Beer is always safe.

Except, perhaps, the (full) can of Billy Beer that my Dad kept as a collectors' item.

I'm actually having a glass of wine. I figured that one throughout the duration (2 weeks)of the antibiotics ( I've been on them a week already) would be OK.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. One present still to wrap and the santa presents to bring in from the car. Wish us luck.

Oh man I don't know about that. We found some old Old Milwaukee at my in-laws house, some in the fridge, and the cans were caved in. Saw some in the utility room too. Probably at least twelve years old! Nasty. Tossed.

Oh no, don't worry, nobody would dare drink the Billy Beer.

That can has held a place of residence on a top shelf of my parents' kitchen cabinets since the 1970s. Looks as new as the day it was purchased...

Merry Christmas everyone!

Shadow had me up around 5:30am.

We got about 1/2 inch of snow last night or early this morning. So I cleaned off my driveway, nice neighbor Sandra & Tom's drive, then I did neighbor Susan's. They are back in NY for the holiday but I think Leona's son Tim will drive his own car cuz he needs to head back to Madison tonight so he can park there. Plus it makes the house look more lived in.

Wishing everyone a very warm, peaceful, blessed and Merry Christmas.

I had a very intense talk with my Mom this morning when I called to wish her a Merry Christmas. She was talking about what a hard day it is for her, how it makes her remember her grandmother during the war being so sad after all their perfect, beautiful Christmas days before the invasion, and her grandmother's worry and silence and sadness every Christmas, not knowing where so many among the people in the family--siblings, children, their spouses--were. Mom said she always wanted to make those perfect Christmases for us. I talked a little to her about how much I appreciated that, but how all of her intensity and tension around everything being perfect wound up with stepdad getting tense and screaming at us, and how hard it was to want to be there for her and help make things good but at the same time kind of dreading all the pressure and tension and screaming that eventually transpired.

She admitted that she was really sad that none of the kids came home for Christmas, and that she now realizes how much of that was her own doing in putting so much pressure on herself and everyone else. I told her how much I love our 'wacky Christmas' celebration that all of us, as a family decided to move to January. I know at first for me, it came about due to having to work earlier in my working life, but eventually I started to treasure that Christmas in January had so much of the joy of the holiday because just by moving the celebration we'd cracked that relentless, hard shell of needing everything to be just so and flawlessly, wonderfully perfect.

I told her that for me, in the end, it's not the day that matters: for me Christmas isn't the holiday with all the expectations encircling it like a straitjacket, but the fact that we all worked so hard to heal so many rifts, and to find a way to celebrate joyfully and with so much more laughter and all the pressure lifted. I told her for me that grace, that work and love to find the good amid all the imperfection, WAS Christmas, the very core and love and faith of it, and that I had the feeling that if her Mom and grandmother could see what we've all done to make that happen, they'd be up there giving each other socialist fist bumps.

We both had one of those very happy good long cries together but I think in a way that talk was the very best way we could have celebrated Christmas together: in finding the love in all the cracks and impefections, and the grace and hope to find healing and the best of all we have together.

Merry Christmas to all of you, with all my love.

Ah you'll be fine. It was on QI that most of the time you're ok to drink with antibiotics, it's just traditional to tell you not to drink.

Merry Christmas Pondies! Am stuffed with food and surrounded by lovely prezzies and chocolates. Gearing up to a sandwich soon though, as we won't want to break off to tackle the hunger pangs during Doctor Who, which starts in an hour! Don't want to see the Doctor regenerate though so am a bit torn.

Helen, I had to read your Dr. Who post to DD (over the phone!). She's become quite the fan.

She posted this on FB, she has this cardboard nearly life-size Ten, and put it by the tree and every time she walks in, she scares herself! lol

Merry Christmas!

We Face-Timed with DD, and Video Chatted with DS.

Got RumChata and new iPod Touch.

Got NCIS calendar from DS! Got an impressive Star Trek clock from DD!

It was a nice holiday. Random other things.... but turkey is cooking, we'll eat a bit late tonight. No pressure to get up early so we ran late. lol

Oh, DH stuck a small stuffed Sharkie (mascot) in my Christmas stocking.

Turkey was good!!!

I haven't made more crack peanuts yet, PH, but I will! We have been trying not to eat all of them at once, so there are still some left that you sent. I'm still so touched that you did that.

We had a lovely Christmas dinner here the boys and Leona's family, and then we all went to see The Hobbit (Smaug) movie with great big spiders and that fantastic dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch (who also plays Sherlock and Julian Assange and Stephen Hawkings). Then back here for hot chocolate and more fun. A beautiful day.

The only disappointment was the spiral ham. I had bought "Cook's" brand at Jewel...it was not that wonderful. Going to make bean soup today with the ham bone and dice up most of what is left for casseroles.

A quiet morning. I got the ham carcass cleaned -- the big bone is in with the beans simmering and slices are prepped for dinners (some frozen), small ham cubes are done to add to the soup later, and a container with scraps for Shadow to dole out slowly with his dinner over the next week. Celery and carrots are chopped, also to add to the bean soup later.

Then settled down with a cup of coffee and am reading Girls of the Atomic City (about the uranium processing plant in Oak Ridge Tennessee during WWII. If you liked Henrietta Lacks or the Dustbowl book (Worst Hard Times) you would really like this. It's for January book club.

Well, quiet day. Soup is made. I made good headway in to the book, which I need to pass on to the next person by Jan 2. I took a short nap this afternoon. Rarely do that, but felt good.

Morning!! The only thing on the agenda today is the carpet cleaner guys are delivering back my oriental rug between 12-2. I'm going to just leave it rolled up and store it for the duration. So I have to be home for that. Afterwards, I might go browse the stores and see if I can find any of these deep discounts that the yahoo articles are proclaiming

Although to be honest, mentally I am thinking job uncertainty and "if I don't need it, don't buy it" -- frugality mode.

It was a nice holiday. Random other things.... but turkey is cooking, we'll eat a bit late tonight. No pressure to get up early so we ran late. lol
Wrose, what is RumChata?

I know enough to be impressed with all your other presents!

It was!

The rest of Christmas was lovely too, went to visit my friend in the mountains. She had a lovely, very simple Christmas dinner, then back to work yesterday and today. WFH'd, though, and got out today for a nice chilly 2 mile paddle.

No paddling yesterday, though. Between two nights of feasting, late conversation, and then the drive both ways, napping won out.

I haven't made more crack peanuts yet, PH, but I will! We have been trying not to eat all of them at once, so there are still some left that you sent. I'm still so touched that you did that.
MOUM! SNARPS!!!

Although to be honest, mentally I am thinking job uncertainty and "if I don't need it, don't buy it" -- frugality mode.
I'm stalking a pair of boots on the LLBean site. So far 15% off isn't enough. Maybe I should go look in the stores this weekend as well. I have a pair of black boots I love. I'm hoping to find a nice brown pair this year, but if I can't find a pair in my budget, I'll probably just wait till next year.

I've got the first bag of stuff to go to the animal shelter tomorrow for their thrift store. I'm going to donate my old couch to Good Will if I can get a friend with a truck and a couple of friends to help me move it, though if it doesn't happen this year, I'll get the tax deduction next year.
