Definitely didn't have floats and parades at my high school. It sounds like it could be fun, though!

It's weird because I see ads for High School Musical and all those things and think wow, that just looks like a whole different planet from where I went to high school.

Although it's interesting how the cruelty appears to be timeless for those on the fringes of things.

Interesting interview.

I think that whole discussion of injury and healing was pretty interesting.

I think her experience and all the truly, profoundly unlikeable ways she behaved remind me of that whole story of the prodigal son. The prodigal son was an arrogant arse, but in the end there is still that chance for transformation and sorting things out and doing better. And then there's the experience of the son who behaved well and did the right thing the whole time, and that natural resentment of the welcome home his prodigal brother gets from the patriarch. I guess it's hard because when someone behaves that cruelly to other people, even if you believe in that possibility of grace, you also don't want to see someone behave that badly and come out of it some sort of hero. And I guess that's the challenge of believing that grace is possible: either on that spiritual level, or the simple level of someone struggling to figure out how to set things right and do better.

I think one thing I've realized is that it's very hard to give back better than you were given. Obviously just from the number of abused children who go on to abuse others, or people who grew up with incredible cruelty who go on to struggle wretchedly in relationships. They're still accountable for their choices, and obviously in the 21st century in the US, there are all sorts of therapists and community clinics and support groups for people who want to make better choices. But you still have that shame of a past you can't change, and it takes a lot to heal that and not feel the weight of it constantly dragging you backwards. So I guess in a way that ambivalence about Strayed brings up a lot of those questions: if you want to believe that it's possible to do better, you have to have some acceptance of where people start from, even or maybe especially when it's an absolutely unlikeable, cruel and selfish place. There's that endlessly hard balance between accountability and forgiveness.

I think that's why I feel drawn as much to conservative ideals of responsibility as I do to liberal ideals of community because for me it will never be a question of who's right so much as a problem of finding--and living, and expecting from others--that balance in figuring out what you have to struggle with, and then finding the support you need to get through that struggle. Some people can do it on their own, but most of us need those friendships, or people who care, even in the impersonal chance crossing on a trail or the committed response and caring of a teacher or counselor, or the quiet joy and support of someone who loves us.

But we need the inner strength and commitment as well.

I didn't like Strayed but I understood her feeling so broken down and worthless that she didn't feel she deserved the love her husband gave her, and somehow felt more drawn to that destructive escape. Maybe having lived with someone who did that to himself with alcohol made it easier to understand that drive to enter an altered state and kind of drive into it with all that anger and hostility. By the end, I did admire her perseverance, and I think ultimately, she made it to the other side.

Yes, I can see your point of view on Strayed. I guess I need to be a bit more tolerant and not judge her so harshly.

It's pretty hard to avoid judging someone who takes that kind of profound love and hope and deals with it by dousing it with gasoline and setting it on fire.

Hi. Had a very relaxing weekend at our friends house in the White Mountains. 65 ish during the day and 35 overnight on Friday! Birds, wild horses and just very peaceful woodland surroundings. It's about 220 miles north but on a lot of single lane roads so long drive each way. Drove through the Salt River Canyon. Absolutely amazing. I'll see if I can find pics before I go to bed!

I looked at pics. Gorgeous! Wow. Yeah you don't mind a long drive through such beauty, yes??

And really glad you enjoyed the cooler temps! I love heading into fall, losing that high heat.

I bought ceramic gas logs for my fireplace today after work! And new fireplace doors!

Need to get the installation scheduled. I rarely use my fireplace what with the mess of wood logs, the ashes and all so I thought I'd get a whole lot more use out of it.

I'd like to change our fireplace to gas. It would be an asset for the house. Since they introduced "spare the air" days, it's a huge fine if you light a fire those days. And each winter I have found that the days you want a fire, are all "spare the air" days.

So there's this movie on AMC, Four Brothers, and there is lots of murder and blood and people deliberately tortured and set on fire.

But all of a sudden, one of them is really angry and goes, "SHOOT!"

And that makes me laugh. Can't say that other four letter word, nope, but all the guns to the head and blood are a-ok.

They are coming to install the gas logs in the morning. I'll WFH in the am and go in to the office in the afternoon.

The guy to measure for the new fireplace doors comes Thus am before I leave for the retreat.

I can just picture you typing away, you and Shadow snug and cozy on a winter night.

And Steve online downstairs!

How is Shadow doing? Has the vet come yet? I'm thinking about both of you. Will you give Shadow a brushing or two for me? That was so much fun! Not only was it like discovering that Shadow was harboring an entire other dog in secret inside his coat but I finally met a fellow who sheds more than Sonny--and Sonny can fill a brush 3-4x/evening in the spring.

So what do you think happened at the house? I loved how they left it ambiguous. Just a great, great episode. And when Gibbs got the call at the end. Mark Harmon says so much just with his eyes and posture. He really brings his character to life with those small gestures and expressions.

I HATED seeing Abby so despondent though.

Nah... not addicted at all.

Good Morning, pondies! I've missed you guys so much. Sitting at the computer is a rare luxury for me these days. I have my phone with me, but getting on SCS through my phone just doesn't work out. SCS needs an app! I could keep up much better that way.

My new gas logs (the installers were early!)

They measure for the new fireplace door (textured black with antique brass accents) tomorrow and it should take about 4-6 weeks.

We miss you too! I agree though that it's rough trying to do SCS on something small. I tried once on my iPod Touch and uh, no. lol Thus the low posting numbers when I only had that with me.

Gotta get downstairs and organize and pack for the stamping retreat. Runs Thus noon to Sun noon. It's about 50 minutes away. I'm going to commute.

Saving on 3 nights hotel helps to pay for the gas logs, and that way I can give Shadow his am and pm walks.

So it took me about 2.5 hours last night to pack up supplies for the retreat. Somehow I feel more disorganized than for previous retreats. I'll probably get there and find I forgot black ink or something.

So I bought about a hundred daffodil bulbs. Might get them put in on Sunday afternoon.

But realized I need a bulb digger for that many bulbs. Maybe I'll pass an Ace or Home Depot on the way to the retreat.

Looks like T.S. Karen is heading toward the gulf, not too bad a storm, expected probably to be right on the edge between tropical storm and hurricane. Path could take it over Atlanta Sunday-Monday.

Thankfully, the Braves aren't playing there then. They play tonight and tomorrow, then out to LA. If there are five games, the last one will be in Atlanta next Wed.

I told DD to keep an eye on it too!

I told DD to keep an eye on it too!
I haven't been keeping an eye on the weather. So long as it stays dry until Sunday, it'll be good. We have a home football game tomorrow night and another marching band competition on Saturday.

I'd rather not have rain for next Wednesday, though. Our band is going to an MRD rehearsal that evening. I don't know if they'll only watch, or if they'll get the chance to chat with any of the MRDs. ODS knows a few of them from his years in band; our last year's drum major is one of them.

Yeah too far ahead to see next Wed., if it did go that way, and not slow down much, it could pass through your area not too long after Atlanta, maybe Mon.-Tues. - if you're lucky!

But once it hits land, for me, all bets are off. This far ahead...
