My family made a cake in the shape of the number 8 for my niece's birthday yesterday. Ha ha ha Yep her 8th birthday.

Hi. FInally eating lunch. Nothing really sounded good but then as Jacob and I were leaving to get Zach my neighbor brought over a bag of day olds from Starbucks so I'm having a ham and swiss panini.

That sounds good. When Steve was at college, his room-mate's buddy's mother worked at Panera. He always used to go back to school after break laden down with day-old goodies.

She's the one with the twins, yes? Won't they be catching up to her in age pretty soon?

I've been meaning to ask you - now that Steve is back home, is he still doing some cooking to keep his skillz intact?

No, this is the older one. Her son is two today. So technically both were born the day after Feb. 28th, there just wasn't a Feb. 29th his year.

It'll take him a little longer to catch up. I just counted, they can share their 10th birthday. Sort of. LOL

Jane, have you ever heard of the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA?

We will stop there on the way back. I've been dying to see it since I first read about it!

So I was looking up some of the big Silicon Valley addresses in case MO wants to drive by Facebook or Apple HQ (on Infinite Loop) or Google.

So V, do you want to do the zoo on Friday and Mt. Diablo on Saturday?

Anything we might have to contend with on that Saturday, being St. Pat's Day?

Doesn't look like Danville has anything.

Hey V, are you going to do another PC fund raiser this spring? I was just looking at the new stuff.

Love the new round covered baker, multi scraper and new ice cream scoop. Not sure about the bamboo sink caddy.

How is everybody in here? I never caught the vicious thing that was hanging out at home and Sister is finally starting to feel better. Took her to ER on Sunday and they gave her different meds. EXCELLENT news, Carol. On all fronts.

So the GOP are probably happy gas is high but not happy the DOW is up.
Just at the moment I'm feeling lucky to live on the state line and be able to fill up where premium's still under $4.

My next car will NOT have a turbo. Obviously even with mileage dropping to about 20 and premium up this high, I'm still better off with no car payment, and once engine's rebuilt the mileage will go back up into mid 20s (low compression on one cylinder). But I'm still saving up for used Mini.

Although in all honesty I could get a new Ford Fiesta for the price of a used Mini--they get butt-kicking mileage, too, rented one on trip to parents and they're pretty fun to drive. Could easily be modded up to autocross and would be way less expensive to maintain and a really fun car for tooling around, good safety ratings, decent room in the back for taking pup to dog park. It's probably a more rational decision.

Fortunately it will be a while before I have to decide, knock wood.

I guess you never know.

It's so weird that someone in that great shape would die so early. I feel so bad for his family I'd still rather take my chances on trying to stay in shape, though. I figure it's a no-lose situation because it just feels so good to have that endurance to push through on a long paddle, or that exhilaration of just breathing in the air and stretching your legs on a good hike through the woods. Even if you can't live forever, I figure why not enjoy the ol' bod while you're here. Sounds like he really did that with a lot of discipline.

It's been a very rough week. STBX called Weds morning. A very dear friend of ours died Tuesday night. It was self inflicted. He about lived at our house on weekends when he first got out of high school, and STBX got him started in career working on cars. We both loved him so much. His daughter's about 4. His parents are absolutely distraught and we are too. It's just a terrible, absolutely heartbreaking situation.

Weds BIL's sister, who my niece absolutely adores, had a heart attack. She started improving yesterday, thank Heaven but it's pretty serious. BIL will probably fly home to see her even although their other sister says not to come, it's not serious. Um, what part of loving someone isn't serious? Grrrr. My sister's pretty upset that BIL's other sister won't just be gracious about his wanting to be there.

Yesterday my wonderful manager's equally wonderful manager got the big Corporate thank-you. One of the last of the old-school, knows what he's doing, cares about doing it right, cares about the people doing the work managers. We're lucky--the new mgr we'll report to is one of the folks I worked with when they lent me out to another dept last year and he's very much another brilliant, dedicated and hugely decent human, so we totally lucked out there. And mgr who got laid off, given his experience and current regulatory environment, is in a very strong position to do well consulting. Just lots of uncertainty at work right now.

I am very glad to know vacation starts next week.

I can give you uncertainty of the weather. Today 63, Sunday 78, Monday 82, next Thursday 70. Friday and the weekend isn't up yet. I'll keep checking and let you know. DS1 has his Odyssey of the Mind competition tomorrow - we leave school at 7.30 and hope to be home around 6pm. Looooong day. We will be around on Sunday as we're cleaning the carpets! So I hope we get a chance to chat very soon. So excited.

Ditto, ditto

Love you dearly, Carol, but please don't come here with pink eye...it's really contagious, right?

Kind of crazy here. Madly deep cleaning the house for our visitors. Not that it's dirty by any stretch of the imagination but my in-laws have NEVER visited us here so I want it to be perfect. And, of course, for a certain Otter too.

They decided to "warn" the instructor who was getting complaints, and let him teach the next session and monitor the feedback closely. So they didn't actually fire him.

Wow on all counts. Hope everything works out.

And enjoy vacation - I am jealous!!

But I think it is for the best that Leona had to cancel the San Francisco train trip. Not only was she in a money bind, but this siding project has had lots of major ripple effect to my wallet.

New Andersen storm door $350 (incl installn)
New Andersen 8 ft sliding glass door $3200 (incl installn)
Take brick steps apart in back patio $150
Pay someone to put brick steps back together $450
Black metal trellis to replace old wooden one (so it matches new metal front fences) $150

Oh and I forgot, pay painter to paint the wood & new surround trim on the sliding glass door to match, and as long as he was here, paint all the trim in the house to freshen it $300

So I guess it boils down to, I better spend my vacation in my unexpectedly pricey courtyard this summer.

Wine and cheese on the patio, anyone?

Could a "potion" be like a witches brew and take a bottle of some fancy liqueur and make a cool label for it with a full moon and a witch or something, and a cute little poem? Tie ribbons around the bottle's neck - that sort of thing?
