Q. What do you call a conversation that is not about elephants?

A. Irrelephant.

Irrelephant!!!!

I LOVE it!!! Please thank YDS for me. Tee hee!

It's been a crazy week. We're getting settled in our new building. It's corporate HQ, so full of teeny women in Ann Taylor wardrobes with perfect hair and dudes in suits and ties. We don't have cubes any more, just desks, so I feel like a giant free range chicken sitting out in the open. Can you tell I miss my old window cube with its nice walls?

It's a very weird atmosphere--a cross between a funeral home (with no walls, everyone on the floor is very quiet) and Grand Central Station (you have to walk through our area to get through the exec offices so lots of bigwigs walking up and down the aisle next to our desks having very LOUD conversations because we're all basically furniture). I finally brought my iPod in and I'm dealing by listening to the Grateful Dead and John Denver all day while I solve problems for the Man.

Oh, and still wearing clogs to work. Sorry, but if I'm in khaki slacks, a silk shirt, and nice silver jewelry, the Ann Taylor crew can suck it. I'm not loving it but I still like the part where going in every day enables me to continue living indoors and buy kibble for everyone so I'll deal.

Wrose, I hope you're feeling better, or at least that Gibbs + cute Brit cheered you up.

(((HUGS))) Bo. I'll listen to some more Dead and solve another prob or two for the man if it cheers you up.

V, I can't wait to see how the cake turns out!

PH, tell YDS to keep the jokes coming! That made my day!

PH tell him I groaned. Which is better than ignoring it, which is what we did to my mom.

Any recommendations on coffee makers? This was a cheap one and has lasted about 30 years. Drip. Cone cup. Basic. No programming, no thermal carafe, no pause to sneak a cup before it's done.

So I brought up all my molds from the basement and my dining room table is covered.

But it lasted 30 years! Too many fancy features and they break easier. About the only feature I need (besides brew) is the pause.

I'm a bad person to ask. I still have my vintage Mr Coffee from when I moved here in 1989. I was all jazzed when I bought it because it had a feature where you could set it up the night before and it would brew coffee while you were sleeping and you could wake up to nice hot cup of fresh java.

OfficeMax is booming and hiring at HQ like crazy. Running out of room. Some departments are getting kicked out of HQ to a satellite building in Itasca. Glad its not us, there would go my 5 minute commute.

We are also moving to another floor in April, co-located with development. Open floor plan so we collaborate more and be more speedy. The expert told us at recent all-hands meeting that noise volume actually drops in open layout. I didn't believe him but based on what you say, there might be some truth to it.

It's ok. I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's just freaking me out, man...

Seriously, I've spent the last 17-18 years working on various campuses outside of downtown where they exiled all the business and technical analysts and straight-up tech folks. I think I've been business casual since 1997 or so. It's interesting to me because it really is a different culture--it's all the people who analyze problems, fix things and design improvements. So it's a lot of people who care very profoundly about getting things done right but for the most part could give a hoot about image and I guess it's a line of work that attracts a lot of irreverent smart-arses. I guess kind of a work hard, joke hard environment.

So it's just been a big culture shock to start working in this skyscraper full of people who walk through yacking as loud as they want because I think we really don't register in their minds any more than a bank of elevators, and who are clearly very image oriented and much more formal. Plus when they moved us out, there wasn't space in the new area for all of us to sit together. I sit next to my manager (actually right in front of him--I was typing him an e-mail yesterday and he IM'd me 'I see you're typing up an e-mail to me,' if that gives you any idea of normal operating procedure, LOL), but we've gone from being able to walk down to someone's cube to show them something to having to book a conference room so we don't disturb the folks from the other area.

It's kind of fascinating because it's so different but it's also really weird when you're used to a much more informal, git-r-done atmosphere.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes--and look forward to hearing how it works out on your end! It would be pretty quiet for us if we could gag the visiting bigwigs, LOL. I love sitting close to people I work with--I think it does help a lot when you're trying to solve complex problems. Even with a screen share there's no substitute for seeing someone's expression when they get it--or aren't quite there yet. My manager's big on communicating ideas through pictures so if I couldn't sit there and doodle things out on a white board with him it would probably take us a lot longer to sort out some of the really intricate stuff we need to put together.

I just like having enough of a cube wall that now and then I can just go back to my little den and be left alone to think and work. Oh--that and pin up pictures from trips.

Ex-MIL had one with a carafe that kept coffee piping hot and the pause feature. If I ever had to replace Mr Coffee I'd probably look for something like that. I agree with you on all the features though. Simple stuff seems to last longer.

MO, DS1 saw your avatar and got excited. Then asked if we were going to visit you on the grand tour! He was even more excited when I said yes.

You see they decided on the Monopoly by voting? The iron is out, the cat is in.

I knew the cat would win.

I had to read that twice. I was like Lebonese? huh?

Yeah sorry but it's not a big deal out in these here hippie parts lol.

Altho I guess it's good that they are not portrayed as the sexual pervs that people (some) still see them as and simply as people who want a home.

I don't even recall what I voted for so I suppose I can't have a feeling either way about this. But cat? really? Maybe as a frenemy to the scottie?

Tomorrow I'm hoping to get cookies AND two 14x14 cakes baked. Then Friday morning I could frost and cover the cake and it can be done. I have still a lot of cleaning to do and of course have to work tonight and tomorrow night

Yeah sorry but it's not a big deal out in these here hippie parts lol.

Altho I guess it's good that they are not portrayed as the sexual pervs that people (some) still see them as and simply as people who want a home.
I don't think I've ever seen a lesbian couple featured on any tv show before. So I think it's super that they are being shown at all, and in a positive light too.

Yeah I don't even have the pause. That's the top of the list and probably the easiest. I think they all do that these days.

I could easily give up programmable, although it's nice to think some days it might get me up earlier, knowing coffee was brewing!

Thermal carafe is an extra, but would be nice.

I do prefer the cone paper filters, and have them already.

You know, it broke once in Florida, so over 15 years ago. DH offered to take a look at it. Took it apart, studied it, said he had no idea, put it back together, and it's still going. Well it is, except for the draining part. lol

LOL Exactly.

The fact that scouting won't allow adults in either (as homosexuals) shows their lack of knowledge, in thinking homosexuals are pervs. Sure wish they'd change but right now they've got the Mormon church breathing down their necks. The Mormons basically see scouting as "their" outdoor experience for their youth and support it as such. I'm sure scouting doesn't want to lose that money.

That's what I think, all the cat people had to get their noses in. lol
