I've only read about the news online. It's just horrific. What a senseless tragedy.

If I had young kids at home, I wouldn't have the news on. In fact, they were talking about reassuring your kids, and I commented to DH that I wouldn't have the TV on in that case. Of course they'll still hear things so it's good to at least make sure they feel secure, I would guess.

A lot of things I heard earlier in the day were changed later. I heard the shooter was 20, then 24. They gave out a name, that turned out to be his brother (whom they are talking to). They said the mom was a teacher at the school and killed there; nope, at her home. So it's definitely been an ongoing investigation all day.

Most of the classrooms at our elementary school have 20 or less students.

For me, that puts today's sad events into a sobering perspective.

Wow PH, you must have a good budget. For a number of years, we had 20 max in grades 3 and under (I think) because of a prop that passed. But now - with budget cuts - not possible. And that's a teacher, no aide. Older grades routinely had 30 or more.

Still going on Saturday. Lol.
I had read that they took like 3-4 lines about a storm and turned it into a huge big deal; and DD and I were just chatting and she said of course there's an elf thing and they expand on it and even tho Legolas wasn't mentioned in the book, surely he was there.... lol Stuff like that. And filling in things from the appendices that aren't in the Hobbit but to fill in the story.

Morning! Had fun at SU Hostess Club, made 3 awesome cards. Plus she had a pizza party for us but I stayed on track for my points for the day.

Rainy drizzly day here. But better than snow.

I was supposed to go to a graduation party today, but don't feel like it. The daughter of an old work friend of mine graduated from nursing school.

Never mind.

Just teasing. I have all the cards made but plan to work on the letter and mailing labels this weekend.

Based on what I've seen since ODS started school, it's more like declining enrollment rather than budget matters. I noticed that even back when I was doing the Box Tops & Campbell's stuff... the first few years, the school had around 410-425 students, and by the time YDS was in 5th grade it was down around 375-385.

When my boys were in elementary school, it wasn't unusual for several of the grades to have 4 teachers, to help keep the class sizes smaller. There were a few times they tried 3 teachers for either ODS's or YDS's grade, but that put each class around 25-26 students. The last several years, they've had 3 teachers for each of the grades K-5, but the class sizes haven't increased noticeably. It's been at least two years since I've subbed in a class with more than 22 or 23 students.

Doesn't declining enrollment mean less money coming in?

?? I don't know. I don't get into that aspect of it!

The numbers I gave earlier are just for our elementary school. As far as I know, enrollment is not declining across the whole county.

The county is closing one elementary school (let's call it "School L") at the end of this school year. When School L was built in the mid 1960s, it was in the county, but then in the mid 1980s the neighboring city annexed some county land and the school ended up within the city limits. Over the last 7 or 8 years the city has developed the land across the street from the school - now there's a Walmart there, and a Martin's grocery store, and several restaurants and so forth. Traveling through there on school days between 7:30-8:45 a.m. and 2:30 - 3:45 p.m. has gotten pretty rough. I know there's been at least one accident involving a loaded school bus at the intersection at the school entrance. So a few years ago the county decided to renovate "School W" to double its capacity, and close School L. Most of School L's students will be moved to School W, but some will go to a couple of the other elementary schools.

Yeah states might fund differently. I know they HATE when parents pull their kids out for a trip or something because they lose funding every time a child is not in class, whether they are sick or whatever. I only know because I heard them talk about it in the office a lot when mine were still in school. I don't know why the formula is like that - the teacher has to be paid whether there are 22 or 25 kids in her class on any given day, right?

You know, PH, that's good they realized the wisdom in getting the kids out of harm's way. Kinda makes you wonder who approved what, what was mis-communicated, etc.

Of course now I'm trying to think... I guess the most comfortable schools are those in neighborhoods, even if it's not "your" neighborhood. But in with homes. Our high school campus is mostly one story buildings with a few two stories in there. Baseball field and football field, pool (which was closed when DH graduated, needed repairs, city has a pool so swim team was using that, I don't know if it got fixed), so it's a decent sized campus for 2800 kids, right? All in one huge space. Parking lots. There is an elementary school next to the high school - separated by two parking lots - and across the street from the elementary school is one of the two middle schools. They stagger starting times but holy cow, I won't go near there if I don't have to. A few times DS overslept and I had to drop him off; I'm sure I moaned in our thread here when it happened. I'd get woke up out of a dead sleep and drive into that.

