I'd go with layers--I agree on maybe a thermal layer under.

I'm a HUGE fan of LLBean fitness fleece. Pricey (the sales aren't as good as they used to be) but I live in them this time of year so I can keep thermostat low and stay comfy.

I did wear a heavy winter coat when I'd go up to New England for work this time of year but I agree they're bulky and a pain to lug around. For this climate, I'm big on layers--fitness fuzzy and a down or thick fuzzy fleece vest.

That way I can just shed an outer layer or two or put them back on as sun goes in and out or breeze picks up.

I hear you on the coat.

You know how much money I saved by having my babies in Florida? NO COATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Bean stuff. I have a sweater I bought in college that I still haven't worn out 30 years later. After about 12 years I wore a hole in the rubber sole of my blucher mocs from college and they started coming unstitched but I kept them and they were my pottery studio shoes back when I used to throw pots.

Their stuff is not cheap but compared to name brand stuff like North Face it's good value for what it is. They used to mark stuff down more when it went on sale. I have a gazillion fuzzies from getting 1 or 2 at the end of every season. After 7 or 8 years of wearing the same size it's kind of like having a little wardrobe of them! For outdoor stuff like the sunproof shirts I wear for paddling, I'll buy one at the end of the season in whatever colors they still have in my size that are on sale, same with the fitness fleece. All the outdoor stuff I've bought from them stands up well to getting washed a lot after getting really grungy, sitting around damp in the car after a day of paddling, etc. Then when it gets old and softens up and it's gone on lots of trips it starts to feel like not just a sweater but a long time travelling buddy.

I don't mind paying more for their stuff because it lasts forever, but if I were buying for kids, I'm not sure I'd want to spend that much on something they'll grow out of quickly. But I keep their stuff long enough to get all sappy about it.

My brother's coming up from Oregon - I called him to see if he wanted to pick out the door, b/c he's a contractor and it will be his house someday and Mom told me just to pick something - and he decided to come up and take care of it. I think he doesn't think me capable, but hey, I know people, LOL. My contractor is building a house down the road and he would have boarded the door, ordered a new one, and installed it.

Mom says brother is being the man of the family. I told her if she keeps having crises he'll move up here - she is not at all averse to the idea, LOL!

Mom is certainly having a sad year, though. Dad died, three thefts (a raft/dock, kayaks - which were recovered, and now who knows what...). I told her I think it's time for a security system...
Oh Alyson. That just SUCKS. I'm really sorry to hear it. How is your Mom doing? That is so much to go through in such a short time.

I agree on the security system though. I think that's a good idea.

Oh--and speaking of Christmas letters... I took in some paper to work to print them after everyone went home this evening. I forgot that our color printer puts a watermark on things when you print both sides. I printed a few with a watermark that says 'none' before I realized it was doing it. Grrrrr... I guess I can use them for scrap paper for stamping.

I did create a new watermark that says 'peace and joy' and printed the rest with that. I just hate wasting paper. Sigh. BAD hippie!

In good work news, though, I can see the end of my to-do list from here! I actually did NOT bring work home tonight!!! And I have some Hanukkah cards that will get mailed tomorrow now that they have letters to go inside them!

Cruise Trena!!!

She is such fun. Her work just exudes her joy of life. And she laughs and giggles while stamping, it is such fun to go to the retreats with her --

WOW. It's coming here too.

DD and I set out a little after ten this morning, I had a light hoodie, and took it off after we got to the first store. I put it on, and off, a few times, it was cooler in the shade, but sunny and warm otherwise. We got back about 2:15.

Had to go back out half an hour later, and I noticed the sky was starting to cloud over (predicted colder and rain starting tonight), so I didn't need my sunglasses even though the sky overhead was blue. We got to the store (a mile away) and got out of the car and HOLY COW. It was COLD and WINDY. I was clutching my little hoodie around me. We came out half an hour later and could see huge banks of clouds running up the mountains north of us.

DH and I went for dinner as it's not raining yet - I think we'll stay home the next couple nights - and it was quite cold. I wore my warmer coat.

They said snow level down to 3000 feet so that means the surrounding mountains.

We got down to 32 last night, tonight s little warmer at 35. It was cold in the house this morning 62 at 5am but warmed up to 70 during the day. Cooling off again. So, after you get the chill and snow Wrose, it's supposed to reach us Thursday night/Friday morning. Certainly rain and possibly snow to 3000 ft which is our level.

DS 1 and his grade had a fabulous time at Biztown. And they had proper coaches for the journey, not school buses! Well a 4 hour round trip.

She's spending lots of time gathering serial numbers and photos of every single pair of earrings she purchased during her trips around the world... I told her she should just send the basics to the detective now and tell him she'd send an update with specifics (not to mention they won't go looking for ~$15-50 earrings...) but she's trying to be complete.

Turns out Dad's passport was taken, too, so that's a federal crime.

The only way any of it will help is if they find something specific (tv or laptop with serial number - I don't get the impression they look very hard, regardless) or if the same crew is caught - there's been a rash of robberies in the area.

Yeah getting good lasting stuff is great if you have lots of kids and plan to pass it along.... Of course if it's for cold weather and you don't live in Alaska, you might have to hope each kid is the right size in the right season!

I have stuff I paid for on layway at a cool old ladies' shop on Charlottesville's downtown mall that I still wear. The only bad thing is, even if you get less stuff but wait for the good things to go on sale, after doing that for 30 years you wind up with a lot of clothes, LOL!

Of course I also have about a gazillion t-shirts from 10ks I used to run, canoe and kayak races, college newspaper, camp where I worked for years during the summer, various trips, technology conversions (one of my old depts used to have me design a t-shirt for every major rollout so about 5 shirts from my 6 years there). I've spent the last several years winnowing out the closets. Haven't gotten rid of the size 12 pants but gave up on the size 12 jackets and sweaters from when I was in college. Even after reduction there's no way I'll be that small again on top. Hated to say goodbye to the striped oxford button downs with the Eljo's tags in them (PH I imagine you're the only one who will understand about my vintage 70s/80s Eljo's shirts!).

He is doing well. I brought him home just a little bit ago. He's tired, but glad to be home.

I will take all of DD's tshirts from soccer tournaments, cheer competitions, track meets, gates workshops, etc. and have a quilt made out of them.

Ever think of doing that?

Just take the center imagine and make a square with it. Its a pretty popular trendy thing to do around here for high school seniors. I was thinking of doing it for DD after the end of middle school then again in high school.

Sorry... Eljo's doesn't sound familiar.

During marching band camp week, they did "color days" where each day, the kids wore a different color - like, for example, since they played the Pink Panther theme, they were supposed to wear pink one day. They had a yellow day in honor of playing the Duck Tales theme. ODS didn't have anything yellow. I have two yellow t-shirts, so I let him choose one to borrow.
He picked my college dorm t-shirt... from 1988-89.

DH's t-shirts are like MO's, I think. I took up quilting thinking I'd do that. But the ones I saw back then, the t-shirts were centered in squares, and there weren't that many in any one quilt. Plus quilting is not cheap if you have someone else do it. He would have ended up with a dozen quilts. So I keep hoping that as they become threadbare, he'll toss some! lol

Anyway, quilting didn't work for me. It's exacting and my eyesight isn't that good and my fine motor skills aren't good either. Sigh. I did like it, though. But I liked stamping better in another way. You get a done product WAY faster than you do with quilting. LOL!!!!

But if it's trendy there now, maybe someone's come up with a cheaper and quicker way to do it!

Still dealing with DS's trip to the ER in Ohio in August when he got the stitches. He was out of network because there's no Kaiser in Columbus. Apparently there has been some mis-communication or non-communication. I think I got one thing straightened out today. I figure we should have to pay SOMETHING like maybe $100 co-pay or deductible or something. Even maybe a co-pay on each bill.

There's Radiology, doctors and the hospital. Each are billed separately. Want to see?

Before insurance.

The radiology bill outside of the hospital was just $46, not sure what that was for, exactly.

The doctors bill was for $1084.

The hospital bill was for $2,153.35.

Add them up and that's what you'd pay to go to the ER in the middle of the night without insurance.

Sorry... I'm a bit out of sorts today. One of our marching band families lost their home last night due to what's believed to be an electrical fire. They are all safe (both parents and two teenage kids and several pets) except for one cat that is still missing. But they lost pretty much everything else.

So I'm hoping the four of us will get the time to sit down together this evening and come up with things we can do to help them. As far as clothes go, we may have some shirts to fit the son and mother and maybe the dad, but not their daughter (bless her heart, she makes me feel small). I know from a short conversation with the band booster president today that the family went to Walmart in the middle of the night to get some clothes.

But I'm also thinking about Christmas, and wondering how to go about finding out how we can help them have some presents.
