Oh, it was fun. The kids all got that gift that was super important to them this year. So they were happy. I made 2 quilts for my boys but said they were for cousins. And they were delighted and surprised when they opened them and found they were for themselves! (I had given one to DD last Christmas.)

Has anyone made a sock monkey before? Tips? Pointers? Where to buy the socks??

Would that require SEWING? LOL!! Nope, have never made one. I don't know what kind of socks you would use.....maybe baseball ones (they are LOOOONG) which can be found in most places like Sports Chalet

Just went and looked at DS's CLEAN baseball socks....just a red stripe down the side, no red heel!!
Sewing has NEVER been my thing. That is one "craft" I just couldn't get into. Now, doing stitching/embroidery type stuff was ok, but I didn't stick with it long and have forgotten what little I did know!

Have this next week of working again. Then (crossing my fingers) I should have a bit of a break!! SOOOO looking forward to that!!

I've never made one, so don't know where you could buy them. Not sure if any big chain stores like target or walmart would have them. Just google 'red heel socks' & you will probably find a bunch of places on line.

The rest of the story is that DD and finished watching Mr. Magoriums' Magical Emporium tonight. And she decides she wants a sock monkey. I offer to sew one for her...and she pouts...and wants one from a store. I explained that originally, they were sewn by moms and grandmoms...but of course...that didn't help me any. I guess I'll make one and she can watch me give it away to someone else! hahaha

Oh, make one & offer to give it to her, but also give her the option of saving her own money to purchase one.

haha...she is a horder of everything! And so picky with what she spends her money on. That is a great idea. And I know she would opt to "save her money" instead! haha

Maybe she could help make it, and then she could save it to give to her kids and start a whole new family tradition

yeah...I tried that too..

but...today's news..SHE WANTS MOM TO MAKE her one. No she is not going to buy one and no she is not going to help! Well, that's a girl for you!

Meanwhile, I can report that we have been watchign FOUR deer in our backyard. Yeah, we see them regularly through out the year but it is always fun to see them again! I remember one December a few years back when my youngest thought that they were reindeer! And of course, I whole heartedly agreed!

Hey Girls!! Any big plans to ring in the NewYear?
I've been working 9+ hour days and right now the thought of staying up that late is SOOO not appealing!! LOL! I think we are going to go to a friend's house to play some games...he lives just down the road so don't really have to worry too much about being on the roads. My guess is that DH and I will bail LOONG before the clock strikes midnight in CA....but hey!! I can honestly say that it will be midnight back east!! LOL

Hey, Starla,

No great plans for me. I just never did enjoy partying and crowds. I will probably make chili and then stamp or something. DH gets into watching the ball drop, but hey, I'm always up that late, so no big deal for me. DD is probably going to some party. DS probably will be on the puter playing internet games with his buddies.

I think the x-box/wii games are on the agenda for our little group...which means I'll probably just sit and watch as I'm TERRIBLE at those games. Guess I should grab the couple of group party games that we do have and maybe we'll play a couple of those.

Tomorrow is my last day of work for a couple of weeks. I am so tired at night that I have no motivation to stamp or do anything else (like clean up my house, do laundry...you know, the basics!!) Hoping that I will be motivated to clean up the Christmas decorations this weekend. And I need to stamp!! I have a couple of ideas but no energy to mess with the mess of trying them out!

Well, the inlaws have left and I am putting the hoiuse back together...laundry...the regular stuff. I need a bunch of cards done asap...haha...

But as for ringing in the new year, we are going to be down the street at the house of some friends' as well. Food, fun, friends....and yes, lots of kids. haha.

Since I am in the East, I'll wish you a Happy New Year when our clocks chime!! Is it weird to watch Times Square count down 3 hours before CA hits midnight? Do they replay it at midnight Pacific time? Do you ever feel "behind" b/c you are later than the east...or do you feel like we go to bed a lot earlier? haha

The countdown is delayed viewing here....so it is at midnight Pacific time....not that I've seen it in the last couple of years! LOL

I am EXHAUSTED and don't know if I can make it to midnight this year. Today was my shortest day at work at just under 6 hours. The rest of this week has been 9(+) hour days. I need to go do some much needed laundry and I think that a nap is in order. I'm so glad that I will get some time off!!

