It was pretty quiet here while I was gone of course some of you had things going on at the same time, but nice to not have too much of a catch up.

I think the band teacher will only want us to record our school.

I think it's interesting to see what the other schools do - most of the time, anyway. Over the years, we've seen some pretty awesome performances, some poorly executed ones, and a few snoozefests. There was one band last year whose show theme was "FDR" - as in Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which is pretty bizarre for a field show - but they looked and sounded excellent.

The different uniforms can be interesting too. There's one band that one of the other moms and I refer to as "the toy soldiers" because that is exactly what their uniforms remind us of. A few years ago we saw a band whose color guard was wearing outfits that looked like lizards or dragons or something. I don't remember what that show theme was but those outfits were freaky.

I hope your home stays dry, too.

This weekend's NASCAR race is at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet. I'm not sure how far that is from you, Marge. But the race started late due to rain. Then about 109 laps in it started raining again so they stopped the race for about 4.5 hours. The track is lighted, and they were able to dry the track, so they started it again about an hour ago.

TIme for me to call it a day. I need to get laundry in for myself (maybe, we'll see if I can scrounge together an outfit for work) and then take some pain meds and head to bed.

Joliet is about 45 minutes south of me.
They filmed Prison Break there (at a closed penitentiary).

Sorry... when you posted that, I was on I-64 heading home from visiting my parents.

Since the boys had a "free" weekend, we went down there yesterday morning and spent the night. DH stayed here because he took a continuing education class yesterday and today.

We went to church with Mom and Dad yesterday evening and on our way out of the house, we noticed a good-sized puddle of water inside the garage. When we got back we investigated it and determined it was from their hot water heater (which is located in the garage). So thanks to a Facetime call with DH, we got the water going to it turned off, and stopped it from leaking more, and turned off the circuit breaker for it. DH went to Mom and Dad's this evening after his class; he'll spend the night there and help Dad buy a new heater and replace the old one. He got there right as the boys and I were leaving.

So that was our exciting weekend.

Marge, I enjoyed all your updates while I was away. It was difficult to respond, didn't even try SCS after once on the iPod; did look on the laptop but was only on a laptop a few times over three and a half weeks. At least in PA I could get my email on my iPod with my sister's wireless. I could check info I had to; mostly what I missed was pictures, so over the past few days, I've been going back and finding all the pics you guys left for me, and going through them, the sturgeon all over Chicago; neat. DH could be doing this same job in Chicago; he had an offer back then but stayed here. I must admit, the winters don't exactly appeal to me. I'm spoiled now!

DH and I went out for Indian food tonight for dinner after he got back. I'm never sure if he'll arrive back here hungry or not so I didn't prepare anything.

But I need to watch the mindless nibbling; I need to track for a week. Strictly WW tracking for a week should get me on track fast, right?

The update before was about Buffalo Mary (job & moving to France). I just heard from French Friend Christiane also. They applied for a visa for her to move to US, but going slow (have to translate French docs like divorce papers, etc.) And Landlord Lover lost his job this summer. And her hours got cut back at the library because they merged with the next little village. So now they are thinking that LL should retire and move to France since he has no job here anyway. (He is an electrician and over 60). Her boys are well and in college. LL visited her in France in August instead of her coming here.

We were hoping you guys would enjoy the photos. The sturgeon were in Sturgeon Bay, WI, not Chicago. Agree about the winters but Jane can tell you, she loved the city. I don't think she expected to love it so much but it really is an awesome city.

Did some Zentangle doodles last night while watching Miss America. Amazing that an Indian won -- she was lovely. Saddened me to see the nasty comments being posted about "Miss Americas should be blond and blue eyed" under the Yahoo article.

Sigh. Anyway at least 2 of the doodles were good enough to use on cards, 1 is going to the trash bin, and 1 I'm not sure.

Oh yes, of course! And yes, Chicago looks awesome. When DH had that job offer (when he took his current one instead), I was all for getting further east and said, "They have lots of sports and good food!" But the winter kind of did it for him. lol

And I'd already heard about Miss Kansas and her tattoos! Yeah for diversity.

