As a traveler, Midway is much smaller than O'Hare and easy to navigate around. Baggage claim is very slow there though.

As a driver, I have to take 3 different xpress-ways and always be checking the map. The last few miles are driving through a not so nice neighborhood. From the driving aspect, I prefer O'Hare. As a traveler, Midway is less overwhelming.

He's got almost a 2.5 hour layover there, so hopefully his baggage will make it.

So the first article I read in this morning's news is the passing of Charles Durning. He died yesterday at his home.

Loved him in Best Little *****house in Texas, but my favorite role of his was as Cpl. Ernie Yost on NCIS. When he dances with Kate and sings Begin the Beguine, I cry every dang time.

Just read an article--he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

"Too many bad memories," he told an interviewer in 1997. "I don't want you to see me crying."

Mmmm lemon squares... you're invited here for Christmas next year if you're in the neighborhood!

I'm making a ham (bro's company sends out spiral cut Omaha Steaks hams every year and I've somehow made the list!), my Mom's mashed potatoes with carmelized vidalia onion strands and sour cream, broccoli with breadcrumb topping, home made cranberry sauce and my grandmother's made-from-scratch jelly roll for dessert.

Debbie and John are bringing rolls and collies (the collies don't go in the oven, though). DEX stopped by to pick up Molly for Christmas last night but Molly whimpered so much that he decided to leave her here with all of us. That was very sweet.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you and warm and fuzzy wishes!

You take so much in stride and keep your sense of humor about it. I imagine they must be quite the bunch of total pills to make you that upset. Good luck V. On the bright side, we'll all be here so you can share the stories after they leave.

(OK that was not a peaceful Christmas thought... but under the circumstances I can about imagine that God would want to hear the stories too).

I have to admit I would seriously have named the refrigerator Hieronymous by now... although maybe not as that wouldn't exactly make me want to open the door and see what's inside.

I'll keep that in mind when booking tickets! I've been through O'Hare enough that I'm pretty sure I could find my way out of it in one piece.

Marge, I did have one thought: Do you get Columbus or Veteran's day off, and would those be good times to travel? Would Labor Day be better?

I figured if we could piggyback on a mutual holiday, we could each save a vacation day--although I imagine by Veteran's day the weather might not be as mild as it is here. We still kayak well into November in shirtsleeves if not tanks and shorts.

Be safe driving.

There was a little snow on the sides of the interstate on top the mountain last night when we came home. The roads had been treated and were clear.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Presents are opened, just relaxing to Christmas music with our coffee till the ham goes in the oven. We did not go overboard on the presents this year. I like it better that way. Leona and family don't arrive till 3pm, we plan to eat around 4pm.

Will be walking Shadow shortly. Nice day so far, very little stress. Will set the table etc after we eat lunch on the 'old' tablecloth....

Hey if I cave and go to Fargo, can I make your bro's company list too, LOL?

I bought a Paula Deen spiral ham this year. At least double the price of the other store brands. Better darn well be worth it.

Early summer (June) will work better for me than fall. The 4Q at work is horrendously busy.

Don't get either Columbus day or Veteran's day off. And I need to avoid 4Q (it's a retail company). Labor Day would be better if you want to piggyback on a long weekend.

Southwest only flies in to Midway, so if you can get a better price on the flight, don't worry about which airport. The time driving is the same. And after I take Ruth back, I'll have had practice....
