To be honest, LOL, some of those kids this year just might be the deciding factor on whether or not she enjoys it.

She has a very no-nonsense, strict, almost sharp-tongued personality that makes a lot of people wonder why she still teaches. And she's been that way ever since ODS was in 3rd grade.

The funniest thing is, she drives a little red convertible! It is so definitely NOT the type of car one would expect her to drive!

Thanks for the insight, PH!! Funny how some people are not what the image seems to be.

I'm going to make more cookies but I think I'll do it tomorrow. I have to run to the store quick and am hoping it's my last run. I can pick up the potatoes for next week and milk.

I wish I could buy one piece of pumpkin pie. lol I kind of want a piece but don't feel like making a whole pie. DH doesn't care for it. DS used to help me. If I saw a small one, I'd get it....

Maybe a pumpkin muffin would satisfy that craving?

So I only have to work 2 hours today. Rest of day off.

Carpet guys are coming today to pick up my oriental rug for a cleaning. When they bring it back I'm not putting it back immediately because Shadow has had (more than) a few accidents on it; I'm afraid it will be ruined.

So in the meantime I bought an 8x11' rug from Overstock that will coordinate in the living room, but with the sales and everything I paid only around $200. So if it gets stained I won't be heartbroken. My oriental is worth a lot more.

So I think I need to make another trip to Home Depot for more tiles...

I think once Leona's daughter sees the coasters, she'll want to make a few.

And I'm on a roll...I found some fun coffee themed napkins and last night I made about 4 coffee coasters. Then I was thinking, as people leave work, get laid off, find other jobs....I could give them a coffee coaster to use on their new desk at their new office. So I'd like to do more.

LOL. It was just pretty amazing that she'd planned a craft project, period! As one of the aides said, "She planned something FUN?!?"

The kids had to make a card from a half sheet of green construction paper, and cut out a red Santa hat and a white beard for the front of the card, draw in the facial features, add cotton balls to make the beard and the trim on the hat fluffy, and write a note inside. The teacher had put out probably 50 full 9"x12" sheets of each color paper for the class of 16 students. So I cut down enough green to make 20 half sheets. She'd left patterns for the hat and beard and since they weren't very big, I cut down 5 sheets each of the red and white to quarter sheets so there wouldn't be so much waste.

The teacher really intended for the cards to be for the students' parents. But I overheard some of the kids talking about how their parents were divorced, and I just couldn't ask them to choose to make their card for one parent over the other. So I told the class they could make the card for anyone in their family - parents, grandparents, etc. I had the kids leave the cards at school overnight so the glue would dry (this was the last activity of the day). I read them all after the kids left, LOL. One girl made hers to her "Sissy" and wrote "I hope you don't get shampoo and condishuner". LOL! Several kids wrote notes to their parents thanking them for taking care of them. But the biggest heart-tugger actually came from the boy who had acted like a total turd the whole day - "Mommy I love you so much with all my heart." I have no idea what his home life is like, but considering the awful attitude he shows toward school and other students, I can't imagine it's all that good.

Marge, it sounds like you're enjoying crafting with Leona.

I have so much to do today, it isn't funny. But I'm super tired and my back is really hurting - probably a combination of being on my feet more than usual yesterday, and stress over trying to get things finished before Christmas.

Oh well, all I can do is tackle one job at a time.

So I got some shopping done this morning.

I wanted to go to this one little locally-owned home furnishings store to look for some stuff for my mom (and dad, but you know how stuff like that goes, it's mostly mom, LOL). I got there at 9:38 and found out that they don't open until 10:00. Grrr. So I went down the road to a little Mennonite grocery store that carries a lot of bulk food and such that you don't normally find in the chain groceries. I found these delectable goodies there...

Ok, so I got my morning errands done (Home Depot for more tiles, library, bank, Aldi's for milk, eggs and bread -- big snow forecast for Sunday)...

In case you can't read the fine print on them,
FROG = figs, raspberries, oranges, ginger
TOE = tangerine, orange, elderberry

They had only one jar of the toe jam, but I picked up two jars each of the traffic jam (strawberry, blueberry, rhubarb & raspberry) and the frog preserves, to give to both of my sisters.

So after I was done at the little grocery store, I went back to the home furnishings store. I found some stuff there for my family to give Mom & Dad, plus some placemats that I'll wrap for Dad to give Mom. (Did I tell y'all that at Thanksgiving, Dad gave me money and asked me to do his Christmas shopping for Mom?)

The home furnishings place also sells Yankee Candles, and they had some scents I hadn't seen before: Bright Copper Kettles, Warm Woolen Mittens, Cream Colored Ponies, and Crisp Apple Strudel. It made me laugh.

Then earlier this week when I was talking to Mom on the phone, she mentioned that she wasn't having any success doing her Christmas shopping for Dad. So I offered to give it a try for her. She wants to get him some pants but wasn't able to find his size. I haven't had a chance to look for any yet, though.

I'm glad I can help Mom and Dad by doing at least some of their shopping for them. But it's hard enough figuring out gifts for the four of us to give them!

ARGH!!!!!

I ordered two ornaments from Amazon.com for the boys.

I received a package today. The packing slip indicated that two were shipped and that I was charged for two.

