Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. - Albert Einstein
Dh got a decent bonus and it's just a treat for us. I'm sure it's frivolous but for less than $100 they come right here and I cook them fresh. Not something we do more than, oh, every five years lol

You'll miss him for sure -- but the goal of all the good parenting that you and your DH did was to raise them as independent adults. So you should feel proud.
On the subject of things i get obsessed with, I finally finished Michener's Alaska novel. All 1089 pages with really teeny print. The end was not what I expected. Really great job on the history though, based on everything else I've read or saw on the trip.
When I wrote my senior thesis on frontier development, my advisor made me read Coming into the Country, absolutely awesome book about Alaska by John McPhee, author I passionately love. I went on to read almost all of McPhee's books. So I picked up Coming into the Country again to re-read it at 51 as opposed to 18--I guess I'll see if my English teacher's point about books being very different when you read them at different ages holds for nonfiction as well as fiction. I guess I'm not ready to stop reading about Alaska yet.
That book just hit me so hard when I read it in college--it was written in 1976, so pretty recent when I first inhaled it. It will be interesting to read about Anchorage and the bush areas of the state from a point of view of having been there 36 years later. I actually bought a big trade paperback copy of the book when I worked for a bookstore here about 18 years ago because my old mass market paperback from college was so chewed up and falling apart by then so it will be nice to read a book that doesn't have teeny print this time.
Although I can still read even the teeny print without reading glasses, a cause of annual profound irritation to my opthamologist. I guess that's a good thing since one of the things I love most about living on my own is curling up on the sofa with a good book and Molly's nose on my shoulder.
I read Hawaii, Chesapeake, Space and Texas by him. They took forever to read but so well written that I couldn't put them down.
We had spaghetti tonight. I couldn't stand the sight of any more leftover ham....
We had spaghetti bolognaise last night as we couldn't face a third day of turkey. We got Christmas lunch, turkey sandwiches with trimmings on Boxing Day for lunch then turkey quesadillas for dinner! Still enough in the freezer for two more meals plus 3 separate stocks frozen, too.
Sister just got a call / message from Delta. Her flight tomorrow is canceled, presumably due to storms pout east.
I was looking forward to Sunday being a "down" day before I go back to work Monday. Looks like her visit will be extended....She needs to call them and see when she can rebook.
At least they told her before she arrived at the airport.
Lobsters under virtually any circumstances FTW!!!! LOL!
Have any of them (besides the ones V ordered) made it out west yet? Speaking of which, I just went out to get the mail and your gorgeous card arrived!!!! It was so much fun reading about the Oregon run in your letter! You were very kind to leave out the part where I kept you up all night snoring.
Mine arrived today. Just about to read the letter - it's been a busy day here.
So I shelled pounds of nuts so they eaten quicker! Juiced the last of the lemons, I think I got almost 2 gallons of juice in various stages of freezing for use over the year. I also made lemon curd and kept a couple to make a foot scrub for later.
DS1 worked on the display board for his science fair project and DS2 got his experiment running. He wants to see how quickly he can ripen a green banana. Last week people around here were complaining that the bananas were green, this week I had to go to 3 grocery shops to find suitably green bananas! Suggested he label them to make it easier to identify them at the end. We now have: Bob Banana - control in the fridge, fruit bowl Fred, hanging Herbert, dark warm place Pete, paper bag Bill and plastic bag Buddy.
YDS needs to start working on his science project soon. He's planning to see which spice/spice type thing will melt ice the fastest - salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, garlic powder, etc.

Jane, you said the ending of the book was not what you expected. Was it a good ending?
I remember reading War and Peace a long time ago. It was a very good book. But after the ending, I felt disappointed. I felt like the ending was, "la la la la Life Goes On."

I mean, nobody gets their roads cinnamon'd..... lol
Although if it's something really more expensive and salt does okay that's another possibility.
And that's why these kids do this!
Both boys love taking ice from the freezer and putting salt on to melt it. I don't know that they've tried anything else. Great idea for another project!

Yeah, I know the salt stands a good chance of melting the ice the most quickly. But wouldn't it be interesting if, say, the heat of the cayenne pepper works more quickly than salt?

So you think Tolstoy may have inspired the Beatles?

Exactly! If it were, you would wonder if maybe there's another reason they wouldn't use pepper. Might make people sneeze or get in their eyes! Maybe salt is NOT the fastest but has the least side effects or is just the cheapest!

Pippin LOVES to get an ice cube from the dispenser and chase it around, he pounces on it, it skitters away, he pounces off... it's pretty fun to watch.
DH asked what we're going to do for entertainment when he's gone and I said, "get a Roomba!" Ha ha ha ha ha

It really does. All that I have left to do is finish unmounting my stamp sets. I have about 30 more to take off blocks and then I have probably 100 sets that need to be trimmed nod sprayed with adhesive.... I did the unmounting in stages. It was just soooo overwhelming to get them all done.
I need to order a few more DVD cases so that I can get them all stored. That is on ,y list of things to do today.

I saw that. I didn't like Amanda seyfried In it. I like her but I don't know how she got that part... She's not a singer.... And thought they could have picked a better actor than the red head...
Jackson and Crowe did a good job. Ann did too but I wasn't all gaga over her part. I don't think it was as amazing as the Oscar people are saying .
I liked it and thought it was well done. (Except for when Ann sang I dreamed a dream). She did a beautiful job on it. I had no idea she had such a good voice... But the close-up was toooooooo close-up and all I could do was look at her teeth....
I'd probably give it 7 stars as opposed to your dd's 4 though... My girls loved it
They did need an intermission though. Good grief! I love the longer movie. It's like I'm fianally getting what I paid for but my bladder is too small for tht! Lol.

Well you should have a lobster in your future. Unlike V's it will not be part of a miniature punk rock trio playing Rock the Clawsbah.

Haven't read Chesapeake or Texas but I LOVED Space. My all time favorite Michener was The Fires of Spring--just a heartrendingly moving and beautiful book.
I couldn't get through Poland, though--neither could my Mom or sister, despite our desperately loving both Michener and anything to do with Polish history. Maybe I should try again but given a choice between finishing Poland and watching paint dry I would have gone over and stared at the wall. Alaska was awesome though!!!
