Marge, I'm glad your sister found a new coat that she likes.

And 30 minutes is nothing for a drive to decent shopping opportunities. Just sayin'.

ODS and I saw Les Miserables this evening.

I'd never seen any production of it before, and I've never read the book, so I don't have that perspective for saying whether the movie was done well or poorly.

I knew it was a musical, but I didn't expect 99.75% of the dialogue to be sung.

After seeing and hearing "I Dreamed a Dream" in the context of the story, the lyrics make a lot more sense to me now.

I thought they gave Amanda Seyfried a lot of dog notes in her songs. I like her voice better in a lower register - like in Mamma Mia.

I kept waiting for Sacha Baron Cohen to say/sing "Monsieur Bobby". LOL

I don't think the short hair is flattering on Anne Hathaway.

I read that the girl who played Eponine beat out Taylor Swift for the part. Thank goodness.

Russell Crowe's singing isn't quite as bad as Pierce Brosnan's. LOL All the ledge scenes started getting to me.

And not related to the movie itself - this was the first time I've ever seen the movie theatre owner speak to the audience before the movie started. He greeted everyone with a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", and politely asked people to move toward the center so that latecomers could more easily find seats at the ends of the aisles instead of crawling over people. He said there was nothing interesting or surprising at the end of the credits, so there was no real need to stay and watch all of them. LOL And he joked about how everyone should speed home afterwards to give the police officers some chasing work to do.

Lol. Oh we have some of those too. we don't do woodworking but of guns..... We have a lot of guns.... Lol. Our backup system in the early years was effective if not inefficient. We have 3 copies of every picture between 1999 and 2005....

Today I had the NCIS marathon on while DH was at work; the rest of the day was some football, some news, and still more NCIS. lol While we did other stuff.

We did hear the VT lost. (One of my friends back east has a son going there.) GT plays New Year's Eve - Monday - at 11 on TV.

Yeah apparently 71 teams qualified for the 70 bowl slots, 35 bowl games. We bumped somebody who had a better record. Something about our standing and schedule, but I understand why that school is not happy. Glad I can't be blamed for the decision. Yeah, we're playing a bowl game at 7-6. We lost all (?) our games after being given a bowl. lol We got to play in the division championship game, I think. But I don't think we were that good. Just weirdness.

But whatever. We'll be up and watching! DH said there's supposed to be work and he plans to go in at some point.

No plans for tomorrow except more putting stuff away.

I'm not exactly sure what it is I like about Skeet Ulrich but I've always found him very attractive.

Some kind of animal magnetism. ha ha ha

We share the same birthday! Except I'm a teeny bit *cough cough* older than him....

Um, no. VT beat Rutgers in overtime, 13-10. However, I will admit that the way VT played, they should have lost. They had the first possession in OT and scored the field goal, and that was their first lead of the game.

When they showed the brass section of the Marching Virginians, we found one of our high school graduates playing his trumpet. We never saw the piccolos so we didn't see our former drum major.

I hadn't heard about the bowl game bumping fiasco you described. VT didn't have such a good record this year either.

Is the GT game at 11:00 your time? Because if it's 11:00 my time, that would be pretty darn early for you.

I remember reading War and Peace a long time ago. It was a very good book. But after the ending, I felt disappointed. I felt like the ending was, "la la la la Life Goes On."
The ending involved a geological event and a long-term business relationship and friendship between two of the characters. It just felt like a very impersonal way to end the book after 1000-plus pages of insight into how dealing with that extreme and challenging an environment affected people over millennia. There's so much that's awesome in the book and seemed to bring a lot of the human spirit--both greedy and noble, and sometimes both--to life. Then it just kind of went 'fthhpthhh' and stopped. At least that's how it came across. I don't know. Maybe someone else would see it differently.

Holy cow. Coming into the Country is blowing me away all over again. Actually if someone who's never read McPhee wants to read a shorter and absolutely beautiful meditation on our choices in the 20th century, read Encounters with the Archruid. Beautiful book about McPhee visiting amazing places with David Bower, who got kicked out of the Sierra Club in the late 60s for being too strong an environmentalist, and 3 different developers, from a dam builder who saw the difference water could make in the West to the fellow who developed Hilton Head Island in SC. It's such a vivid and delicate portrait of the balance between idealism, technology, the hope of what we might achieve, including prosperity and a decent life, and the call to care for what's beyond money and profit, and the hope that we might leave the world better than we found it.

I'm realizing just how much I've learned from reading McPhee over the years.

It's weird because the other book I read that hit me that hard was Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop. That book totally made me understand the richness and challenges of Catholicism and plain human decency confronting human failings, large and small. It's one of the most quietly, richly beautiful books I've ever read. Also Cather's descriptions of New Mexico's landscape are kind of the literary equivalent of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings of the desert there. I guess Willa Cather made me want to go to New Mexico the same way John McPhee made me want to see Alaska and both of them were still absolutely right decades after the books came out.

I have several friends who think I only like books with an Archsomebody in the title.

After living in California and Florida for all of one's life, I imagine any place snowy and cold would be a pretty strange and different world--especially landing there for good in December!

I guess I've always thought Ohio was part of the midwest, but maybe that's an East-coast misconception?

I have to admit I've been known to do that once digital came along. My Mom always said the best way to improve your photography is to take pics of same thing framed a bit differently, at different angles for exposures. Then when you get the pics back, you can see what you did that worked well and make an effort to do more of it.

Usually when I get back from a trip I edit them down and just put the strongest shots in a gallery, then delete the real duds. But I do keep a lot of the middling pics that aren't bad enough to delete. Not quite sure why I do that. All told I took about 1200 pics in AK, probably 3-400 in Tucson and a couple of hundred in CA/OR (the weather discouraged the lots-of-different-angles approach, that plus the freezing blustery wind and 37F sleet on the far side of the Golden Gate). I got March trip edited down to a couple of hundred pics but still need to weed AK pics down from about 700.