Well, I got one load into the dryer. The rest can wait. I tried to take a nap but kept hearing DH and the boys dying of laughter as DH bought/introduced the boys to the Three Stoodges (is that how that is spelled?!)

Yeah...about a year ago, we were at the home of an older couple and the gentleman showed the kids those movies with Alfalfa...Of course I can't remember the name of that series now.

And my kids howled with laughter!

Just back from our party....it's nearly 1am...Starla...are you sleeping? It's only 10 pm over there!

Happy new year, ladies. I crashed last night before 11:00. Just couldn't keep my eyes open. So I told DH I was going to bed and "Don't yell up the stairs at midnight!" He would have and I would not have been happy.

Of course, going to bed early means I'm up early this morning. duh!

HAPPY NEW YEAR GIRLS!! Are you ready for this?! We stayed up till 1:00am!! YIKES!! Some of the adults (my two boys were the only kids) had never played on the Wii so my kiddos were the Wii hosts and got the adults playing Guitar Hero (HILARIOUS!!), the balance and yoga games and then golf and tennis! There is some priceless video out there now! LOL
We also played this disgusting (but funny) game of "Puffy Bunny". You have to see how many marshmellows you can put into your mouth, but you have to say "puffy bunny" for each one to make it count.
Oldest and DH just left to go paintballing. Youngest (who managed to stay up too (without whining/breaking down!) is tired today and decided to stay home and just chill. Now I need to get to that laundry and some card making!!

Our Christmas decos usually stay up for at least another couple of weeks. When DH gets tired of them is usually when he'll take down the tree. OK by me.

I pretty much don't do that anymore now that the kids are grown.

Are you talking about sewing as in clothes? or home decor? or quilting?

oh any of the above really! I just want to expand some hobbies. Maybe more project like things. Or if you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.

Well, there are certainly a ton of free instructions/tutorials on line. I follow at least one quilting blog, (http://quiltville.blogspot.com/) but she doesn't really give step by step instructions, except if she's doing something like a mystery quilt. I didn't really check that out as she was posting the parts, but I'm assuming it caters to someone with at least some experience.

I've taught beginning quilting, from uncut fabric to finished quilt and geared to someone completely new to the craft, so I could certainly try to answer any questions you have with that. Start with something small like a table runner or pieced wall hanging or a doll blanket. You can be sure that there are quilters in your area -- ask at school, church, your friends and neighbors -- or check for a guild on line if you wanted to visit a meeting... most allow you to visit once or twice without paying dues. Although, you will probably not get step by step teaching unless you happen to find someone willing to help you. Quilt shops have classes, but again -- most do not cater to beginners (even though they might say that) in a class situation. Unfortunately, I find that sad, because they miss out on someone's potential that way.

If you wanted to make a bag, or a pillow, there are many tutorials available. Look for something geared for beginners.

If you want to make clothes, I'm not the person to ask. I did make a lot of clothes for my kids when they were small, but I used knits mostly, which are very flexible and forgiving size wise.

Of course, there are books available for anything, but why spend the money if you can find it free on line.

I assume you already have a sewing machine and know a few basics???

I should....but that would require me to find some place to store them in the OFF season!! hehe
I do have some fall stuff (that I always forget to put out)...but no other seasons besides Christmas. Maybe I need to find a small seasonal tree of some sort to decorate

Good for you!! Sewing is SO not my thing but I am hoping to try some other artistic endevors this year (working with metal is one of those things....like TenSeconds Studio does)....maybe get out my old paints and give that a whirl too (not on the huge mural scale that seems all I do lately...canvas)

BUT!! None of that will happen today!! got called into work at 6:00 am.....so, my day will be spent trying to come up with creative ways to make people rehab!! snort

oh yeah...a tree that you can change the decorations sounds delightful!

I just met a couple whose MIL/FIL have a large frankenstein like monster...or perhaps it is more of a vampire. Anyway..it's full size, holds a candy bowl. And then after halloween, they change out the clothes adn little decorations and update him for whatever season or holiday is at hand. I'd take a tree over a monster.

Thanks for the suggestions melody!

Cut a few branches from the lilac bush or tree out in the yard & put them in a tall heavy vase.