So I ended up going to the graduation party. I was glad I did. Hadn't seen my friend Deb for a long time. Her daughter Michelle graduated from Purdue with a double major - Nursing and Philosophy. Strange mix.

So this afternoon Leona and I are going to the mall. She has a brunch down in Chinatown, so we are going around 3pm.

Hopefully I can get my Xmas letters/tags ready for the post office before then. I got the envelopes addressed last night at least. Need to stuff, deliberate at length which tag fits which person's personality, put return addresses and stamp. I should get started.

I also need to finish my hot cocoa mix jars. I got the 5 for work colleagues done; have 4 more to finish for neighbors.

We put the tree up yesterday! Weren't going to because without DS, there's no way to move furniture back after he leaves. Then we realized that with a little work, we could shrink the kitchen table and move it to the side, hoist the light fixture above it, and put the tree there. It looks pretty good. Would look better with tinsel but DD said the idiot puppy would eat it so we left it off this year. lol

Have y'all seen the TV ad for the Galaxy phone, where the dad is going off on a business trip and the kids have made a video for him and they touch phones, and then mom says she made one too, but he probably shouldn't watch it on the plane....

Very cool, cute, sexy, I love it.

I did not so much love the one DD and I saw yesterday - same exact ad only with Santa, some elves, and Mrs. Claus saying the same thing. We were both appalled.

Fortunately he ate the card parts, not the intricately hand-colored center parts so I have cards this year.

One of my friends let me know. I watched for a bit and cried too. Absolutely tragic.

How did you all handle it with kids at home? I don't know what I would have said. That it's fortunately very, very rare, I guess. But it's such a weird balance of wanting kids to be careful and knowing what they need to know in an emergency, and not wanting them to go through life overwhelmed and fearful.

you know - i'm surprised but our school didn't say much of anything about it - i didn't know until after school got out and i checked facebook.

dd said they talked about it at school during english and that people thought it was sad - but nobody was scared. they were more worried about mental illness and talked more about the shooter and how sad it was he didn't get the help he needed.

very surprising take on it...

she did say they are all more aware now that it could happen to them. but nobody is scared... just aware.

her school did have a lockdown not too long ago - a crazy man had a shotgun out shooting squirrels out of his attic... the kiddos weren't in any danger - but it was a wow moment. the school handled it well i think.

I was crying during the service tonight for the victims in CT.

I liked what Obama had to say.

Just so very sad.

I got my Xmas letter / tags mailed today. Yippee!!!

All the Pondies are getting one with some sort of bird theme. They are all different. In honor of Wrose and that whatchamacallit bird she used to see on her walks. I ran out of time to put your names on them though, like I've done in past years. But they got mailed. The Post Office was even open today (on a Sunday, le gasp) so I was able to mail the overseas one too

All the Pondies are getting one with some sort of bird theme. They are all different. In honor of Wrose and that whatchamacallit bird she used to see on her walks. I ran out of time to put your names on them though, like I've done in past years. But they got mailed. The Post Office was even open today (on a Sunday, le gasp) so I was able to mail the overseas one too
I hang your tags on an ornament stand we have on which we put miniature snowglobes themed to the 12 Days of Christmas - birds are great! I do really appreciate your tags

THe card I posted Saturday says 0 views -- but 4 people favorited it. Is something wrong on the View count?

Ah, thanks Alyson.

I seem to get tons of the landscape type cards (Thomas Kinkade and similar). Which make nice tags but a little boring. So when I saw I had enough variety of bird cards to turn in to tags, that sealed the deal for the Pondies. All birds, but all different. I also had a lot of snowmen scenes but there wasn't a "linkage" to a Pondie post. Except that I could torture E with cold snow....

Yes, there's been a glitch in the system for the last several days. It's been reported to Lydia. There's a thread in the Site Suggestions forum about it but so far no definite word on when it will be fixed.

So are you insinuating that we are all dirty birds?
