Wading for the Mayan end

So far, so good...

although I don't know if the Oral B banner ad with Italian words is a sign of some sort.

Stampin Wrose 12-31-2011 10:50 PM

LOL I haven't had a banner ad in a long long time. DS put AdBlock on my computer. :)

Happy New Year!!!

jmscoping 01-01-2012 04:24 AM

Happy new year!!!!
Gorgeous first sunrise for 2012! Hope that's a sign for many more to come!!!

Rainsong 01-01-2012 04:54 AM

Happy New Year, y'all.

And for those who LOVE ribbon--a present!
Silk

This link should take you to the page of silk ribbons to die for...haven't explored the rest of the site, but you can buy grosgrain ribbon by the 50-100 yd spool for very reasonable prices!

My mouth is watering over the silks, though, and I'm not a ribbon person.

Happy new year!!! I'm off to celebrate with a good day of paddling... LOL. I'll let you know if we encounter any beavers.

Illinois Marge 01-01-2012 08:17 AM

Rainsong, the hand dyed silk ribbons are gorgeous!

Illinois Marge 01-01-2012 08:18 AM

I was up 2 lbs at WW this morning. That was for the 2 holiday weeks as they weren't open Christmas Day to weigh in. :-(

I just gotta reverse this gaining trend.

Illinois Marge 01-01-2012 09:34 AM

Shadow has diarrhea. I've had him out 3 times already today, before noon.

Weather has turned - from mild December to cold and windy January.

The potluck crowd (mostly my walking group) is expect in 1.5 hours --

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 11:09 AM

Uh oh on Shadow, Marge. Did you give him anything? Poor puppy. Not a good thing when company is coming, either!!!

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 11:10 AM

DD worked at 6:30 - 11, said it was very quiet and also boring because her job involves getting product out and - well - today's a holiday so there were no trucks. LOL

They were giving out free fold up reusable bags, though, with purchase. It's the Target dog and when you unzip his head and turn him inside out, there's a nice big reusable bag. The bag ban begins in that city today. No more plastic bags. *sigh*

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 11:14 AM

Saw a trailer for a movie coming out soon - Haywire.
IMDb - Haywire (2011)

All I got out of it was that Ewan MacGregor and Antonio Banderas are both in it.

*drool*

There are a bunch of other hunky younger guys, that I don't really know, and Michael Douglas.... Something for everyone. HAHAHA

I've ordered twine and ribbon from them in the past. I don't have their silk ribbon, though.

OMG - I want one!!! :D That sounds adorable!!! I didn't hear anything about them out here.

One of the Target stores here had some really nice fold up bags a few years ago. They have a reinforced bottom that splits in the middle so it can fold. I still have two of them. One got ruined when a bottle of cooking oil turned over on the way home and leaked out the top. :( But I haven't seen them in a long time.

PH in VA 01-01-2012 11:56 AM

I hope Marge's potluck is going well and that Shadow is feeling better.

I hope Jane is enjoying her paddling.

It is pretty cute! I'm tempted to go shopping just to get one! ;)

I guess they'll be selling them after today. I don't prefer to fold my bags up, but I was thinking this might be good to keep in my purse for when I do forget to take them in, but then I don't like to bulk up my purse. I think what I'll do is just tell them to put everything into the cart and when I get to the car, I can unload the stuff into my own bags. Eventually I'll start remembering them. I also need to measure my wastebaskets and see what size liner I need to buy.

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 11:58 AM

How was your holiday, PH?

PH in VA 01-01-2012 12:05 PM

I guess the plastic bag ban is a bummer if you reuse a lot of them.

We don't reuse too many of ours; instead we take them back to one of the stores that accepts them for recycling. I like taking them to Martin's because the company that recycles for them turns them into park benches. Then Martin's donates the benches to parks and schools.

PH in VA 01-01-2012 12:11 PM

We've had a pretty good holiday break. It just seemed short since the kids had only 6 days off of school and go back tomorrow.

DH has tomorrow off, and then he's taking time off on Friday for an eye doctor's appointment, so it'll be a short work week for him.

We'll be heading down to Mom and Dad's in a few weekends to finish up Christmas with my sisters. I guess I ought to go ahead and wrap the gifts we're giving them. LOL

They keep mentioning "litter" as a reason and I'm thinking oh are we going to ban everything that contributes to litter now? *rolls eyes*

They want to "teach people that they are valuable" - um yeah I already know that. I can get a nickel off my grocery order when I take them back in to reuse, at least in my city, where we haven't banned them - yet. (The whole county is considering it.)

