I've just finished my filing cabinet. I decided on using transfer foils and Shiva Paintstiks. I applied the stik straight onto the cabinet and then rubbed it in with my fingers and hands. Oh that was fun! Then I did some stencilling over the top. Now I'll just leave it out for 24hrs to cure before I bring it inside and put my paper work in it.

So how about a picture while it is out there drying in the light?

"I wanna see NOW!" she says whilst stamping her feet.

Well that looks a whole lot less like a reject from the 80s discount store and a whole lot more interesting.

Do the Shiva Sticks show up more IRL? I can barely see the colour. Just a touch of red on the top left and some shimmer on the handles. I love the way you use colour.

I like the way the foil transfers go around the edges of the cabinet.

Hello Kat,

Yes I am lurking around the place. I was just in the kitchen putting together a potato bake for dinner. We have been eating very late these days.

What you can't see from the photos is the metalic sheen of the paintstiks. It really gives it a lovely warm glow. The cabinet cost $10 and I used whatever I had on hand in my stash.

Before Christmas my mother got a 40% off if you spent $100 at Spotlight. She asked me if there was anything I wanted to add to her cart and I said a big jar of Mod Podge. That Mog Podge came in very handy today, and at 40% off it was also economical.

The foil transfers are very hard to see and are just random touches. In the attached photo you can see a tiny bit of hot pink, and a bit of the copper in the upper right. It just catches the edges of the wrinkles. The photo also shows how I drew the paintstik colour onto the edge and rubbed part of it in.

The front of the cabinet was stencilled with paintstiks, over the top of paintstik that I had rubbed on earlier.

Edit - Oops forgot to add attachment.

The cabinet looks fabulous; it is hard to see the colours unless you get fairly close up. I love them, and since I have some, I can imagine the real glory of that. It is very nice how you have done it...

Came across a recipe today to make your own modge podge, but it sounds a bit suss to me so I am going to look around a bit if I find info I will share it on here....

I was hoping to do some stam[ping with the paintstiks, as they say you can use them for this, but my test barely left an impression. I'll have to do more research on that technique.

Thanks ladies for your lovely comments. This is the third piece of furniture I've done since Christmas. It's all a learning experience, with my second piece turning out less than I'd hoped for. That just means I get to repaint it and have another go at it These will get blogged about in the next couple of months.

Theresa, that is what is so great about altering furniture, you can repaint or strip and start over!!

Karen I have homemade something very similar to Modge Podge with flour and water on stove with other ingredients..... I would have to find my recipe. It is fine for paper mache, for using in art journals, for using as a glue, but the sealing qualities are not the same as the real thing. But it is a heap cheaper!! I would be interested in seeing what you come up with and your opinion of it.

That's more like the kind of blending I imagined.

So what I thought was foil was stencilled. I think I could like playing with Shivas.

Dear Lord,
Please grant me the serenity to buy the stash I need, the strength to avoid buying more things I don't need, and the wisdom to know the difference

Hey Theresa, I have never tried stamping although I did dry embossing with them, and I really loved the effect and outcome. If I was to stamp, I think I would be using a sponge brush dunked in a drop of oil, dabbed on the shiva stick till the paint was enough for what I wanted and then paint it onto the stamp.

Shiva paintstix are made without the oil or with not as much oil, so I think that using the oil would encourage it to blend sufficiently to get a good stamp. Some sort of veg oil, linseed being the best, although it is a bit expensive. Being me, I would fiddle with sunflower oil because besides olive oil it is all I use/have. Olive oil is miles tooooo heavy.

When I have used the shivas on the plastic embossing plates, they have left an oily residue which I have washed off with soapy water, so I imagine it would wash out of the sponge brush like that. I may fiddle with this over the next couple of days (assuming I remember - lol) ....

I sent a message off to Cedar Canyon for info on stamping with Paintstiks. The only info I can find relates more to rubbings of the image, not the stamping of it. I'll let you know what they tell me. Your idea makes sense.

