too far in some areas, in my opinion. I do chuckle when I read that Ron Paul has the support of everyone who wants drugs to be legal. ha ha ha
Oddly this reminds me of the cell phone issue. The people who don't dispose of the bags responsibly are now going to ruin things for the folks who do with plastic bags now, too. That really, really sucks. It's just NOT that hard to dispose of bags properly or to recycle them. Pretty much everyone HAS to go buy groceries. I just want to punch people who litter sometimes.

Secondly, they're made from petroleum. Do we really need to spend our energy source to produce something so unnecessary?

Let's see, we buy a chicken on a plastic tray lined with a plastic backed moisture absorbent liner then wrapped in plastic wrap. The chicken is then placed in a plastic bag at the register, possibly two! We then take the chicken home, discard the tray, absorbent liner, the plastic wrap and toss the bag--all into another plastic bag--which we then discard into a plastic garbage can.

Stepping down off soapbox.

Rainsong--The Paper Bag Lady (Okay, "lady" is up for debate!)
Totally agree with you on this. That's why I went to cloth bags years ago, and keep a stash of tupperware bowls for leftovers so I don't have to keep re-wrapping things.

I do have sympathy for folks who don't want the government telling them what to do, though--it's a tough balance on a lot of issues. Although the people who DON'T exercise their freedom responsibly give up the moral high ground when people work for a legislative solution to the problems their lack of responsibility creates. To paraphrase James Madison, what is government but the admission that men are not angels? For if we were angels, we'd need no government. Sigh... (well the sigh is not from Madison).

Well, I think I might go to the park district and walk on their indoor track. Too cold outside and I need some exercise.

I went and exercised! Yea for me!

Then I stopped at Aldi's and picked up some frozen ground turkey and a cheap bag of rice. Gotta pamper Shadow's tummy the next few days.

Oh. LOL

The ones at the park are small and thin so must be incredibly cheap. I'm wondering if we'll end up having to get some. I'm not sure there are enough bags here. And my city doesn't have a ban yet but I don't shop at my grocery store much these days. We live so close to the city with the ban....

Yea for exercise Marge!

I should but I'm not sure if I will get out today. I had a horrible night trying to sleep. I got up at noon and would say I maybe got 4 hours sleep.

His birthday frequently impacts my birthday but not this year. But next year, yeah. There will be no mail on my birthday or the day after (Sunday/Monday). So people who don't get cards out in time to arrive Sat. means I won't get them til Tuesday. LOL Like that's a big deal.

It's probably a bigger deal for kids who have their birthdays near holidays. Hmm, maybe we should push for that uniform calendar.....

DH appears to have gone into work, I know he slept til after 10 and it's officially a holiday but eh, he does this a lot. He obviously was not kept awake by his own snoring..... it wasn't even loud. It was just oddly annoying and irregular. I'm sure the cold had something to do with it.

The couch wasn't very good for sleeping and the guest bed is still covered with Christmas stuff. Guess I should work on that today huh.

To add insult to injury, the county schools' central office was off work today.

Quite a few teachers were NOT impressed.

I understood what you meant the first time, but I also understood Marge's confusion!

I came down and thought I'd missed most of it, and it hadn't started yet!
We heard them talking about that while we had the Rose Parade on.
