Glad to hear you're enjoying the time with them! Hello to all the Ds! (DH, ODS, YDS).

Whew, caught up!

Not much news here. WFH tomorrow and for the rest of the week, although I might go in Weds-Thurs since some of the stuff I have to work on is easier to do on double monitors I have in the office. It's nice to have a quiet week to catch up on things after end-of-year madness. All the business partners I'm working with are off next week so it will be a good time to catch up on several small filler tasks I have that never quite got filled--the urgent stuff kept bumping it out of the way.

Finally went to the Dr this past week. Turned out the headache and stuffy head I'd had since the week after Thanksgiving was a fairly massive sinus infection. Antibiotics rock sometimes. I've gotten my Christmas dinner shopping done--I'm cooking Tues which I look forward to--friends and dogs coming over. Won't see the family till next month so I'll still have a couple of things to get, but Mom, sister and niece's presents will be the two scrapbooks of Mom's childhood and family tree I've been working on, so at least I've bought all the components. Just have to get something for stepdad and BIL before I head North again.

Have a good evening everyone! E you tomorrow...

The d/w is getting things clean, which is important. It's very quiet. I take awhile loading it, or reloading it, as it fills, through the day, playing with where to put things. You know how it is, you have to figure out where your particular dishes, bowls, glasses and mugs fit the best in a new machine.

I just have to make almond roca cookies, mop the kitchen, wrap presents, and make cauliflower cheese soup for dinner, so a leisurely day for me
The only thing which went by the wayside today was my celery soup. DH opened me a tin of French onion which tasted excellent with fresh bread and sausage rolls. We then went looking at lights and drove a distance to see the dancing lights which one of the guys in DHs squadron does. He moved since last year but we found them. I do feel for the neighbours! Sausage roll recipe coming up Alyson.

Sausage rolls recipe for Alyson

8 oz Ruff Puff pastry as follows: 8 oz self raising flour
1/2 tsp salt
5 oz lard/margarine
between 3 and 5 fl oz cold water

Mix flour and salt and add fat cut into small pieces.
Stir with a knife ( do not rub in)
Mix into a stiff paste with cold water
Turn onto a floured worktop and roll into a narrow strip; fold into three, turn one of the open ends towards you and roll out again. Do this three times in all
Leave pastry to rest for about 15 minutes. If hot, allow pastry to rest for 20-30 minutes in the fridge.

So take your 8 oz ruff puff and 8 oz sausage meat.

Roll pastry into a long strip 3 inches wide - I divide mine into 2 then roll, makes for easier handling.
Roll the sausage meat with floured hands into a suasage as long as the pastry strip, place on the edge of the pastry.
Roll up pastry to enclose meat, wet the edge before the final seal.
Cut the roll into desired lengths and place seam down on a baking sheet.
Brush with milk or beaten egg wash and make 3 cuts across the tops
Bake in hot oven (425-450 for about 20 minutes.

DH is still in the garage. He's making the kids "Shut the Box" for Christmas. He just finished the dice. I will post pics when it's done. It's going to be a really lovely gift.

ok yeah so caught up.
I'm off to bed soon
Spent the day visiting my uncle in the hospital. He has terrible diverticulitis and abcesses and all kinds of gut issues. Hasn't eaten in days. He's 6'2" and weighs 181 pounds! Then attempted lunch with the rest of the family and one trendy little place. there were 8 of us and in the whole place were only 6 tables. Asshat idea. So then I got fed up and we left to go somewhere without them lol. They went off to another trendy place. I'm kind of over waiting on a burger when instead we drove right over to our fave bbq place and sat right down and ate.
Got home after a fun drive in the rain (rain and rain and more rain) and made chocolate covered pb balls (buckeyes to noncalifornians) and sugar cookie dough. Baked off uh, 7 dozen maybe 8. They'll get frosted tomorrow.
Zach wanted a salad for dinner and Dh wanted a can of soup and Jacob sort of nibbled so I got off easy there.
Then got a comment on fb from sis. Asked her if she was coming to our house on Christmas since she didn't RSVP (annoyance 1). Oh yeah she says and probably with K and A (annoyance 2 and 3). No asking if they could extend the invite. ugh. I'll be avoiding people in my own house Christmas. Should be fun. Maybe they'll ahve to leave early.

Anyway the kids need to get to bed and I need to get to bed soon after so I can get up early and clean and frost and celan again and make breadsticks and finish cleaning before I go to work. Only working 6:30- 9. not sure what they think I'll accomplish but i an NOT going in early and I didn't go in today since I wasn't scheduled even tho three different people called me on three different occasions and asked me to work. Hey here's an idea...write up a decent schedule and overstaff it you lame-oes. I'm pretty sure if you ask someone to leave early they'll be fine with that.

Wow I'm just a ray of sunshine right? lol

Time to tuck kids in.

If you do your buckeyes in white chocolate, they are snowballs. Made 'em today, along with chocolate covered pretzels and caramels (plus huge pot of spaghetti sauce). Tomorrow--the cheese cake.

We're all nuts, you know. All these goodies we think it's necessary to make--then complain about how chubby we are...

Oh, gotta make spicy sugared walnuts, too!

Rainsong, that's one reason I haven't done much baking in a lot of years. With no family or close friends to give stuff away to, there's really no need to have dozens of cookies around for ME to eat!