I've just seen Tim Holtz's latest gadget. Stamp To Cut with the Eclips electronic cutter. LOVE IT!! I imagined I wanted one of these a few years ago. I remember going into Photo Continental and asking them if there was a electronic cutter that would cut out a stamped image, easily. They didn't get what I was on about, but now TH has teamed up with Sizzix and created a system that'll do what I've been wanting. I'm so happy! If there is only one thing I get this year it'll be this.

My prediction is that in due time SU! will be coming up with cartriges to match their stamps too, since they partner with Sizzix too.

Oh yeah, I think Tim's stamp to cut and an eclips I would be a completely different cardmaker...lol. I could see uses for it beyond cards and scrapping, however. I will wait till the end of Feb and contact the TH supplier I know here in Oz and see what they are coming up with. Prices will probably be the killer for me ATM...

Well I have come across a couple of websites now that have offered make it yourself modge podge or decoupage glue; they say 50/50 elmers glue and water. Well I think elmers is just a PVA glue, and if you use PVA glue, it mixes with warm water better than cold and you can actually dilute it down 75%water and 25% glue - we used to do this at Kindy over 25 years ago when my youngest (now 30) was at kindy. It was considered better and cleaner than Clag and at that dilution was more economical. Anyhow, just putting that out there.

Having said all that, my favourite medium for it is Gel Medium from Derivan - but you all know my preference for Derivan products, anyhow.

I was already thinking beyond cardmaking. I just called my mum and said I was going to forget all about the MM Slice, as this was more to what I'd find useful. Having said that I won't be getting anything for a long long long while. I've got surgery on my ears to do and I just found out last week that my car has a very very expensive gearbox makeover due.

I was at the pub last Friday and got talking with a chap I'd seen out on a couple of road jobs. He told me there was a 50K job that they were having trouble finding someone to do and would I be interested. As good as the money sounds I'm not convinced it's the 'right' job for me. But it'd certainly pay my bills a lot quicker, lol. Still thinking about it tho . just need to make a few phone calls for opinions.

I didn't think to use my gel medium on furniture. I set the filing cabinet out in the sun today to cure it faster. This morning it was still 'wet', but now I can touch it without leaving colour on my fingers. It inside now and I'm putting my papers in it. I'd like to add a clear glass top to it coz I'd like to put a doiley on the top. For now it has my carzy horse on it.

I wrote d-o-i-l-e-y not dolly, lol. But I do have fabric art dolls that I have made. The one you see hanging on the wall above the horse is one that I have purchased from a craft market. I could have made it myself, but I like to share the love and support a fellow crafter. besides I know how much work goes into making them and at $25 it was a bargain.

Speaking of supporting a creater, I made my first Etsy purchase. A small unframed watercolour by a young student artist. I think she is about 17, and she is into scrapping and art journalling,...... and altering furniture, LOL. Thats how come I happened upon her site. Googled 'altering furniture'.

Hmmm....Stamp to Cut. Yay! Something I don't want.

I can do those things with my Klic N Kut by scanning the stamp shape. I can use pens and embossing tools too. And I can print and cut digi stamps as well.

I'm a happy camper when I already have the power.

But for someone less into designing on the computer, I think the Eclipse is a great machine. When I bought mine, the sillouhette was my other consideration and the eclipse looks to be an improvement on that.

Theresa, if your cabinet is still damp, are you sure your horse won't stick to the top and damage it?

Hate to see all the work get ruined.

No it's dry enough for the horse. Shiva Paintstiks are more or less a 'dry' paint to start with. The paint won't lift off so much as transfer off. Can touch it now and not have a smear of colour on my fingers.

I don't know much about electronic cutters. I thought the designing flexability came with software like SCAL and MTC, and not the actually machine as such. There's a lot I'd like to find out about how it all works before I buy anything. I asked a demonstrator to show me if their nachine could do the things you mentioned, but he just wanted to talked about something else, so I assumed it couldn't.