But there was only one in the package.

ARGH! GRRRRR!

I've sent a message to the seller. Here's hoping this issue will get resolved quickly.

Give them a coupon book for stuff they might like to have done: car wash; scrub kitchen floor; oil change; cook dinner; take 'em out to dinner/movie; shovel driveway/mow lawn; a pedicure; massage; and so on.

Mmmm.... nah, I've peered into the Starbucks cases too, but I haven't been driving all over town looking. I didn't even think to look for it today. The store had the Skinny Cow Red Velvet Truffle bars on sale, so...... who needs pie.

But thanks for the suggestion. It's the whole idea of the custard-y pumpkin pie and all smothered with whipped cream.......

I met E out here, so only met her; with V also meeting us for lunch! That was the visit where E and family went to a baseball game and happened to be there to see Matt Cain pitch a perfect game.

That's a great idea! I should stamp a few more, I have a few on one of my shelves, just small ones, not too many, from when I had made a few sets. Some of the ones we've been using are aging, I could make one for DH to use for his water bottle...

I have to remember what I need. Just stazon ink, I have fixative if I use anything else, I guess...

Those are some good ideas, but (of course) they come with a list of "but"s.

My 80-something-year-old parents would never go for the pampering stuff like the massage or mani/pedi. At Thanksgiving I thought about getting Mom a gift certificate to her hair salon, but when I was taking her there for her appointment she mentioned that she wasn't sure if she wanted to continue with her usual stylist. So I ditched that idea.

Because we live just over two hours from them, that rules out the driveway shoveling - besides, we typically get more snow than they do! Their community's HOA has a contract with a lawn care service so their yard does get mowed weekly in warm weather, but I'm not sure it covers snow removal.

The last time Dad went to a movie theatre, he took my sisters and me to see Star Wars (the original!) and he slept through most of it. LOL He can't watch TV for very long before falling asleep, either. But maybe I can come up with some movie on DVD that they might like.

I do end up washing the kitchen floor for Mom at least once a year. Usually it's just before Easter. One time last summer when I was there they had a surprise ant invasion so I washed the floor after spraying the ants with Bug Stop and vacuuming them up. A couple years ago my sisters and I went in together to hire a cleaning lady who comes once a month and does the heavy-duty cleaning, so the jobs that get to be too tiresome for Mom do get done on a regular basis.

I know that both my sisters are giving them some gift certificates to some of the local restaurants.

The oil change would be a good idea if they drove enough to put mileage on their vehicles! LOL (eta: then again, does oil get gunky if it just mostly sits? hmmm.)

So really, the ideas are good, and I honestly do appreciate your input, Rainsong. They just don't seem to work well in this situation.

Mine has been aching since Tuesday. I hear ya, girl. I know I was on my feet almost all day trying to get some tedious chores done, and I'm still paying for it. Vitamin I to the rescue. (Ibuprofen)

I got there at 9:38 and found out that they don't open until 10:00. Grrr. So I went down the road to a little Mennonite grocery store that carries a lot of bulk food and such that you don't normally find in the chain groceries. I found these delectable goodies there...
HAHAHAHAHA

I started running into what I called "weird foods" when I moved to Atlanta. This was back in the late 70s. I was in a grocery store, meat section, and saw pig's feet. And pig's ears. Wow. I had never seen them in the store out in the freezer, for anyone to buy. rofl

Then some friends took me to one of the grocery stores that carries really weird foods like fried grasshopper, etc.

Bleah. Glad nobody made me eat any of it.

Ha ha, great great gift.

Geeze, Louise. They were only suggestions! Come on,girl. Ya gotta brain and you know your parents. What would THEY like for you and hubby to do for or with them? Of course the kids could always help--read them a story they've written themselves? Put on a play? Sing them some favorite songs?

Imagination is the start of everything!

Anyway, I ended up getting a set of chair pads for Mom & Dad's kitchen chairs, and a matching tablecloth. Not just for cushioning their tushes, but I thought the extra height might make it a little easier for them to get up out of the chairs. (They're the thick padded kind, not the woven rug looking kind.) So I hope they like them.

Oooh! Since Mom and Dad have the same kitchen table & chairs we have (just in a slightly different finish), I should see how the chair pads look on ours.

When the boys were little and would want to know what we were having for supper, sometimes I used to joke with them and say we were having pickled pigs' feet. They used to laugh and say there was no such thing.

Then I actually saw jars of pigs' feet in our local Walmart. Bwaaa ha ha

I just checked the forecast. It's changed to just a few inches. Originally the forecast was 6 inches.

On the 10 day forecast, looks like after Christmas we are going in the deep freeze again. It's been a hard winter already, for just being December.

Have really been enjoying some books I've read recently by Kate Morton. "The House at Riverton" and "Forgotten Garden".

PH, sounds like a good idea. The "help getting up" part is thoughtful, it's decorative too, and obviously for both of them, not just your Mom.

I got Leona a gift card to her favorite store (which happens to be TJ Maxx, LOL) -- but wanted something a little more personal.

Brainstorm! She loves music so I just bought tickets to the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic in March. I think she'll enjoy an evening out! (Me too)