But it does make you wonder, if there's a Miss Black America, is there still? If there is, do we need a diverse Miss A and then one for each ethnicity?

Arlington sister's DH would be willing to help with landscaping type stuff or anything that involves woodworking. They have a story about how he tried to change their kitchen faucet once and my sister had to finish the job. Sisturd's DH - well, about the only DIY he does is mowing the yard and changing the door and drawer pulls on the kitchen cabinets.

eta: Of course, if my dad were 20 years younger, he would have replaced the water heater himself.

Oh PH, yes we are seeing the changes now, with DH's shoulder problems, and DS not close by(lol), we now have to pay people to do things DH used to accomplish without paying anyone!

But it did always surprise me when some friends would say they were waiting on an electrician - to do something my DH did routinely. Some people just aren't handy. My DH is very handy, just not physically capable of as much at the moment.

My dad was handy too, so yeah it's what I'm used to. But I know some guys just aren't.

There's a DH family story about his dad, who also did things himself, he'd go to the library and look things up, how to do something. Until he dropped a disposal unit on his own head. He quit doing most plumbing jobs after that. DH took over some when we were visiting more frequently when we lived in FL.

And we checked out the old Liquor Cabinet. There were floaters in some opened bottles, bleah, but I also noted that the names of what was there were good ones. The adults enjoyed a drink when friends visited. But it was so old. But Stoli, Glennfiddich, (sp) and Beefeaters (and I don't do gin), etc. All good stuff. Tons of teeny glasses on a shelf. DH just wants that cabinet kept for sure, because his dad had it made. It's a nice piece of work.

At Mom & Dad's over the weekend we were talking some about how time is coming up on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Isabel.

Mom and Dad were still in "the old house" (where I grew up) then. DH and I and the boys were down there afterwards helping clean up the fallen trees from the yard. Well, the boys were still pretty small, 7 and 4, so they just helped pick up sticks and smaller stuff and kept Mom company inside the house. I don't think Arlington sister and her husband were there; their area had been hit pretty hard, too. But sisturd and her DH and my niece were there helping, too.

Dad had a flatbed wagon hitched up to one of his tractors so we were loading that with all the tree limbs and such. When the wagon got pretty well loaded, BIL offered to drive it down to where Dad wanted it all dumped.

Dad looked at BIL and very firmly said, "NO. Patricia will drive it."

So I drove the tractor. I don't remember how the wagon got unloaded, but I remember driving the tractor and having my niece ride on there with me.

Dad said later, "I don't trust him driving my tractor." LOL

Okay somebody behind us now owns a set of drums. I'm going to go with the twin boys right behind us who are probably 10-12 now?

I think there is/are younger sibling(s) too. High fence between houses and only way to get to them is a long walk around a very oddly shaped block.

So one of the other product managers I work with is loosely related to the new Miss America, it turns out.

She is the daughter of his sister's husband (BIL) uncle.

He did not know she was in the pageant even, but got a text last night telling him to turn on the TV

So the Nats MLB game Monday was postponed. They were supposed to play the Braves.

We're playing a double header Tuesday.

It was really sweet of him to drive down and take care of it. And a good thing you caught it when you did.

Zentangles!!! FTW!!!

I'll definitely be Zentangling some this week. I'm going to show the technique when I teach my class in 2 weeks and might ask them to bring a zentangle or two to the class after that.

You GO girl!

That's so cool!

Some of the reactions made me really sad. No racism in America? Uh... not yet.

ZZzzzz.

Definitely up past my bedtime. On the phone much of the evening with several college friends--one of our friends is a civilian engineer for the Navy. He doesn't work in the Navy yard but several of us had a round robin going making sure he was ok and someone had heard from him. He called a couple of us back. It was great to catch up. Very tragic circumstances very much make you realize how much time has passed, and how time doesn't stop you from caring about people who matter so much to you. So for all the sadness, it meant a lot to catch up.

Then walked doggles. Now off to bed. I think my head is already asleep and just waiting for the rest of me to catch up with it and start snoring.

Oh no! There's no racism here! We have a black-American President and an Indian American Miss America, we're diverse, there's your proof!

I do wish it were that easy.