I reuse them in all my waste baskets at home. I have been dumping them into the large kitchen bag the last week. Today I measured all the baskets so I know what size liner to get. Just did that, in fact. And, we use them for dog poop.

Yeah I already know they are valuable. I really hate when govt. sticks its nose this far into my life. Ron Paul has the right idea - just takes it a little too far in some areas, in my opinion. I do chuckle when I read that Ron Paul has the support of everyone who wants drugs to be legal. ha ha ha

Dang I need to pull off all the old calendars! I already have the new ones up on the hooks underneath. Had to, as we have some dental appts. coming up this month. :)

I think you know I hate plastic bags (and most things plastic) so I'll give you two good reasons:

Litter--and yes, they are a bigger problem than most other forms because they get wrapped around so many things. Mufflers (way to really stink up your car's interior), animals legs, trees and shrubs, car antennae, etc. Because they are light-weight, the tend to be lofted by the wind right into the middle of roads or windshields (quite dangerous) plus they end up in bodies of water where they interfere with the lives of a wide variety of critters.

Secondly, they're made from petroleum. Do we really need to spend our energy source to produce something so unnecessary?

Let's see, we buy a chicken on a plastic tray lined with a plastic backed moisture absorbent liner then wrapped in plastic wrap. The chicken is then placed in a plastic bag at the register, possibly two! We then take the chicken home, discard the tray, absorbent liner, the plastic wrap and toss the bag--all into another plastic bag--which we then discard into a plastic garbage can.

Stepping down off soapbox.

Rainsong--The Paper Bag Lady (Okay, "lady" is up for debate!)

stampinbb 01-01-2012 01:41 PM

I hope everyone has a fantastic 2012!

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 03:37 PM

I hear ya, Rainsong. And we live so close to San Francisco Bay, that I know they get into the water. So they're very motivated in this area. I just feel like I'm being punished because other humans are irresponsible.

My Costco chicken breasts are no longer packaged so wasterfully, each two breasts are in a plastic packet and they're all attached by perforations, and they don't bag anything. So that's not too bad.

Plastic bags are also recyclable, but of course people don't bother. *rolls eyes*

It's merely an inconvenience for me.

Stampin Wrose 01-01-2012 06:42 PM

Today is the day we designated at Phantom's birthday. We just knew he was "about ten months old" when we got him that early November day in 1996.

So he's 16 years old now. :)

Wow.

What would I use to pick up dog poop if there was a ban on plastic grocery bags here?

He had nothing out of the ordinary (that I know of).

He had an accident downstairs while the company was here :-(

Illinois Marge 01-01-2012 06:52 PM

Weather has turned bitterly cold. Ugh

Illinois Marge 01-01-2012 06:53 PM

Anyway potluck went nicely, 2 people were quite late and the others wanted to wait for them. So everyone just left a half hour ago.

PH in VA 01-01-2012 07:17 PM

Rainsong - no debate from me on the plastic bags! I agree with you.

Although I will say that when I buy chicken (or any other raw meat), I do prefer to put it in the store's plastic bags than in one of my reusable bags, just in case any of the raw meat juices leak out.

I can see Wrose's and Marge's side of the issue too though - the plastic bags do come in handy if you have something that needs to be disposed of easily (i.e. dog poop) and it's nice not having to spend money on something for that (like the way Wrose uses them to line her trash cans).

I guess my opinion on them is torn between Rainsong's point of using petroleum for better uses, and Wrose's feelings of being punished because of other people being irresponsible.

Happy birthday, Phantom!

I'm glad the potluck went well, Marge.

Our weather is supposed to be turning colder over the next day or two, too.

PH in VA 01-01-2012 07:27 PM

Well, I'd better get to bed. The kids go back to school tomorrow so that means the 6:15 alarm will sound again. DH has the day off of work, so I have one more day to wait to get my house to myself again. (Assuming I don't get called to sub... oh Murphy, please don't enact your Law, I'd like a day to myself first! LOL)

Take care, Pondies.

You can buy them. I know our local park has a dispenser attached to a post and it is always filled with little bags.

And apparently pet stores sell them:
