Marge, it sounds like you had a great time visiting the farmer's market today. Too bad about the bread. It sounds like it was just too yummy for Shadow to resist!

We won our football game last night, 27-14. Hooray! And it was a good game, not a dirty ugly one like when they sent our guys to the hospital a few years ago.

We didn't do quite as well at the competition today as we'd hoped, but the important thing is that our total score today was 8 points higher than our score was last year. That's something the band should definitely be proud of.

They only announced the ranking for the top 5 bands in our class, and we were either 6th or 7th (the boys didn't remember for sure). I thought we did better than the 5th place band, but then, I was busy taking photos during our band's performance so maybe I missed something. Our soloists definitely sounded better than the 5th place band's soloists. Oh well - it's all pretty subjective. And at least they didn't come in last place!

After two Oktoberfests today, I'm beat! And stuffed, even though I didn't think I ate that much. I had two beers earlier and one shot of RumChata tonight. Nice.

RumChata. I'd never heard of it tonight. I asked our friend's husband bartender (not officially, lol, just at their house) to make me something yummy, he asked a few questions, was having trouble with mixing whatever he had in mind then suddenly a light went off and he said, I know what. And he poured a shot of this white stuff and I sniffed it. And I tasted it. And I smiled.

Quote:
RumChata is a cream liqueur that has become very popular since its release in 2009. It is made from a blend of five-time distilled Caribbean rums with Wisconsin dairy cream and flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, and other 'secret flavors.' The inspiration for RumChata is horchata, a very popular drink in Mexico and Spain that actually dates back to the time of ancient Egyptians. In Egypt and Spain the chufa nut was ground with water, cinnamon, and sugar to make a drink that has the look of milk. When the recipe came to Mexico rice was used in place of the nut. Traditionally, horchata does not contain dairy products, though RumChata liqueur does. RumChata contains homogenized cream and does not need to be refrigerated. An open bottle can be stored at room temperature for about 6 months.
Learn About RumChata Cream Liqueur and Find RumChata Cocktail Recipes

I found generally online that it sells for around $25 for 750 ml.

Then I checked an old favorite, Green Chartreuse, which, when combined with unsweetened pineapple juice and poured over ice, looked like and was called Swampwater. Nothing nice on a hot and humid Kentucky afternoon. It's now going for around $64 for 750 ml. Wow.

OMG I just Googled RumChata.

It says it is all the craze in WI and IL.

It is brewed in Wisconsin -- Jane how did we not know this when we drove past Milwaukee? Or yesterday????

Exactly! ha ha ha

Apparently it is very new, as you probably saw, like 2009? It was very yummy.

Jane, we went out to the Desert Museum for probably the last time. It was the first weekend of the raptor free flight and at the end they flew the red tailed hawk. She didn't take off so they finished the "event" and those of us who wanted to waited for her to take off and fly. She found the thermals and got to about 1500 feet. A wild redtailed hawk flew close and we watched for about 20 minutes as she soared, flew off the other bird, soared again, made sure the other bird flew off then dropped down and landed in front of us. I love the way the birds can just fly off if they want to. She certainly wasn't ready to come down when they first tried!

Then football for half of the second game and all the third game and I'm sure DH will want to watch Walking Dead. He can watch the recording after I've gone to bed.

Hello Pondies! Nice morning here.

DD is having the furnace worked on. She couldn't get it to heat. She contacted me that something is crap metal and rusted out, I said Call your dad, if it's a big expense, let him find out how we'll pay for it - send them a check or what. Sigh. But yeah if it's cold and the heat isn't coming on, you have to fix it!

I'm going to a back class later this afternoon. I took it about three years ago, before the surgery, so asked if I could go back for a refresher.

Hi all. Very cold here this morning.