Part of the prob with AK pics was that in Homer on our last day there, this storm came rolling over Kachemak Bay and the light and clouds changed so dramatically over about 20 min that I took 60-70 pics from the same spot down on the Homer Spit, and every last one of them is different and most are some of the most dramatic, stunning pictures I've taken ever. Not out of being that great a photographer, just from standing in front of something so powerfully and amazingly beautiful that a chimp with an instamatic could have taken photos that would have made Ansel Adams weep.

It's so sweet of her to donate the old one. I imagine this time of year, it will find a good home, although I guess that will be one more place for you to drive. Sigh... Glad she found one she likes, though! Somehow something you use that frequently always seems like such a nice way to keep the warmth of a good trip with you.

after i do that then i'll go back and start culling them for scrapping.

with all of our old storage systems - i've also noticed htat we have 3 and 4 copies of the same pictures. i would download the camera and then dh would download the camera... and then he'd make a copy to give to someone and all 3 sets would end up on teh harddrive....
Having 4 sets of the same 900 pictures would drive me through the roof. Seriously. I'd be picking asphalt shingles out of my hair.

That was the year ex had his one and only traditional Jewish Christmas dinner of chinese takeout in NY... I was contracting that year but they VERY kindly told me if I'd take the laptop, no worries go take care of your Dad, so we drove up. I guess that was 8 years ago--I'd just gotten wagony that spring. We took Dad out on a trip through the city to all his old favorite spots from where he used to work to Brooklyn Bridge--the last time he really got out and drove around. It worked out but I have to admit it didn't do much for my desire EVER to rely on an airline again around a holiday.

Marge, I'm VERY glad your sister was able to rebook.

I saw Star Trek in the theater because I wanted to see the special effects. DD goes to see a movie she likes, more than once. She paid to see The Hobbit on opening night at an IMAX theater, including waiting in line for hours. She plans to see it again.

My reason for not seeing LOTR in theaters was simply that I didn't want to be that close to the ugly parts. There's a lot of fighting. Oh and more fighting. And then another war. And then some creatures climbing a mountain.

But yeah it's like sports. As long as there are enough people to support it, to pony up the big bucks, then the pros will continue to make as much money as movie stars.
Ex LOVED going to the movies--we went all the time! I have to admit I miss seeing as many movies in the theatre. It's harder to work out with girlfriends (and guy friends) all over town. The one friend I have who will go a lot always turns it into extravaganza with 27 of his closest friends and I'm not always in the mood for that. I like going and then having a good conversation about it without having to talk over a table of 20 people.

Before my friend got his contracting gig out in CA, he and I would do movie night at the house every month or so and that was fun too but now he's off making oodles of money out west for a few months.

That's something I'll try to do more next year!

I'm up 4lbs since Thanksgiving. The funny thing is I stayed the same over Thanksgiving week, then gained the whole 4lbs in Dec.

Down one since Christmas, though.

I'm not making New Year's resolutions this year. I'm making goals for December 2013. One of them is make it into the 160s by 31 Dec 13. I figure that's 16 lbs in a year which I think is do-able.

I'm renewing the 10 miles a week of exercise, eat fruit and salad/veggies every day goal. Made it most months, missed exercise by the most in cold weather months. I guess I need to get on that elliptical machine more in bad weather.

Number one goal is keep working hard and number two is get my savings back up and stay away from credit cards for ANYthing this year. I have enough clogs, cute JJill stuff and nice practical kayaking stuff that I won't have to worry about going naked for a few decades. Good thing about Dec 13 Alaska plans is that I don't have to finalize anything till Sept, and I'll take enough out of tax refund to cover the 4-state jubilee trip . So--if year goes well, I'll manage 2 trips again this year, if not, I'll go back to Alaska another year.

Final goal is to clean out the house this year. I've made a good dent this fall, and hope to keep going. So--5 goals. Manageable number of manageable things.

Off to start on goal 5 by taking final load of the year off to Goodwill and getting receipt for this year's tax deduction

My friend Debbie's gotten really into consignment shops and found a great one near my house. I started an account the day we went down there, so next up I'll prowl the closet for a few more things that might sell there. I have some nice Kenneth Cole & other inexpensive earrings that didn't sell last time I put them up, so I'll take them down there, then start ironing shirts that don't fit any more. I have some really nice cotton blouses I've been moving from house to house since the 80s. While I spent a long time hoping I might wear a size 12 shirt again one day, after 30 years I'm thinking it's time to admit defeat and, with any luck, make a few bucks in the process.

Oh dear! I think I must have misheard something. Sorry about that!

Definitely 11 a.m. our time. So far the earliest we've had to get up for a game was one that started at noon. We had to get up for 9 a.m. I like that my google calendar shows them in my time zone. Yes, I have subscribed to the calendars of the Braves, and GT (football and basketball).

Oh sounds like another "la la la la life goes on" ending. *sigh*

No.... and my progressives are close to $400 (then they take off 150 (I think) for the insurance coverage). Costco seems to have way cheaper frames, I don't know why I need "designer" frames. I also have a prescription for a new pair. Can't say I've been thrilled with the place at Kaiser, so might try Costco first. I would prefer something this time with clip on sunglasses or whatever. I hate switching pairs, and I esp. hate paying that for two pairs. Last time, I got my sunglasses "distance only" so they were way cheap but with the screen in my new car, it's hard to focus on that when I have the sunglasses on. You know, if I want to change music while at a light or something. Sigh. Pain in the neck.

Hmmm, I should make some goals like that....... I've never been into New Year's resolutions either, just something to forget about.