Design flexibility is definitely in the software. A machine with cartridges can't keep up if you are able to do your own designs. But, it has the ability to be independent of the computer.

The pens and embossing tools are just attached with adaptors.

The KNK is an old design of a small commercial sign cutter I think. Their latest offering is the Zing which takes up less room but the software would probably be the same.

Anyway, I am happy to be able to draw on the new TH ideas without having to buy anything.

Good to hear you can adapt the idea for what you already have. Gives me lots to think about.

Yes now that I re-read it that is exactly what you wrote...lol. Just shows how obsessed I am. More I look at that cabinet more I like it.

A friend of mine's dog died this morning from snake bite, she has no children, so the dog was pretty special. Been trying to make a sympathy type card, and be blowed if I can get colours to match or anything. Have to use one I already made. Sigh...

She'll appreciate the giving no matter the card you use. It'd be a big loss for her to lose the dog.

Oh that is so sad Karen hugs to your friend but its so nice of you to make a card for her. Too many people discount how painful it is to loose a beloved pet.

Sorry ladies but I need to have a bit of a rant/whinge.

Do you ever get the impression no one appreciates your cards? I'm very hurt by the attitude of two women I considered very good friends.

I sent the attached card to two different friends, one in the UK and one here in Australia. Let's Party...It's your Birthday by SydneyDeb - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

After 3 weeks I chased them both up to see if they'd received it, the comments were "Oh yer sorry, I've just been far too busy to say thanks!" and "Nice, where did you get it". - I damn well MADE IT!!!!! I wanted to yell at her.

To say I was rather hurt and disapointed by their replies is an understatement. OK maybe I should harden up but this was off two women I considered friends, I'm not sure I'll take the time or effort in making either a card again.

To get a comment like those really makes me wonder why I bother

The only thing that keeps me doing the cards is that first and foremost I do them for MY enjoyment.

I'd be just as upset if I didn't hear from people after sending them a store bought card. And I notice it is the same people who fail to respond in both situations.

I think this is one of the reasons I prefer to scrapbook in many ways.

This following responce it just my perspective on the whole cardmaking/ card giving activity.

First off let me say you made a lovely card.

Second, you got lots of lovley comments about your card from fellow cardmakers. Don't forget that

Third, if you've made your card with love and kindness, then you need to let it go when you send it. Your part is done.

Remember, not everyone understands the time and effort that goes into making a card, and without understanding there does seem to be a lack of appreciation. I'm sure I'm guilty of lack of appreciation for an effort that someone made for me on many occassions becasue I just didn't 'get it'. I've sent cards to fellow card makers and SCSers and didn't get an acknowledgment from them, so it would seem the non-responces are spread across several groups.

If you love what you do, and sending a card gives you a sense of satisfaction, I'd say that is a positive, and it's worth the effort. Don't let what seems to be a negative over-ride the positive. From my own personal experience, no one was more hurtful about what I created than the scrapbook shop owner in this town when I first came here. She would say the most discouraging things about me personally, and my stamping hobby to her customers, behind my back of course. I wasn't going to stop what I do and I wasn't going to change to suit her.

Having said all that, I understand why you'd feel hurt and disappointed. You'd be in very good company as there are many who would feel like this also.

I like your comment about 'letting go' of the card when you send it.

That is what I try to do too, although sometimes you put so much effort into making something especially for a person that you do feel disappointed when they don't notice. I often wonder if I've "missed the mark" IYKWIM.

I don't show my work very often (as you have no doubt noticed), because it is really for me. My scrapbooks are a way of doing crafts I enjoy to create a legacy for my family.

As for the lady in the LSS, more fool her. I wouldn't have bought there on principle if I heard her talking down her customers. In fact, I have an aquaintance who is a CM consultant and I avoid buying from her because I feel she has insufficient respect for alternative views. I expect she lost a fair amount of business from you too - and with the range of things you have a go at, that would be quite a loss.