Have a doctor's appointment after work to get some skin tags removed around my neck & shoulders. And to get a plantar's wart looked at. I had it removed a few years ago after France vacation but it has come back

It's chilly here. But Friday in Atlanta is showing a high of 55 and a low of 30. Don't know if there will be heat yet for DD.

Hey Wrosey. Since you're probably the biggest Star Wars fan in the Pond, and you're the oldest ('cause you were reportedly born in the 1800s)...

I'm not really looking forward to the colder weather moving in already.

We have our last home football game of the season Friday night. It's Senior Night - so ODS and the other 4 seniors in marching band, as well as all the seniors playing fall sports, will be recognized before the game.

Right now the forecast high for Friday is 48. That's about 20 degrees colder than yesterday and today. And it will be colder than that at game time; the sun will have set by the time the game starts.

That's cold.

The temperature range where DD is, is looking like it's between 28 and 55 later this week - and she won't have a working furnace.

From the "this shouldn't be funny, but it kind of is" files:

At each of the marching band's performances this season, the names of everyone with a leadership position are announced. The announcement is pretty much the same script every week. It starts off with the band teacher's name and her assistant directors, then names ODS as woodwinds section leader, and the girl with seniority as woodwinds drill sergeant, then the section leaders & drill sergeant for brass, and eventually gets to naming Farquaad as drumline captain.

Only thing is, Farquaad's last name keeps getting mispronounced. Out of all the performances this year, only 2 people have said it correctly. (One of them was our assistant principal, who still keeps close ties to the band because he was the band teacher before he was made AP.)

At the first home game, I was sitting with another band mom, and when we heard the regular football game announcer mispronounce Farquaad's name during the pregame show we just looked at each other and went "WHAT?!?" and couldn't help but laugh. And nobody corrected the announcer before the halftime show... or before the other games this season. Except for last week, the regular announcer wasn't there. I don't recall the names being announced at pregame, but the assistant principal did the band's announcing at halftime.

The announcers at the competitions have mostly used the same mispronunciation as the football announcer. The lady at one comp did say it correctly. I missed hearing it at Saturday's competition but that's another story.

In defense of all the announcers, it doesn't help that looking at the spelling of Farquaad's last name, it reasonably could rhyme with three different words in the English language. The announcers just tend to keep choosing the wrong one to rhyme it with.

So the reason why I missed hearing Farquaad's name at Saturday's competition?

The competition was at JMU, which is where ODS has gone for concert band camp the last two summers. Our band teacher graduated from JMU and is a former drum major for the JMU Marching Royal Dukes. She also has been "dorm mother" for concert band camp the last two years. The JMU Director of Bands conducts the concert band at band camp. Last summer, when we were walking to the car at the end of camp, ODS stopped to thank Dr. Director of Bands for his work with the camp, and they chatted about how ODS wants to go to JMU, and that sort of thing.

So anyway, DH had moved a few rows away from me in the stadium because we had some really rude talkers close by to the right of us and he was planning to record the performance. (I actually went over during our performance and asked the rude people to please keep their conversation to a whisper. Some people. Sheesh.)

Standing just a few feet to my left was Dr. Director of Bands. Since he knows our band teacher pretty well, I'm sure he was wanting to pay close attention to our band.

So at the end of the performance, I was applauding our band, and Dr. DOB came a bit closer and said, "You must be a proud parent from that band." I told him yes, that both my sons were in the band. As we were chatting, the announcer was going through the "the marching band is under the leadership of..." script and announced ODS's name, and I broke off the conversation to clap a lot for him, LOL. Then I turned back to Dr. DOB and grinned and said, "Sorry, that was my son they announced." He must not have been paying attention to the announcer because he asked which position and what my son's name was. So I told him ODS's name and that he was woodwinds section leader.

And Dr. DOB said, "Oh, yes, clarinet, right? From summer band camp?"

Dr. DOB remembered ODS. Which is a good thing.

Already? Not too early I suppose as my friends in south Dakota got hit by that 3 feet of snow the first weekend of October.