Yep. I limited myself to two kinds of cookies this year. Well, three if you count the boy/girl chocolate chip cookies. The caramels I made were simply a way to get rid of some leftover caramel and the snowballs are for hubby since he likes them so much. Spaghetti sauce is for oldest DD and family, along with a loaf of Italian bread and a bottle of wine. The pretzels are for everyone--and most of the cookies will be leaving the house, too. Cheesecake? Well, DD's hubby got all excited when I mentioned it, so, since they gave us such a lovely early gift, I guess they earned it!

But we WILL be bringing some of it home 'cause I want to share with youngest DD and my neighbor.

Not the "pig" neighbor.

My Diocese counts it if you go to the Saturday night Mass. If you go to the earlier Saturday services you have to go again..

The church had gotten very lax in the last couple of years... We don't "HAVE" to fast or abstain anymore during lent and they move the feast days around so that they are convenient....

I don't like it. If you are going to be religious you need to "work" for what you believe in

Even though the girls have been to young to "count" we've always made them abstain and fast on Fridays. I did give them a small breakfast when they were little but since they received first communion they follow the same rules adults do.

I am on strike for Christmas... Ill have to update y'all later on that other fun situation but basically I said I'm done... We got invited to a friends for Christmas to eat tamales... I've never in my life had tamales for Christmas but if I don't have to cook, ill be good with that! Dh is trying to figure out how you have Christmas without a ham or turkey and I told him he was welcome to cook whatever he wanted.....

I am making a big pot on gumbo today since its so freaking cold outside. But I've got this Scrooge/grinch thing down pat! Lol.

If I ever need another d/w, I'd love to have one with a bottom rack big enough for me to get the plastic dog food bins in there. Machine at the old house could take them, this one won't. Not that it's a big deal to wash anything by hand, just that I know the dishwasher sanitizes them because the water temp is so high.

I kind of like figuring out how to load a dishwasher efficiently. It's like trying to pack the cargo space of the wagon for a camping trip! D/W Tetris sounds like fun!

Sort of medium local, LOL... one of the guys who lived in big house where BFF lived finished his PhD and teaches a couple of hours away. Prof's BFF dropped out of his PhD program, stayed in VA, got married and went to work for firm that publishes legal texts. Prof's BFF, prof and I have had some long heartfelt discussions over the years about advantages and disadvantages of dropping out of grad school--the two of us who did have had much more of a chance to put down roots and have stable careers. Back in the 80s/early 90s, humanities professors were kind of academic migrant workers--it's only been in the last 10 years or so as guys who earned PhDs in the 60s have been retiring that the market's opened up a bit. My BFF, prof's BFF and his wife and I all have stayed in touch although prof and I fell out of touch for a bit after he dated a friend of mine and it didn't work out. I think it was hard for him to see me for a while after that.

Anyway, prof's BFF and wife will be at prof's house for New Year's, my BFF and her husband are coming and they're all going to celebrate! They wanted me to come up for New Year's Eve, but I have to work a full day next Mon (last day of the year is always busy), then my friend who was insulted that I missed his birthday party to visit friends out of town the year before this and his GF are having a New Year's Eve party and I'd already accepted. I wouldn't have felt right bailing under the circumstances, though I already told them I'd be leaving before midnight. While (knock wood) Molly hasn't had any seizures for a while, I don't want her alone and terrified of the noise. Friend was a bit crabby about that so I have the feeling bailing altogether would have been seriously detrimental to friendship.

In any case, waking up early to meet everyone a couple of hours up the road for breakfast by the time they all wake up will be much more fun than trying to get out of town the night before. And the dogs are invited to prof's, so I won't have to rush back home! I can't WAIT to see everyone!!!

RS I seriously <3 you. And ERK too! xxoo

It's funny because now that everyone knows I make cards I feel like I can't just run off and get a store-bought one if I'm in a rush any more.

In Alaska they had reindeer sausage. I wonder if they could use your recipe to make reindeer balls.

Gack. I can visualize the rain. Swanky place sounds annoying. Annoyng people sound annoying. I hate it when people decide to rearrange someone's guest list without consulting the person doing the actual inviting. That comes across to me as saying 'well your hospitality doesn't suit my needs, so let me just fix that for you.' Um, NO. Your (polite) choices are ask nicely and take whatever answer you're given in good spirits, or decline and go hang out with whoever YOU want on YOUR list. Grrrrrr.

Oh--you and your friends won't mind eating on the sidewalk in front of the house will you?

I have to admit one reason I'm SO glad our family moved the celebration to January (other than way cheaper tickets and no travel during mad rush) is that making it any old weekend took ALL the pressure off my Mom. She went from being a stressed out ball of fury over the least thing not being perfect to just enjoying all of us being together and cooking whatever--still yummy, but the whole focus shifted from Each Morsel and Moment Must Be Perfect to just hanging out.

I have so much admiration for all of you who plan the holidays with love and joy and really enjoy putting a special day together, but who don't start launching nuclear warheads if things fall out of picture-perfect ideal completeness for a nanosecond. I have the feeling your families must have--and will keep building--really lovely memories.

E, I want to fly down there and hug you. Well, ok, and maybe just a small cup of your gumbo?

And then go out for cheese enchiladas.

Tell DH it could be worse--the traditional Jewish Christmas dinner in NYC is takeout Chinese.

Well, time to plug the work laptop into the ethernet cable and get a few things done there.

Someone has to make sure Santa's data complies with the standards, right?

Muahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
