So Helen and ERK. Shall I bring the tradition across the pond?? lol!
Hmm, no you're OK. So they wear them all day. Interesting. I've not come across it before.

Well leaving in November is almost next year. I know DD had surgery around Thanksgiving so although we'd love to see you when we're there just after that, we totally understand if you're busy with other things.

So, E. Do the kids make the mums themselves or do they buy them somewhere? Is it big business?

HUGE business.
you can buy the mums - but for the most part the kiddos have mum making parties and have fun with it. there are pictures on facebook where dd make her date's and then he made hers that weekend with a group of his guy friends. it's fun how the boys (or at least their moms) get into it.

ddd (dd's date) made hers by himself. he wanted it just perfect.

they've known each other since 5th grade - neither one fo them would ever talk - but their 5th grade teacher swore they would "hook up"... he went to one of the magnet schools for intermediate - she went to the other so they didn't really see each other for 3 years. until this fall when they had classes together...

San Angelo. But no. I suppose with the boys not even being in school at the time and none of the people we knew had high school kids. Here, the high school kids we know don't seem to have done that. Of course, everything is bigger in Texas, too!

Hmmm. I'm not sure if they do mums here. I haven't heard anything about them in the years ODS has been in high school.

Back at my high school, one of the school clubs used to sell the mums (for like $1/each, it wasn't much). You could buy one for whomever you wanted, and the club would deliver it to that person the morning of the homecoming game. Mainly boys bought them for their girlfriends, but some of the clique-y girls would buy them for their besties. So all the really popular girls would end up with 3 or 4 mums. They weren't all decorated up as much as in E's photos; they were just plain yellow mums with green and white ribbons (the school colors were green, gold and white). My senior year, my best friend and I bought mums for each other so neither of us would be mum-less.

E lost me on the "mini mums" and finger thing.

Then again, the boys' school doesn't do the parade with all the floats and all that crap, either. At the football game they just introduce the people nominated for the homecoming court and announce who was voted king and queen. Each of the four grades decorates a corner of the fence around the football stadium.

Back home all the school clubs would make a float and there would be a parade around the stadium. I don't remember now if the parade was before the game or during halftime. I had to ride the French Club float one year dressed up as a Native American because the team we were playing were the Chiefs. The experience sucked. LOL

So many people have fond memories of high school and how it was "the best years" of their lives.

I'm not one of them.

Ugh the Malware warning is back. What a pain.

So instead of quoting and having to click through it each time, I'll just answer what I think of.

PH, I'm shocked VT didn't win by even more, after those first two TDs. We just couldn't get out of our own way.

Oh PH, also - High School. Yeah not my thing either. I had friends, I still have some of those friends, but I pretty much avoided all the drama by being quiet. I wasn't one of the popular kids and really didn't have those aspirations - didn't drink for quite a few years, and they'd show up to dances drunk (ugh); I was probably kind of nerdy then but nobody called it that. I never felt like I fit in that well.

It most definitely does not qualify anywhere near any of the best years of my life. If there were good things those years, it had nothing to do with the life of High School. I liked learning, I was great in math, so that was okay. Of course popular kids don't appreciate it when you're good in math; they don't care, right? lol

I was definitely a late bloomer. I don't have any hatred and wasn't mistreated. I was pretty much quietly ignored for the most part.

I don't know nuthin' about no mums. Floats and parades? Wow. Didn't even see those at any of the colleges I went to.

Georgia Tech did have a Wreck parade every year for Homecoming.

Looks like school and bands and homecoming and goats is taking up people's time.

I subbed for one of the aides today. It turned out to be a super easy day. The entire first grade was on a field trip today, so I didn't have the two groups of kids I was supposed to have between 8:30 and 10:00. The one kindergartener I was told to keep an eye on was absent today. And I didn't have any kids to work with after 2:10. I hung around in the office for a little while, chatting with the secretary and the nurse, and delivered a couple of dismissal change notes to teachers before checking out before the buses started loading. Yay.

ERK, GREAT news on your house!

Can you lay out your rough itinerary for us for the different regions of the country? Or in AU if you feel more comfortable putting it there?

We had homecoming in HS and college, but I never heard of those big poms with ribbons E, or carrying them all day. Must be a Texas thing

V!!!! You've been on so infrequently lately (and I totally understand that with yoyr kids and job....) -- well anyway, I lost track of the Avon walk date. Did not remember it was coming up in September. I guess my leaky 50+ yr old mind can be blamed too.

Anyway this morning I donated online, Hope it is not too late. I took about half of the money that you guys had collected in 2010 that was "delayed en route". So please consider it a Pondie donation. (The rest will go to daffodil bulbs I think in honor of Rob's spring birthday.)

Was walking Shadow at 6:30am and saw my neighbor down the block (she sold her townhouse, had an estate sale last weekend and remember I got a floor lamp). She was moving last minutes odds and ends to her new apartment. The moving truck for the big stuff had come a few days ago but some stuff wasn't ready to go. Like she hadn't yet emptied the kitchen drawers, etc.

She had already done one carload. Before 6:30am!!! She looked exhausted and her heel spur and knee were bothering her. She's about 63 yrs old and I used to go to WW with her every Sunday morning. I asked if she needed help. She hesitated....but then admitted yes, she did.

So I came home, deposited Shadow, showered and went back to help. We did 2 more carloads -- load, go to apt, unload up to 6th floor. And loaded up the car for a 3rd batch that is going to charity. Then she asked me to wrap up a pottery collection and would I mind wiping out the fridge? (I kept asking what more I could do because she looked so tired after the past few weeks.) She had paid cleaning ladies to come the previous day so the rest of the house was done/looked good & clean, but in one of the carloads was food from the freezer and fridge. So the cleaning ladies had not been able to do the fridge. So she had to go meet someone at her new apt who was coming to hang artwork, so I went back and did that.

If I hadn't just happened by, she would have struggled all by herself. The reason she is moving is her husband is now in a nursing home with Alzheimers and is is moving to a more affordable, smaller apartment. Just like my old neighbors who moved to CA last year (new neighbor Susan that Jane met bought their place) -- they thought they could do it by themselves. I kept offering to help them but they said it was under control....till the last 2 days they caved. I ended up cleaning out their fridge too, LOL.

Maybe my next career could be helping people exit houses and get them ready for the new owners, LOL
Marge, I love how kind so many people in your neighborhood are. It was a pleasure meeting so many of your wonderful neighbors. Although i would have loved to pumpkin-bomb the fences of the not-so-nice ones...

(maybe this is the reason you didn't introduce me... lulz)
